Chapter 573 Acknowledgments
โCome on,โ Wyatt said. โWeโre adults. Who doesnโt have a couple of past relationships? You were engaged to Paul for ten yearsโI never held that against you. So why canโt you let go of mine? Is that fair?โ
Yunice replied, โBut Nora was willing to die for you.โ
And she had actually done it.
Wyatt answered, โI owe her. I can repay that debt. But just because she saved me doesnโt mean I have to repay her with love.โ
โShe and I broke up before her accident. I feel responsible for herโbut I donโt love her.โ
Yunice blinked, stunned. Wyatt rarely spoke so directly about his relationship with Nora.
If they had already broken up before Noraโs accident, then Yunice wasnโt a homewrecker after all.
That lifted a weight from her chestโbut she still didnโt completely trust his words.
After all, men lie.
The next day, Wyatt asked Yunice to come to the office with him.
โIโm not going,โ Yunice said. โI need to study. Finals are coming up. If I donโt pass, I wonโt get credit, and itโll affect my graduation.โ
Wyatt closed her book. โThereโs room for you at my desk.โ
Yunice frowned and stared him down.
Wyatt didnโt flinch. He looked right back at her.
She sighed. โWhat are you even trying to do now?โ
โBuild our relationship,โ he replied. โLook, Iโm busy with work and social events all day. Youโre always studying at home. We barely spend time together, and when we do, weโre always fighting. And you never text me during the day.โ
โI want a real relationship with you, not some act. Come to work with me.โ
He pulled her to her feet, insistent.
From the second-floor railing, Elianna rested her chin in her hands, watching them leave. โSo boringโฆ Maybe I should find a man too?โ
In the car, Wyatt strapped Yunice into the passenger seat and started the engine. โFrom now on, Iโll take you everywhere. Watch closely and see if I ever go to meet Nora.โ
โIโฆโ Yunice was at a loss.
Sometimes Wyatt was completely unpredictableโhard to read. Other times, he hit you head-on with such direct honesty, you didnโt know how to respond.
Yunice usually took the VIP elevator straight to Wyattโs office. But today, he insisted on holding her hand and parading her through the main office, right in front of the secretarial team.
To everyone who looked their way, he introduced her plainly. โThis is my wife.โ
Yunice quickly texted Laurie for help.
Within minutes, Laurie showed up with her white coat draped over her shoulders like a cape, walking with wide strides like a boss.
โHey, Mr. Wyatt,โ Laurie said, tapping his shoulder with the folder under her arm to get his attention. โMind lending her to me for a bit? Jackyโs out today. Iโm swamped.โ
She was talking about Yunice, obviously.
Yunice gave Wyatt a hopeful look. Please let me go. Please donโt make me endure all this staring.
Wyatt glanced at Laurie. โNo.โ
Laurie pressed on, โHer internship paperwork still needs my signature. Sheโs got one last practical to finish. You want her to fail and delay graduation?โ
At the words โyour wife,โ Wyattโs eyebrows lifted slightly.
Seizing the chance, Laurie grabbed Yunice by the wrist. โIโm taking her. If you want her back, come pick her up at the lab.โ
She turned decisively.
Yunice shot Wyatt one last look. He didnโt stop them.
Delighted, she quickly followed Laurie.
But just then, Laurie came to an abrupt halt.
Yunice followed her gazeโand froze in place, as if struck by lightning.
Down the hallway, Maine was pushing a wheelchair.
In it sat Nora.
A thin blanket was draped over her legs. She wore a white shirt dress. Her long black hair hung neatly around her pale, delicate face.
From a distance, she looked eerily similar to Yuniceโmaybe 70% alike.
Laurie stared for a moment. When she realized who it wasโher former colleague whoโd been gone for three yearsโher expression flickered, then quickly returned to normal. She tugged Yunice.
โCome on.โ
But Yunice didnโt budge. She was rooted in place, eyes locked on Nora.
Laurie glanced at Wyatt, trying to read the situation.
Wyatt hadnโt been paying attentionโuntil he noticed Yunice wasnโt moving. Then he turned, smiling at first.
But the moment he saw Nora getting closer, his smile faded. His face darkened, unreadable.
Nora stopped in front of them.
The wheelchair halted. Maine gave Yunice a disdainful glare.
Nora offered a soft, gentle smile. โHello, Mrs. Cooper.โ
Was she letting go?
Yunice responded, โHello.โ
Nora continued, โPlease donโt misunderstand. Iโm only here to gather some personal things I left behind three years ago.โ
Maine scoffed. โNora used to work at Wellinges Pharma. She didnโt get a chance to clean out her stuff before the accident. Her department may be gone now, but her things should still be around.โ
