Chapter 273: That Kind of Welcome?

Sierra hid the sarcasm in her eyes. Halfway through lunch, she went to the restroom. When she stepped out and saw Shane waiting, she wasnโ€™t surprised in the least. If he hadnโ€™t shown up, that would have been weird.

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ she asked, cutting straight to the point. โ€œCome to avenge Kason?โ€

โ€œHah,โ€ Shane let out a low laugh, as if sheโ€™d just told a joke. โ€œKason? That idiot got what he deserved. Heโ€™s got nothing to do with me. We go way back, you and Iโ€”this is the kind of welcome I get?โ€

His eyes locked on hers, searching for something. But there was no fear in her face. No hesitation. Nothing to feed on. His smile faded.

โ€œYou forgot me already? It hasnโ€™t been that long. Iโ€™m actually kinda hurt,โ€ he said.

To an outsider, it might have sounded like they were exes catching up. But Sierra knew better. She knew what he was fishing for.

โ€œThat part of my life is over,โ€ she said coolly. โ€œSo are the people in it.โ€

She knew what he wantedโ€”panic, dread, humiliation. That used to be her every time she saw him. But she wasnโ€™t that girl anymore. All she wanted now was for Shane to join Kason in the ground. That was it.

Shane studied her for a moment longer. When he didnโ€™t find what he wanted, his expression cooled even more. Then, to her surprise, he smiled.

โ€œYou know what? This version of youโ€™s not bad. See you around.โ€

He waved like they were old friends, then turned and walked off. Sierra watched him go, frowning. She had no clue what his next move would beโ€”but he definitely wasnโ€™t done.

The next morning, she found out exactly what he was planning. She barely made it into the lab building before security stopped her.

โ€œHey! These flowers are for you.โ€

โ€œFor me?โ€ she asked, confused.

A giant bouquet of roses waited at the front desk. Autumn came walking up and gasped. โ€œDamn, Mr. Yaeger really went all out. These are gorgeous!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know anything about this,โ€ Sierra said with a strained smile. She picked up the bouquet and glanced at the card. Her face turned to stone. Without a word, she walked over and dropped the whole thing straight in the trash.

โ€œHey, what the hell? Why would youโ€”โ€ Autumn stopped when she saw Sierraโ€™s eyes. Icy. Unmoving. She kept quiet after that.

Later, when Sierraโ€™s expression softened a little, Autumn asked, โ€œThat wasnโ€™t from Mr. Yaeger?โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ Sierra said. She didnโ€™t explain further, and Autumn didnโ€™t push. Sierra thought that would be the end of it. It wasnโ€™t.

Day after day, the roses kept coming. Bigger. More extravagant. Imported. On day seven, the bouquet had 999 stems. Every single one ended up in the trash.

Of course, it didnโ€™t take long for the whole school to start talking. โ€œWhoโ€™s trying to chase Sierra? Donโ€™t they know who sheโ€™s dating?โ€ โ€œDoes Johnathan even know about this?โ€ โ€œI mean, Sierraโ€™s amazing. Itโ€™s not that weird. Sheโ€™s not marriedโ€”people are allowed to shoot their shot.โ€

Apparently encouraged by the mystery sender, more gifts started piling up. Flowers. Chocolates. Letters. Autumn was gushing. โ€œYouโ€™re like a magnet. Honestly, Iโ€™m kinda worried for Johnathan.โ€

Sierra smiled tightly. She knew exactly what Shane was doing. He wasnโ€™t chasing her. He was provoking Johnathan. This wasnโ€™t about love; it was about control.

Shane was a lunatic. Heโ€™d made it clear that Johnathan was his next target. And now that he knew who Johnathan was, he wouldnโ€™t back off. Heโ€™d only get more obsessed.

Sierra exhaled slowly. Then she pulled up the blocked number and hit redial. It only rang twice.

โ€œSierra,โ€ Shane said smoothly. โ€œFinally. Took you long enough. Did you like the flowers?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you touch Johnathan.โ€ She didnโ€™t yell. She didnโ€™t shake. Her voice was flat and hard.

Shane laughed. โ€œWhat, now that Grandmaโ€™s gone, heโ€™s your new savior?โ€

โ€œShane,โ€ her voice dropped like ice. โ€œWhatever youโ€™re planning, bring it to me. Leave him out of it.โ€
