Chapter 439 A Brotherโ€™s Convenience

Back when the family faced troubles, things had never gotten out of handโ€“at least not while Elsie was still dating Paul. If anything went wrong, a few sweet words from her would have Paul bending over backwards to solve it.

But now, freshly recovered from illness, Elsie didnโ€™t dare face Paul. With her out of the picture, all the family burdensโ€“big and smallโ€“fell squarely on Owen.

And Owen, proud as ever, wasnโ€™t the kind to bow his head and beg anyone.

Elsie sobbed, โ€œThen go find Oscar! Momโ€™s not just our momโ€“everyone needs to help!โ€

Right. Lily wasnโ€™t just their mother. Oscar and Yunice should take responsibility too.

With that thought, Owen headed to Oscarโ€™s office, hoping to persuade him to talk Yunice into asking Wyatt for help.

If Wyatt pulled some strings, Lilyโ€™s sentence could be lessenedโ€“or even wiped away entirely.

Still wearing his lab coat, Oscar didnโ€™t even pause from his work. His tone was frosty. โ€œI already told you - Iโ€™m done getting involved in your mess.โ€

Owen snapped, โ€œMomโ€™s not just my mom! Youโ€™re the eldest! She raised you the longestโ€“how can you just abandon her?โ€

โ€œI gave you advice,โ€ Oscar said flatly. โ€œYou refused to take it.โ€

If theyโ€™d apologized when they had the chance, this wouldnโ€™t have escalated into jail time.

Owen trailed behind him, raising his voice. โ€œSo now youโ€™re playing the wise man after the fact? Itโ€™s already happeningโ€“shouldnโ€™t solving the problem be the priority now?!โ€

Oscar swirled a test tube, unfazed. โ€œIf you think the court was wrong, file an appeal. If you think itโ€™s unfair, go protest. But donโ€™t shout at me - Iโ€™m not a judge or a billionaire. I canโ€™t help you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ Owen avoided the test tube Oscar was carelessly waving and insisted, โ€œFine. Iโ€™m not asking you to do much. Just call Yunice. Maybe sheโ€™s changed her mind.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve already tried. Canโ€™t get through.โ€

Oscar glared at him for half a minute, realizing that if he didnโ€™t cooperate, Owen would wreck his lab just to make a point.

With a sigh, Oscar shook off Owenโ€™s grip and dialed.

Owen leaned in eagerly to listen.

The line rang a few times before someone picked up.

Oscar cut straight to the chase. โ€œYunice, Owen insists on talking to you. Want to take the call?โ€

Without waiting, Owen grabbed the phone from him and blurted out, โ€œYunice! Momโ€™s been taken by the police. They say sheโ€™s been sentenced to a year in prison!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re her daughter too. You know Dad loved her the most when he was alive. If he could see how cold youโ€™re being to your own mother, how disappointed do you think heโ€™d beโ€ฆโ€

A cold chuckle interrupted him from the other end โ€“ Wyattโ€™s voice. โ€œFunny how sheโ€™s โ€˜your momโ€™ when itโ€™s convenient. The moment something goes wrong, suddenly sheโ€™s just her mom. Real clever.โ€

Owen froze the moment he heard Wyatt. His voice stiffened. โ€œI was trying to reach Yunice.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s busy,โ€ Wyatt said coolly. โ€œYou can talk to me.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ Busy? Too busy to pick up a phone? Or is she just ignoring me and using you as a shield?โ€

Leaning against the wall, Wyattโ€™s smile was cold. โ€œYou really are full of yourself.โ€

Owen stiffened. โ€œIโ€™m her brother. Donโ€™t I have the right to call her?โ€

Wyattโ€™s voice dropped. โ€œSo itโ€™s all about rights for you? You get the benefits, but you skip out on the obligations. Is that it?โ€

Owenโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œThatโ€™s ridiculous. Iโ€™ve tried to bring Yunice home and take care of her. She refused. Is that somehow my fault now?โ€

โ€œFake support is giving someone a meal,โ€ Wyatt said. โ€œReal support is understanding their painโ€“and helping them out of it. Have you ever done that?โ€

Owen felt even more baffled. โ€œWhat hardship hasnโ€™t she overcome? Yuniceโ€™s life has always been smooth. Sheโ€™s had it better than any of us! Even I have to bow and scrape to her now โ€“ what struggle could she possibly have?!โ€

Wyattโ€™s tone turned icy. โ€œPaul abused her for ten years. Did you know that?โ€

Oscarโ€™s gaze shot to Owen.

Owen frowned and went silent for a moment. He recalled some of Yunice and Paulโ€™s past, but finally said, โ€œPaul never abused her. They were young. Maybe they crossed some lines, but it was mutual. You canโ€™t call that abuse.โ€

Wyatt asked sharply, โ€œSo you do know Paul touched her?โ€

Owenโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œEveryone in the capital knows. You mean you didnโ€™t?โ€

Wyatt pressed further. โ€œThen when Yunice asked you for help, what did you do?โ€

Owen stared back. โ€œWhen did she ever ask me for help?โ€
