Chapter 615 A Dangerous Web

When Wyatt stepped out of the bathroom, the lights in the room were off. Only the faint glow of the bedside lamp lit the space, just enough to see Yunice lying under the covers. The bare skin of her shoulder and neck peeked out from beneath the quiltโ€”she wasnโ€™t wearing anything.

Wyatt sat down.

Yunice had just opened her mouth to speak when Wyatt kissed her, swallowing her words.

He already knew what she wanted; this kind of thing didnโ€™t need a girl to ask for it.

The quilt slipped down from the bedโ€ฆ

Yunice wanted it a little rough, and Wyatt followed her lead.

But she didnโ€™t have the endurance for it. She was the one whoโ€™d urged him on, but once he gave her what she asked for, she started crying. Her tears made it impossible for Wyatt to tell whether she wanted him to go harder or softer, deeper or gentler.

By the end, Yunice was clinging to him tightly, crying as she wrapped her arms around his neck, as if trying to convey something through the sheer force of her embrace.

โ€œWyatt, Iโ€™m using you.โ€ Yunice rested her chin on Wyattโ€™s shoulder. She held him so tightly he couldnโ€™t see her face.

But he could hear the catch in her voice.

Wyatt paused, then said, โ€œI know. Iโ€™ve known from the start. I chose this.โ€

Yunice wanted to say more, but Wyatt didnโ€™t give her the chance. He poured all of himself into her instead.

Her mind was overloadedโ€”her body needed the rest.

In the end, with Wyatt holding her waist and Yunice clinging to him, even tighter than usual, she finally relaxed.

He gently lowered her back onto the pillow, brushing a tear from the corner of her eye with his fingertip. โ€œAll the bad thingsโ€”I did them. None of it has anything to do with you.โ€

Yunice closed her eyes, the corners still damp, and drifted off.

Wyatt watched her for a while, half amused and half exasperated.

In nearly thirty years of living, this was the first time heโ€™d realized he actually had a talent for putting people to sleep.

He reached for the pack of cigarettes on the nightstand, but when he pulled it out and remembered Yunice was still lying there, he headed out to the balcony.

In the cold night breeze, his short hair stirred against his forehead. He stared in the direction of Medical University, eyes dark with thought.

Once Yunice reeled in the net sheโ€™d cast over the Saunders and Powell families, would she be leaving?

Smoke drifted in the wind. Wyatt thought, She probably wonโ€™t leave just yet. She still wants to finish her college degree, doesnโ€™t she?

The next morning, when Yunice woke up, Wyatt was cooking.

She had no idea where heโ€™d gotten a pot from, but he was using it to simmer soup. It had clearly been stewing for hours; it was almost ready by the time she got up.

Yunice hesitated, then asked, โ€œDid you sleep at all last night?โ€

To cook soup to this point, it wouldโ€™ve needed at least three hours on low heat. But they hadnโ€™t gone to bed until nearly two.

Wyatt said, โ€œI can sleep in the car. Youโ€™ve got class laterโ€”you need your energy.โ€

Yunice couldnโ€™t help asking, โ€œYouโ€™re heading back today?โ€

Wyatt caught the trace of disappointment in her voice. His hand paused mid-motion as he ladled the soup, and he glanced at her with a hint of guilt. โ€œThe company needs me. And we still havenโ€™t gotten anything out of that guy from last night.โ€

Yunice covered quickly, โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it like that.โ€

She had school; sheโ€™d be on campus all day. It wasnโ€™t like Wyatt could just sit around waiting. Of course, he had to go back.

After breakfast, Wyatt insisted on driving her to school. Smartly, heโ€™d swapped carsโ€”he knew Yunice would want to keep a low profile, so heโ€™d come in a low-key BYD Qin.

Yunice said nothing about the night at the hotel.

But she hadnโ€™t forgotten about the man who was spying on her in the herb plot. She made Wyatt promise that if he found out who sent him, he had to tell herโ€”no keeping it from her.

Wyatt had just agreed when Yuniceโ€™s phone rang.

Someone was calling her.

Noticing her hesitation to answer, Wyatt glanced sideways.

Victor?

When Wyatt turned his eyes back to the road, Yunice finally picked up.

โ€œYunny, how are you settling in at school?โ€ Victor asked.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ Yunice replied.

She waited; if he was calling this early, it had to be for a reason.

Sure enough, after a short pause, Victor brought it up awkwardly. โ€œDid youโ€ฆ catch someone last night?โ€

Yunice was stunned.

Victor sounded sheepish. โ€œCould you let him go? He was one of mine.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Yuniceโ€™s eyes widened. That was unexpected.

โ€œI was worried someone might try to hurt you,โ€ Victor said. โ€œYouโ€™re at Medical University now, out of our usual protection range. I just wanted someone to keep an eye on you, just in case. Sorry I didnโ€™t tell you ahead of timeโ€”I didnโ€™t want to make you feel uncomfortable.โ€

Yuniceโ€™s brows knitted. โ€œGot it.โ€

After she hung up, she turned to Wyatt, a little awkward. โ€œThe guy from last nightโ€ฆ Victor sent him.โ€

Wyatt immediately let out a cold laugh. He knew Victor had ulterior motives.

โ€œHe thinks my people arenโ€™t enough? What a meddling pain in the ass.โ€

Yunice tested gently, โ€œYou didnโ€™tโ€ฆ do anything to him, did you?โ€
