Chapter 347 No Rest for the Dead
Jackson clearly sensed Jensenโs shift in attitude. He tried to placate him. โEverything in the Powell family will be yours and Paulโs in the end. How many years do you think I have left? Wyattโs just trying to mess with you.โ
Jensen lowered his head. โYes, Father.โ
But beneath that lowered head, his eyes had clearly turned cold.
Wyatt entered the main hall and pulled Yunice away without a word.
All the relatives and guests in the room stood up, trying to say something to Wyatt, but he ignored them with a cold face.
After they left the Powell family estate, Wyatt stayed silent. Yunice could tell he was in a bad mood.
Who would be in a good mood on their motherโs death anniversary?
When Wyattโs mother passed away, he was still a childโcompletely powerless against the Powell family.
Yunice remembered hearing Paul brag about it when they were kids, saying that when Wyattโs mother died, the servants held Wyatt back so he couldnโt get close. She was wrapped in a straw mat and taken out of the estate; no one even knew where she ended up.
Over a decade had passed. Wyatt probably didnโt even have a place to mourn her.
What kind of son canโt even bury his own mother? How could he not feel guilty and suffocated?
A person needs something to hold onto in life. His mother was the most important person to him, and yet she hadnโt left him anythingโnot even a trace of memory.
Yunice said softly, โWe can keep looking. Back then, someone must have handled it. If we threaten or bribe the right person, someone will eventually talk.โ
Wyatt didnโt turn his head. His voice was both flat and urgent. โI asked. Not a single one of those old bastards told the truth. Who even knows if anything they said is real?โ
Yunice gripped Wyattโs sleeve tightly, following along while watching his face.
She understood what he meant. Wyattโs mother probably hadnโt received a proper burial. Thatโs why no matter how much pressure he applied, those people wouldnโt talk.
Because if they did, they knew Wyattโs rage would make their fate even worse.
So they all clammed up or tossed out some random location.
After so many years, how could anyone even identify the remains?
And so, the end result was that Wyatt lost his mother foreverโwithout even a place to mourn her.
And now Jackson had the nerve to put on a fake mourning ceremony? Of course, Wyatt would lose it.
In the car, Wyattโs tone was cold as he barked at Jordan, โKeep squeezing Powell Corpโs market. Donโt spare a single one of those old men or Jensenโs lackeys. If Iโm miserable, then no one gets to feel good.โ
Jordan froze for a second, then gave Yunice a worried glance.
Wyatt must have been truly enragedโhe didnโt even bother hiding this kind of talk from Yunice.
Yunice minimized her presence and didnโt say a word.
After Jordan dropped them off at Pavilion Hall, he immediately went to move against the Powell family.
Wyatt locked himself in his room.
She didnโt know Wyatt well enough. She had no idea how to calm him down in a situation like this.
She was afraid of stepping on a landmine and dragging herself into it.
But doing nothing felt disloyal.
In the end, she called Joe. She chatted for a bit, then asked if he knew anything about Wyattโs taboos related to his mother.
Joe didnโt know much, but after all those years of working together, he did know a bit.
โYou donโt have to worry about it. Itโs like this every year.โ
โWhen this month rolls around, no one dares get close to Wyatt. Everyone keeps their distance. Just do the same. Once he adjusts, itโll pass.โ
After saying that, he suddenly realizedโYunice was now living with Wyatt. Sure, she could avoid him during the day, but what about at night?
Joe said, โThereโs one thing of Wyattโs momโs that you absolutely must not touch.โ
Yunice asked, โWhat is it?โ
โA pink cashmere scarf. Thereโs a koi fish stitched at the end. Very recognizable.โ
Yuniceโs head snapped up.
Joe noticed the silence on her end and knew something was off. Alarmed, he asked, โWhatโs wrong?โ
She couldnโt have touched it already, could she?
Yunice was living in Pavilion Hall. It was normal for her to clean up the place. If she had seen the scarf was old and tossed itโฆ.
Then she was dead meat.
Joeโs voice rose in panic. Yuniceโs pupils gradually stilled. She answered calmly, โNothing. I just remembered. Iโve seen that scarf before.โ
Joe let out a sigh of relief. โWhatever you do, donโt touch it. Donโt even try to wash it. Honestly, itโs best if you donโt mess with anything in Pavilion Hall. Itโs way too easy to set him off.โ
Then he realized his words might come off as offensive, so he quickly added, โWyattโs carrying a lot emotionally. Itโs only natural that youโฆโ
