Chapter 272: The Knife and the Calm

When Jonathan got home, Sierra wasn't there. He was about to call her when the door opened.

โ€œWhat do you want for dinner?โ€

She said it like nothing had happened, walking in and heading to her room to change. Johnathan didn't ask where she'd been. He just rolled up his sleeves and went straight into the kitchen. Sierra followed to help, moving quietly beside him.

It didnโ€™t take him long to notice something was off.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Sierra hesitated for half a second. Then said plainly, โ€œJose came to see me today.โ€

The moment the words left her mouth, Jonathanโ€™s whole face darkened.

โ€œWhat did he say to you?โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t sugarcoat it. She gave him the basicsโ€”what Jose had said, how he offered to leave if Jonathan returned to the family.

Jonathan let out a short, cold laugh. โ€œHe said heโ€™d leave?โ€

He sneered. โ€œDid he say anything about Susie?โ€ He always found it funny how they were willing to be noble only when it suited them. If Jose really wanted to avoid conflict, why show up in the first place?

โ€œHe said he couldnโ€™t speak for his mother. Just thatโ€ฆ she loves your father very much.โ€

The knife in Jonathanโ€™s hand paused mid-chop. Sierra reached over quickly, placing a hand on his arm. โ€œEasy. Youโ€™ll crack the cutting board.โ€

She had a way of grounding him, always did. He looked over at her. โ€œDo you believe him?โ€

โ€œI believe you.โ€ Her voice was calm, steady. โ€œHeโ€™s a stranger to me. Youโ€™re not.โ€

Even if Jose really did admire Jonathan, Sierra wasnโ€™t going to tell Jonathan to accept him. Maybe Jose was innocent. But Jonathan had lost so much more.

Sierra took the knife from his hand and kept cutting, her voice still soft. โ€œJust do what feels right to you. He came to me to say his piece. Thatโ€™s all. Whatever you want to doโ€”Iโ€™m behind you.โ€

The tension in Jonathanโ€™s shoulders eased. โ€œTheyโ€™re not as innocent as they act,โ€ he muttered. Susie and his mother were supposed to be best friends. No one who actually cared about her couldโ€™ve done what Susie did.

After that, they didnโ€™t bring up the Wynn family again. Sierra shifted the conversation to school, and to Dickson.

โ€œI spoke with his teacher a few days ago. Heโ€™s doing great. Got a few new friends, grades are on track.โ€

โ€œThen when he comes back this weekend, weโ€™ll make something good for him.โ€

Sierra smiled. She didnโ€™t bring up Shaneโ€™s phone call. Johnathan already had enough on his plateโ€”she didnโ€™t want to add to it. But Shane clearly wasnโ€™t done.

A few days later, Sierra saw him on campusโ€”standing with school leadership, apparently visiting the research building. He looked right at her.

โ€œWow,โ€ Autumn whispered beside her. โ€œThatโ€™s the guy the school was talking about? Didnโ€™t expect him to be that young or that hot.โ€

Sierra followed her gazeโ€”and froze. Shane. Her face turned cold.

โ€œSome people look human, but theyโ€™re worse than animals.โ€ Shane and Kason, people like them never cared about others; they just sought thrills. The sharpness in her voice made everyone around her look up in surprise. This wasnโ€™t the calm, polite Sierra they were used to.

Autumn blinked. โ€œWaitโ€ฆ you know him?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Sierra turned back to her work, tone clipped. โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€

Outside, Shane was still watching her. One of the faculty members noticed.

โ€œThatโ€™s the student we brought in on a special track,โ€ they explained. โ€œSheโ€™s quite brilliant.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ Shane smiled. โ€œSheโ€™s very impressive.โ€

The implication behind his words was clear. And so, when the school invited Sierra to a lunch meeting with the visiting official, they didnโ€™t mention who would be there. When she stepped in and saw Shane, she turned right around to leave.

The administrator looked genuinely confused. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? You two arenโ€™t friends?โ€

Shane had just told him they were. That was the whole reason she was invited in the first place. Their school didnโ€™t do favors for powerful people lightly, even if Shane had strong connections. Besidesโ€”Sierra was dating Jonathan. That counted for something.

Before she could say anything, Shane stood up. โ€œWe are friends,โ€ he said smoothly. โ€œJust had a little misunderstanding. Sierra. Long time no see.โ€

It really had been a while. This was their first face-to-face since coming to Capital City. All eyes turned to her, curious. Not wanting to make a scene, Sierra picked the farthest seat from him and sat down.

She barely said a word throughout lunch, but she learned plenty. Shane now worked in the medical systemโ€”and he wasnโ€™t just some entry-level employee. He had power.
