Chapter 58

Meloshy glanced at the home where she had lived for two years and bid it a final farewell. Loving Christopher was the biggest regret and deepest mistake of her life. Looking up at the sky, the sun broke through the clouds, signaling a new life awaited her.

That evening, Christopher accompanied Cynthia after work, as usual, then returned home, missing Melody again. He had a social event that night and had drunk a bit. Feeling queasy, he sat at the dining table, his mind wandering back to a time she had brought him a hangover remedy. She had always been considerate, quietly waiting by his side after he scolded her. But now, snapping back to reality, the vast house felt empty.

He furrowed his brow, realizing he had been thinking about her more than usual these past few days, and he felt displeased with himself. He got up to take his medicine and pour some water, but then he noticed something missing. After a moment, he remembered that Melody’s water cup was gone. He didn’t think much of it; it was just a cup. However, when he went to the balcony to collect clothes, he realized Melody’s bath towel and hand towel were also missing.

“Did she come back?” Christopher muttered to himself, then immediately scowled. “She can come back to take her things; she seems to be completely fine. Yet, she doesn’t even come to apologize. What? Is she expecting me to look for her? How ridiculous.” With a cold snort, he went to the master bedroom to wash up and then went to bed.

Meanwhile, in another neighborhood, Melody lay on her bed, using her new phone to log into her social media account to reply to messages from Anthony and her friend. She had returned to the country that day and refused Anthony’s offer to pick her up and arrange accommodation. The equity dividends she had earned over the past two years were enough to buy the small apartment she was now living in, providing a comfortable space for her to live alone.

On the other side of the phone, Heidi scolded her for being “heartless” and disappearing for two years after going abroad. Melody had to put a lot of effort into calming Heidi down. Anthony wrote, “You should adjust to the time difference first. You don’t have to rush to start the job. I’ve already made arrangements.” Melody agreed and planned to start work in three days. After all, she still needed to buy clothes since she was about to enter the workforce.

This was her first night of freedom. She took a deep breath and slept soundly.

At the same time, Christopher had just returned home with Cynthia. She had planned to stay in the hospital for a couple more days to recuperate. But when she went to find Melody at noon, hoping to tell her that the three-day deadline had passed, she was told that Melody had already been discharged early that morning.

After returning home, Cynthia opened the door to the small guest room and saw that Melody’s things were gone, leaving only a divorce agreement and an unopened phone. She smiled in satisfaction. Of course, the most important thing was the ten-million-dollar necklace Christopher had bought for Melody, which was still on the living room table. She glanced at it, relieved it hadn’t been swapped out.

“Christopher, thank you for picking me up after work. I could have gotten home on my own,” Cynthia said, looking at him in the living room.

“Picking you up is the least I could do. After all, you were hospitalized because of Melody,” Christopher replied.

“It’s nothing. I understand how women can get jealous. I envy Melody for marrying you,” she hinted with a wink.

He pressed her hand together without responding and placed her things in her room. When he came out, he saw Cynthia holding a brocade box and said, “This is the gift you bought for Melody. It’s so valuable. She can’t just throw it away, no matter how angry she is. I’ll put it in her room.”

Looking at the box, he was reminded of Melody’s cold face and her admirers. There was also that man he hadn’t identified yet, and the fact that she still hadn’t apologized left him seething. “Why should I show her any respect?” Christopher asked coldly. “You can have it as compensation for the gas leak. You’ve suffered these past few days.”
