Chapter 616 Waiting Under the Tree
Yunice knew that if they wanted to get this kind of man to talk, theyโd have to rough him up a bit. But the guy turned out to be one of their own. If he got hurt, it would be hard to explain things to Victor.
Then she heard Wyatt say irritably, โAlready chopped him up.โ
Yunice immediately went silent.
Wyatt didnโt hear a peep from her for a long moment. He turned his head to look and saw her staring down, fingers nervously twisting in her lap, lips nearly chewed raw.
Wyatt quickly corrected himself. โI was kidding. I didnโt touch him.โ
Only then did her expression ease a little.
When they got to the school gate, Yunice unfastened her seatbelt and got out of the car, not letting Wyatt walk her in.
As she approached the gate, she turned back and waved at Wyatt, then jogged onto campus.
Wyatt smiled as he watched her disappear into the crowd. Just then, he got a call from Jordan.
โWyatt, what time are you getting to the office? There are still two project contracts that need your signoffโฆโ
Wyatt replied, โNot coming.โ
It was so brief Jordan almost didnโt register it. His voice shot up. โNot coming?โ
People around him glanced over, and he quickly lowered his voice. โWyatt, come on. The companyโs swamped. Iโve been covering for you and Mrs. Cooper this whole time. You know how hard this is?โ
Wyatt sounded completely unconcerned. โItโs nothing you canโt handle, Mr. Jordan.โ
Jordan felt the weight of the world. โWyatt, seriously. Mrs. Cooper has school during the day and needs to rest at night. Youโll only see her for three or four hours after class. Is it really worth camping out over there?โ
Wyatt said, โMy wifeโs in a bad mood. She needs me.โ
Jordan groaned. โThe company needs you. I need you!โ
Wyatt raised a brow. โCan the company hold me while I sleep? Can you hold me while I sleep?โ
Jordan was speechless.
He slammed the phone down.
Life was too hard. Jordan sighed. โHow long do I have to keep covering for himโฆโ
Then he felt someone behind him. Turning around, he saw Nora smiling faintly a short distance away.
Jordanโs gaze sharpened. He kept his tone smooth. โMs. Nora. What brings you here?โ
Nora leaned on her cane. โJordan, can I see Wyatt? I promise Yunice wonโt know.โ
She hesitated a beat, then added, โItโs about my brotherโฆโ
Her fingers picked at the edge of her cane, chipping away at the painted surface.
Jordan didnโt say a word more than he had to. โMs. Nora, donโt worry. Once Wyatt has time, Iโll let him know you stopped by.โ
Nora blinked. โWyattโs at the office?โ
Jordan paused, then turned back coolly. โOf course he is. Who told you otherwise?โ
Nora said, โBut Yunice told me she was at school. Didnโt Wyatt go with her?โ
Jordan snorted like it was a joke. โWhereโd you hear that nonsense? Even if Mrs. Cooper were overseas, Wyatt wouldnโt leave her side if he could help it. But heโs got things to do here.โ
Then his tone cooled. โAnd Ms. Nora, you used to work with Wyatt. You know he hates people digging into his personal life.โ
โThe last time you went snooping around Pavilion Hall, Wyatt let it slide. But if you pull something like that again, it wonโt go so easy for you.โ
As Jordan walked off, Nora gripped her cane tighter. He really did act just like Wyatt, not even pretending to be polite anymore.
But it didnโt matter. She knew Yunice was at school. That was enough.
โMr. Jordan,โ Nora suddenly called after him, smiling. โYunice was the one who told me. If you donโt believe me, you can ask Wyatt yourself.โ
Jordan frowned and said nothing.
Nora had been Wyattโs secretary once. She still knew how to worm her way in.
Back at the office, making sure he hadnโt been followed, Jordan called Wyatt again and relayed everything Nora had just said.
โWyatt, why would Mrs. Cooper be in contact with Nora? Why would she tell her sheโs at school?โ
Wyatt was silent.
โIs she hinting that sheโs not home? Trying to give Nora an opening? Wyatt, what if Mrs. Cooperโs also laying a trap for you while sheโs finishing her revenge plans?โ
โIf you stray, itโll be that much easier for her to leave you.โ
Standing under a tree on campus, Wyatt watched the walkway ahead. He answered quietly, โNoraโs full of tricks. Who knows if sheโs telling the truth?โ
โThen what should we do?โ
โIgnore her.โ
Wyatt ended the call and crossed his arms, leaning against the tree as he kept his eyes on the two figures up ahead.
