Chapter 572 No Peace Tonight

Watching the light fade from Noraโ€™s eyes, Amyra finally whispered, โ€œNoraโ€ฆ Wyatt got married a year ago.โ€

Bale frowned and glanced at Amyra, but ultimately stayed silent.

No one else spoke up either.

That was the reality. Theyโ€™d done what they could to helpโ€”to push Wyatt for an answer. And Wyatt had made it clear, he was leaving the past behind.

Truth be told, none of them really cared who Wyatt ended up marrying. His choice was their stance, too. The only reason they even showed up today was to ease their own conscience.

Before long, someone changed the subject and tried to lift the mood. โ€œNora, what did the doctor say? How long until youโ€™re fully recovered?โ€

โ€œYeah, get better soon. Youโ€™ve got a second chance now. Maybe youโ€™ll even go back to workโ€ฆโ€

But they stopped mid-sentence, faces stiffening. Nora used to work at Huaxin. After her accident, the department had been dissolved.

The more they talked, the more awkward things became. The atmosphere turned so uncomfortable that each of them began making excuses to leave, mumbling about letting her rest as they quietly filed out.

In the end, only Maine remained.

Her eyes were red and swollen like walnuts. โ€œThey never meant to help you! What kind of friends are those?!โ€

Nora lay motionless in bed, her pale face so eerily similar to Yuniceโ€™s, dim and expressionless. โ€œDonโ€™t blame them. They canโ€™t change how Wyatt feels. After three years, they still came to see meโ€”thatโ€™s already more than I could ask for.โ€

But Maine wasnโ€™t angry about that. Her voice cracked with helpless fury. โ€œYouโ€™re really okay with letting Yunice steal Wyatt from you?โ€

Nora spoke quietly. โ€œEven if Iโ€™m not okay with itโ€ฆ what can I do? Beg Wyatt to look at me again?โ€

Maine looked down at the group chat, eyes burning. Yuniceโ€™s name in that list was a stab to the heart. โ€œWho does she think she is?โ€

Then, more bitterly, she muttered, โ€œI donโ€™t even think itโ€™s Wyatt who wants to keep his distance. I bet itโ€™s Yunice clinging to him, making him do it!โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ve been married a year. Why didnโ€™t she show up in the group before? Why now, right when you wake up, just to rub it in your face?โ€

โ€œMaine, sheโ€™s Wyattโ€™s wife. Sheโ€™s done nothing wrong. Donโ€™t speak about her like that,โ€ Nora said firmly.

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Maine collapsed into a chair. โ€œEveryone else fights tooth and nail, and you just give everything up. Youโ€™re too damn kind. Thatโ€™s why you lost Wyatt in the first place!โ€

Seeing Nora still so passive, Maine couldnโ€™t take it anymore. โ€œDo you even know? To please Yunice, Wyatt threw Morgan in jail to take the fall for her brother!โ€

Noraโ€™s brow furrowed, shocked. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

Maineโ€™s frustration poured out. โ€œYou have no idea how far Wyatt spoils Yunice. Sheโ€™s been milking her resemblance to you, asking him for everything!โ€

โ€œHe helped her cheat on her SATs, bribed universities, fabricated awards in her hospital wardโ€”anything to make her look like an accomplished academic, just to scrub off that mental hospital label and make her shine!โ€

โ€œBut you, Noraโ€ฆ You spent more than ten years overseas, studying until your family hardly recognized you. Everything you earnedโ€”Yunice got in a single year.โ€

Noraโ€™s fingers twitched, barely noticeable. She frowned. โ€œMaine, Iโ€™m concerned about Morgan. Please donโ€™t bring up anything unrelated.โ€

Maine fell silent, then pulled up an article on her phone. โ€œThis was a week agoโ€”a huge rape and murder case in Beijing. The suspect who got taken away in front of everyone was Yuniceโ€™s biological brother, Oscar.โ€

โ€œBut yesterday, Morgan was suddenly found high at a club. While barely coherent, someone led him into confessing that he killed Elsie. Now heโ€™s behind bars. They say heโ€™s facing the death penaltyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMadam Mary and Mr. Morgan were frantic. They went to Pavilion Hall to beg Wyatt for help, but he wasnโ€™t home. And those two elders had to endure Yuniceโ€™s cold faceโ€”Madam Mary almost fainted from the stress.โ€

Noraโ€™s eyes turned red, veins pulsing at her temples.

She tried to sit up, tried to get out of bed. But after three years of lying still, even simple movements drained herโ€”there was no way she could stand.

Maine saw the tears streaming down her cheeks and the veins straining in her neck as she struggled. Heart aching, she rushed to prop her up. โ€œLook at you like this, and Wyatt still doesnโ€™t care! For all we know, those two bastards are cuddling in bed right now!โ€

โ€œMaine!โ€ Nora snapped.

Pavilion Hall.

There was no sleep to be had tonight.

Wyatt reached out to hold Yuniceโ€™s hand as she faced away from him.

Without even turning her head, she jabbed him with her elbow.

He easily caught her arm and pulled her back into his arms. โ€œWhat are you sulking about now?!โ€

Yunice didnโ€™t even know what she was mad at. She justโ€ฆ couldnโ€™t bring herself to feel at ease, being protected by Wyatt while Nora was still thereโ€”hovering, wounded, and watching.
