Chapter 56
“Has Melodie woken up?” Christopher asked immediately.
“She has,” Sheldon replied. “I also asked the doctor about her condition. She’s recovering well and doesn’t need oxygen, though she’s still prone to drowsiness.”
Christopher remained expressionless, showing no sign of relief at her awakening. Sheldon could see no trace of joy on his face. After standing there for a few seconds, as Sheldon was about to leave, Christopher stopped him and instructed him to find a new accommodation.
“It must have a good environment, a safe neighborhood, high privacy, and be fully furnished,” Christopher stated.
Sheldon wondered, “Is Mr. Fuller planning to move out? Is he going to live with that woman?”
“I understand. I’ll go look for a place now.” He nodded.
Just as he reached the door, he heard Christopher speak again. “Did she… say anything else?”
Sheldon hesitated momentarily, then turned and answered, “No, Mrs. Fuller is still quite weak.”
He had been wrestling with his thoughts. He intended to gauge Christopher’s mood, but given Christopher’s obvious anger, it seemed clear that he wasn’t ready to hear anything else. Melody and Christopher were a family; surely they would discuss things openly eventually.
Christopher snapped in anger as he sat at his desk, “Weak? Hmph! She’s pretending again. I think she’s just too guilty to speak. Otherwise, who wouldn’t explain themselves immediately?”
Sheldon stayed silent. He couldn’t help but sigh internally, thinking that Melody truly understood Christopher’s temper.
That afternoon, Cynthia visited Melody’s ward. Looking at Melody lying on the bed, she mocked, “How pitiful. Has Christopher come to visit you? He told me he came to the hospital every night to stay with me and even bought me flowers and gifts. Our wards are only three stories apart. It wouldn’t be hard for him to come up.”
Melody listened to her boasting, then slowly turned her head and asked flatly, “Did you turn on the gas, or was it Christopher?”
“Wasn’t it you? We went out for dinner last night,” Cynthia said, crossing her arms with a smug smile.
Seeing her so self-righteously, Melody gritted her teeth and responded, “I clearly closed the kitchen door last night, but it was open this morning. Besides, I’ve been cooking for two years and wouldn’t make such a basic mistake.”
“I don’t care if it was you or Christopher, but to you two, is life just a joke? How does it feel? I didn’t die, so I guess you’re disappointed.”
“What are you talking about, Mel? I don’t understand a word,” Cynthia said innocently, blinking her eyes.
As long as she denied it, who would know what happened the night before?
Seeing her still pretending, Melody sneered. “Oh, by the way, I forgot to tell you. There are surveillance cameras at home.”
Suddenly, Cynthia’s body stiffened, and her facial expression changed drastically. Surveillance cameras…
Christopher had surveillance cameras in his home. That meant everything she had done was on tape. She was flustered, and she clenched her fists. On the hospital bed, Melody looked at her expression and realized that it was Cynthia’s fault. But Christopher wasn’t innocent either. He had left her behind and only taken Cynthia with him. He was an accomplice.
“Mel, I just remembered I have something to do, so I’ll be leaving now. You should rest well,” Cynthia said, smiling after her panic.
Melody watched her leave, knowing she would likely return to deal with the footage. Why had she told Cynthia about the evidence? Why didn’t she just show the recording to Christopher and clear her name?
