Chapter 438 No Room for Mercy

Last night had been too intense. The bandages Yunice had carefully wrapped around Wyattโ€™s hand had split open, staining the sheets with blood.

He had just changed into fresh linens and tucked her back in bed when Jacksonโ€™s furious shouting echoed from outside.

Yunice looked at him, concerned. Wyatt gave her hand a reassuring pat, then stepped out.

Jackson stood fuming just beyond the office door. In contrast, Wyatt came out lazily draped in a coat, shirt unbuttoned at the collar, tie sloppily loosened.

The old man scanned him from head to toe, voice seething. โ€œWhereโ€™s that whore?โ€

Wyatt raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhoโ€™s the whore?โ€

โ€œThat wh-โ€ Jackson froze, catching himself, then glared at Wyattโ€™s smug expression.

Wyatt strolled out of the office like he didnโ€™t have a care in the world. Jordan followed behind and quietly shut the door.

With his hands in his pockets, Wyatt looked down at the old man from above.

Jacksonโ€™s gaze shifted from the bandage on Wyattโ€™s hand to his face, cold as ice. โ€œYou brawled with your own family over some woman. Where the hell is your head?โ€

Wyatt scoffed. โ€œWho said it was about a woman? I just donโ€™t like Paul. I wanted to beat him upโ€“is that a crime?โ€

Jackson looked like he might snap his cane in half. โ€œSheโ€™s nothing but a tramp used by a thousand men, and the more you treasure her, the more miserable sheโ€™ll end up.โ€

Wyattโ€™s eyes narrowed. He laughed coldly. โ€œThen let me return that sentiment to youโ€“word for word.โ€

Jacksonโ€™s face twitched. He let out a cold grunt and turned to leave.

Only after the old man vanished down the hallway did Jordan say anxiously, โ€œWyattโ€ฆ you think heโ€™ll try something against the missus?โ€

โ€œHe definitely will,โ€ Wyatt replied flatly. โ€œSo itโ€™s a matter of who strikes first.โ€

The Saunders Family

Wellinges Pharma had narrowly avoided collapse after its isolation ward was repurposed by the government, earning them a large subsidy. As director, Owen had received considerable compensationโ€”enough to breathe new life into the hospital.

Right now, he was in his study, speaking impatiently on the phone with Peggy.

As expected, Peggy had called him first. Ever since theyโ€™d run into each other at West Court, sheโ€™d been pestering him every few days, pushing him to visit the Saunders estate.

Owen had no interest in dealing with that bunch of immature, power-hungry fools. Heโ€™d blocked several of Peggyโ€™s numbers alreadyโ€”but she kept changing them and calling again.

She even hired a private investigator to stalk him.

โ€œWhat the hell do you want from me?!โ€ Owen snapped.

Peggy giggled on the other end. โ€œOwen, do you want a wife?โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ he barked.

โ€œAlready in love with someone?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Owen lied through his teeth.

She laughed again. โ€œThen how about breaking up with her and dating me instead?โ€

โ€œYou shameless-!โ€ Owen roared and hung up.

โ€œOwen?โ€ came a weak voice from the doorway.

He turned and saw Elsie standing there.

His expression softened a bit. โ€œElsie, what are you doing up?โ€

โ€œI was tired of lying in bed. Needed to move around.โ€

She sat down across from him and asked, โ€œHas Sis still refused to come home?โ€

Yunice was still staying with Wyatt. The farther she was, the harder it was to keep tabs on herโ€”let alone make a move.

Owen grunted, then added coldly, โ€œForget her.โ€

If she no longer wanted to be part of the Saunders family, then fine. Let them go their separate ways. โ€œOwen! Owen!โ€ Lilyโ€™s panicked voice rang from the stairs.

Startled, Owen and Elsie rushed out of the study just in time to see Lily stumbling up the stairs, with two officers flashing badges behind her.

Lily ducked behind them as the police stepped forward and said, โ€œWeโ€™re enforcing a court ruling. Ms. Lily has been sentenced to one year in prison.โ€

โ€œPlease come with us.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to jail! I didnโ€™t do anything! Just said a few wordsโ€”why should I go to prison?!โ€

Owen hadnโ€™t expected this to escalate so quickly. He tried to bribe the officers. โ€œPlease, officers, canโ€™t we talk about this-โ€

One of them cut him off. โ€œThe prosecution already offered a chance for Ms. Lily to make amends. You refused to issue a public apology.โ€

They hadnโ€™t thought the court would actually follow through with sentencing.

โ€œIโ€™ll apologize now, okay? Right now!โ€ Lily shrieked.

But the officers gave her no chance to cause a scene. They firmly restrained her and hauled her away.

Lily screamed, โ€œOwen! Elsie! Help me! Please, help Mommy!โ€

Both Owen and Elsie stood frozen, their faces pale with shock.

Only after the police car drove off did Elsie clutch Owenโ€™s arm, voice hoarse with panic. โ€œOwen, do somethingโ€ฆโ€

Owen stood there, stunned. He had nothing. No plan. No way out.
