Chapter 348 The Meaning Behind the Scarf

Yunice said, โ€œI know.โ€

After exchanging a few words, she hung up the phone.

Then she fell into a long silence. Things she hadnโ€™t understood before finally started to make sense.

Yunice still remembered the first time she saw that scarf.

At the time, sheโ€™d been sitting at the pavilion in front of Paulโ€™s courtyard. A servant had brought her a scarf. She had asked who sent it, but the servant didnโ€™t tell her.

Later, she wore that scarf, and the old man of the Powell family had taken a second look at her.

Not long after that, news of her engagement to Wyatt had come out.

Back then, she couldnโ€™t figure out why Jackson had made that decision.

Now she understoodโ€”it was because of that scarf.

That scarf was something Wyatt treasured. No one else was even allowed to touch it. And at that moment, it had been draped over her shouldersโ€ฆ

What would Jackson think? Naturally, heโ€™d assume that Wyatt cared deeply for Yuniceโ€”so much so that heโ€™d let her wear something left behind by his mother.

On top of that, Jackson believed marrying her off to Wyatt would be a kind of humiliation to him. Wyatt wouldnโ€™t refuse anyway, so the wedding was arranged.

But now, thinking backโ€”who was playing whom?

Why had Wyatt given her that scarf? Why had he let the old man see it?

It was deliberate. From the very beginning, his goal had been to marry her.

Yunice sat outside for a long time. She knew she had done Wyatt a few favors, but was it really enough for him to go this far?

He couldโ€™ve treated her like Eliannaโ€”just given her a few benefits. Why go through the trouble of marrying her?

If he liked her, then why had he looked at her with such guarded, scrutinizing eyes the first time they met?

What exactly was he feeling?

โ€œMaโ€™am, dinner is ready. Would you like me to go call sir out to eat?โ€ a servant approached and asked quietly.

Even the servants knewโ€”it was best to stay far away from Wyatt.

But while everyone else could hide, she was his wife in name. If even she avoided him, that would be too much.

Yunice got up and went to knock on the bedroom door.

She knocked three times. After waiting a full minute, there was no response.

Seeing this, Yunice didnโ€™t knock again. She knew that when someone was in a bad mood, knocking would only make it worse.

She turned the doorknob quietly and gently cracked the door open, peeking inside.

Wyatt was sitting in a chair, arms resting on the table, doing nothing at all.

Almost as soon as Yunice peeked in, Wyattโ€™s eyes landed on her.

She didnโ€™t ask if he wanted to eatโ€”she gave him option one or two. Of course, he might still choose "none."

But Wyatt didnโ€™t pick either option. Instead, he raised his hand and cupped her face in his palm.

Yunice stayed perfectly still. She couldnโ€™t read him.

Back in the bamboo house on the Powell estate, she had said some things to provoke Paul. Maybe Wyatt had heard them.

There was no guarantee he hadn't eavesdropped.

Yunice had always been the type to stay still unless provoked.

But that strategy didnโ€™t work on Wyatt. With him, she had to be the one to move first.

Yunice said, โ€œEverything I said to Paul todayโ€”I only said it to get under his skin.โ€

Wyatt asked, โ€œWhich part?โ€

Yunice paused, then played coy. โ€œWhichever part you minded most.โ€

Wyatt stared at her. โ€œSaying you love my power, the perks I give youโ€”that was just to piss him off too?โ€

Yunice fell silent. Wyatt really was the only opponent she had who actually used his brain. He always hit her where it hurt.

She couldnโ€™t say yes. If she admitted it was to provoke Paul, that would mean she didnโ€™t love his powerโ€”she loved Wyatt himself.

But Yunice knew very clearlyโ€”what she felt for Wyatt was like the mutual dependence between allies. It hadnโ€™t reached love yet.

But she couldnโ€™t say no either. If she did, Wyatt would be angry.

When Yunice didnโ€™t answer, Wyatt sneered, โ€œLying again.โ€

โ€œLove or not, what difference does it make? In the end, everyoneโ€™s a liar.โ€

His fingers gradually tightened around her face. His eyes grew darker.

A moment later, the back of Yuniceโ€™s neck was suddenly pressed forward as Wyatt pulled her close.

The space between them shrank to just a few inches.

Yunice had no idea what he meant by this, but instinctivelyโ€”she could feel the danger.
