Chapter 57

Even if Melody had done it, Christopher would still defend Cynthia. After all, in a lover's eyes, even the most flawed person seems perfect. He considered everything Cynthia did right, while despising Melody intensely. In fact, he probably wished her dead.

Melody curled her lips into a bitter smile. After two years, all she received in return was his desire for her demise. Meanwhile, Cynthia had already gone home and contacted a technician. Finding Christopher's computer password-protected, she tried her birthday, and it powered on instantly. With a smug grin, she thought, "Both the computer and phone passwords are related to me. If that's not love, what is?"

Cynthia had the technician erase the surveillance footage. Afterward, she asked, "Are you sure everything's been deleted?" "Don't worry. It's all gone, even from the cloud," the technician reassured her. She smiled contentedly. The weight lifted from her shoulders, and she thought, "Melody, you really are that stupid. You gave away the facts about the cameras. Otherwise, I wouldn't have even noticed. You only dared mention it because you thought I didn't know Christopher's computer password, but unfortunately, all his passwords are my birthday."

When work ended, it was past 9:00 pm. As usual, Christopher went to the hospital to visit Cynthia, bringing her favorite supper. "Christopher, you should bring some up to Mel. She woke up today," Cynthia suggested.

"You went to see her?" he asked, frowning.

"I went, but she didn't want to see me," Cynthia said submissively.

"She was too embarrassed to see you, considering she put you in this situation, and now you're suffering from dizziness as a side effect," Christopher replied, his anger rising.

"But she's also pitiful. You should go see her; she must really want to see you," she said sweetly.

"No," he replied sharply. "I've already been more than generous by not suing her. If she had any conscience, she should be kneeling before you, begging for your forgiveness."

Seeing his anger, Cynthia continued to plead, further irritating him. Finally, she changed the subject.

Christopher stayed at the hospital until 11:00 pm before leaving. In the elevator, staring at the floor numbers, he paused at Melody's floor for a few seconds before pressing the button for the first floor. Why would he visit that venomous woman? He hadn't even held her accountable or scolded her. She should be grateful to him and beg him not to throw her out of the house. He sneered inwardly, imagining Melody crying and pleading with him.

The following day, at 8:00 am, Melody quietly completed her discharge procedures and returned home. She packed her bedding, water bottle, toiletries, and towels, tossing them into the downstairs trash can, erasing all traces of her presence. There were two copies of the divorce agreement—a photocopy for Christopher and the original mailed to the Fuller family, addressed to Daniel. Since the contract had ended, she was free.

Standing at the neighborhood entrance, waiting for a taxi, she had only a small suitcase and a bag. Even the security guard asked if she was going on a trip, unaware that this was all her belongings. She looked pitiful, as if she had only stayed there temporarily for the past two years. When the car arrived, she left.
