Chapter 439 A Brotherโs Convenience
Back when the family faced troubles, things had never gotten out of handโat least not while Elsie was still dating Paul. If anything went wrong, a few sweet words from her would have Paul bending over backwards to solve it.
But now, freshly recovered from illness, Elsie didnโt dare face Paul. With her out of the picture, all the family burdensโbig and smallโfell squarely on Owen.
And Owen, proud as ever, wasnโt the kind to bow his head and beg anyone.
Elsie sobbed, โThen go find Oscar! Momโs not just our momโeveryone needs to help!โ
Right. Lily wasnโt just their mother. Oscar and Yunice should take responsibility too.
With that thought, Owen headed to Oscarโs office, hoping to persuade him to talk Yunice into asking Wyatt for help.
If Wyatt pulled some strings, Lilyโs sentence could be lessenedโor even wiped away entirely.
Still wearing his lab coat, Oscar didnโt even pause from his work. His tone was frosty. โI already told you - Iโm done getting involved in your mess.โ
Owen snapped, โMomโs not just my mom! Youโre the eldest! She raised you the longestโhow can you just abandon her?โ
โI gave you advice,โ Oscar said flatly. โYou refused to take it.โ
If theyโd apologized when they had the chance, this wouldnโt have escalated into jail time.
Owen trailed behind him, raising his voice. โSo now youโre playing the wise man after the fact? Itโs already happeningโshouldnโt solving the problem be the priority now?!โ
Oscar swirled a test tube, unfazed. โIf you think the court was wrong, file an appeal. If you think itโs unfair, go protest. But donโt shout at me - Iโm not a judge or a billionaire. I canโt help you.โ
โโฆโ Owen avoided the test tube Oscar was carelessly waving and insisted, โFine. Iโm not asking you to do much. Just call Yunice. Maybe sheโs changed her mind.โ
โIโve already tried. Canโt get through.โ
Oscar glared at him for half a minute, realizing that if he didnโt cooperate, Owen would wreck his lab just to make a point.
With a sigh, Oscar shook off Owenโs grip and dialed.
Owen leaned in eagerly to listen.
The line rang a few times before someone picked up.
Oscar cut straight to the chase. โYunice, Owen insists on talking to you. Want to take the call?โ
Without waiting, Owen grabbed the phone from him and blurted out, โYunice! Momโs been taken by the police. They say sheโs been sentenced to a year in prison!โ
โYouโre her daughter too. You know Dad loved her the most when he was alive. If he could see how cold youโre being to your own mother, how disappointed do you think heโd beโฆโ
A cold chuckle interrupted him from the other end โ Wyattโs voice. โFunny how sheโs โyour momโ when itโs convenient. The moment something goes wrong, suddenly sheโs just her mom. Real clever.โ
Owen froze the moment he heard Wyatt. His voice stiffened. โI was trying to reach Yunice.โ
โSheโs busy,โ Wyatt said coolly. โYou can talk to me.โ
โโฆ Busy? Too busy to pick up a phone? Or is she just ignoring me and using you as a shield?โ
Leaning against the wall, Wyattโs smile was cold. โYou really are full of yourself.โ
Owen stiffened. โIโm her brother. Donโt I have the right to call her?โ
Wyattโs voice dropped. โSo itโs all about rights for you? You get the benefits, but you skip out on the obligations. Is that it?โ
Owenโs brow furrowed. โThatโs ridiculous. Iโve tried to bring Yunice home and take care of her. She refused. Is that somehow my fault now?โ
โFake support is giving someone a meal,โ Wyatt said. โReal support is understanding their painโand helping them out of it. Have you ever done that?โ
Owen felt even more baffled. โWhat hardship hasnโt she overcome? Yuniceโs life has always been smooth. Sheโs had it better than any of us! Even I have to bow and scrape to her now โ what struggle could she possibly have?!โ
Wyattโs tone turned icy. โPaul abused her for ten years. Did you know that?โ
Oscarโs gaze shot to Owen.
Owen frowned and went silent for a moment. He recalled some of Yunice and Paulโs past, but finally said, โPaul never abused her. They were young. Maybe they crossed some lines, but it was mutual. You canโt call that abuse.โ
Wyatt asked sharply, โSo you do know Paul touched her?โ
Owenโs expression darkened. โEveryone in the capital knows. You mean you didnโt?โ
Wyatt pressed further. โThen when Yunice asked you for help, what did you do?โ
Owen stared back. โWhen did she ever ask me for help?โ
