Chapter 572 No Peace Tonight
Watching the light fade from Noraโs eyes, Amyra finally whispered, โNoraโฆ Wyatt got married a year ago.โ
Bale frowned and glanced at Amyra, but ultimately stayed silent.
No one else spoke up either.
That was the reality. Theyโd done what they could to helpโto push Wyatt for an answer. And Wyatt had made it clear, he was leaving the past behind.
Truth be told, none of them really cared who Wyatt ended up marrying. His choice was their stance, too. The only reason they even showed up today was to ease their own conscience.
Before long, someone changed the subject and tried to lift the mood. โNora, what did the doctor say? How long until youโre fully recovered?โ
โYeah, get better soon. Youโve got a second chance now. Maybe youโll even go back to workโฆโ
But they stopped mid-sentence, faces stiffening. Nora used to work at Huaxin. After her accident, the department had been dissolved.
The more they talked, the more awkward things became. The atmosphere turned so uncomfortable that each of them began making excuses to leave, mumbling about letting her rest as they quietly filed out.
In the end, only Maine remained.
Her eyes were red and swollen like walnuts. โThey never meant to help you! What kind of friends are those?!โ
Nora lay motionless in bed, her pale face so eerily similar to Yuniceโs, dim and expressionless. โDonโt blame them. They canโt change how Wyatt feels. After three years, they still came to see meโthatโs already more than I could ask for.โ
But Maine wasnโt angry about that. Her voice cracked with helpless fury. โYouโre really okay with letting Yunice steal Wyatt from you?โ
Nora spoke quietly. โEven if Iโm not okay with itโฆ what can I do? Beg Wyatt to look at me again?โ
Maine looked down at the group chat, eyes burning. Yuniceโs name in that list was a stab to the heart. โWho does she think she is?โ
Then, more bitterly, she muttered, โI donโt even think itโs Wyatt who wants to keep his distance. I bet itโs Yunice clinging to him, making him do it!โ
โTheyโve been married a year. Why didnโt she show up in the group before? Why now, right when you wake up, just to rub it in your face?โ
โMaine, sheโs Wyattโs wife. Sheโs done nothing wrong. Donโt speak about her like that,โ Nora said firmly.
โYouโฆโ Maine collapsed into a chair. โEveryone else fights tooth and nail, and you just give everything up. Youโre too damn kind. Thatโs why you lost Wyatt in the first place!โ
Seeing Nora still so passive, Maine couldnโt take it anymore. โDo you even know? To please Yunice, Wyatt threw Morgan in jail to take the fall for her brother!โ
Noraโs brow furrowed, shocked. โWhat are you talking about?โ
Maineโs frustration poured out. โYou have no idea how far Wyatt spoils Yunice. Sheโs been milking her resemblance to you, asking him for everything!โ
โHe helped her cheat on her SATs, bribed universities, fabricated awards in her hospital wardโanything to make her look like an accomplished academic, just to scrub off that mental hospital label and make her shine!โ
โBut you, Noraโฆ You spent more than ten years overseas, studying until your family hardly recognized you. Everything you earnedโYunice got in a single year.โ
Noraโs fingers twitched, barely noticeable. She frowned. โMaine, Iโm concerned about Morgan. Please donโt bring up anything unrelated.โ
Maine fell silent, then pulled up an article on her phone. โThis was a week agoโa huge rape and murder case in Beijing. The suspect who got taken away in front of everyone was Yuniceโs biological brother, Oscar.โ
โBut yesterday, Morgan was suddenly found high at a club. While barely coherent, someone led him into confessing that he killed Elsie. Now heโs behind bars. They say heโs facing the death penaltyโฆโ
โMadam Mary and Mr. Morgan were frantic. They went to Pavilion Hall to beg Wyatt for help, but he wasnโt home. And those two elders had to endure Yuniceโs cold faceโMadam Mary almost fainted from the stress.โ
Noraโs eyes turned red, veins pulsing at her temples.
She tried to sit up, tried to get out of bed. But after three years of lying still, even simple movements drained herโthere was no way she could stand.
Maine saw the tears streaming down her cheeks and the veins straining in her neck as she struggled. Heart aching, she rushed to prop her up. โLook at you like this, and Wyatt still doesnโt care! For all we know, those two bastards are cuddling in bed right now!โ
โMaine!โ Nora snapped.
Pavilion Hall.
There was no sleep to be had tonight.
Wyatt reached out to hold Yuniceโs hand as she faced away from him.
Without even turning her head, she jabbed him with her elbow.
He easily caught her arm and pulled her back into his arms. โWhat are you sulking about now?!โ
Yunice didnโt even know what she was mad at. She justโฆ couldnโt bring herself to feel at ease, being protected by Wyatt while Nora was still thereโhovering, wounded, and watching.
