Chapter 443: Sheโ€™s Not Someone You Can Touch

โ€œMs. Thornton, what can I do for you?โ€

After the call connected, Septimus spoke and chuckled, stepping away from the gambling table. The surrounding people turned their gazes on him in unison, exchanging puzzled looks. After all, Septimus never let anything interrupt his gambling sessions. Yet, this time, he left solely because of a single phone call. This naturally sparked everyoneโ€™s curiosity. Who on earth was he speaking to?

โ€œHow do you know I need something from you? Weโ€™re old friends; canโ€™t I just call to check up on you?โ€ Madelynโ€™s voice was casual.

Upon hearing this, Septimus burst into hearty laughter. โ€œMs. Thornton, Iโ€™ve grown accustomed to your style. You never show up without a reason. What brings you to me this time? Just tell me.โ€

Madelyn chuckled. โ€œIt seems youโ€™re really good at reading people, Mr. Septimus, so I guess I wonโ€™t beat around the bush.โ€ She made her intentions clear. โ€œActually, I want you to help me investigate an illicit drug.โ€

โ€œAnother illicit drug?โ€ Septimus asked, surprised. โ€œMs. Thornton, you claim youโ€™re not a drug dealer, so why do you keep looking for illicit drugs?โ€

Madelyn snorted coldly. โ€œWhy do you care? All I need is your help.โ€

Septimus chuckled and nodded. โ€œAlright, alright. Whatever you say. Your wish is my command.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m glad you know your place,โ€ Madelyn replied teasingly. She then spoke candidly. โ€œI will send you the exact composition of the drug shortly. Use your influence in the black market to find out if anyone named Janessa purchased it. Thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all?โ€

โ€œYes, itโ€™s as simple as that.โ€

After a brief exchange, their conversation ended. Madelyn instructed, โ€œRemember, inform me immediately if you find anything on Janessa.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€ Septimus nodded.

Madelyn abruptly ended the call. Septimus immediately began the investigation. Several hours later, he called back to report the results.

โ€œSo, did you find anything?โ€ Madelyn asked.

Septimus nodded. โ€œWe found that a woman named Janessa purchased the illicit drug from one of our black-market dealers.โ€

โ€œJust as expected!โ€ Madelyn narrowed her eyes. โ€œWhen was it sold to Janessa?โ€ The timing of Rupertโ€™s incident had to be consistent with Janessaโ€™s purchase; only then could it serve as evidence.

Septimus said, โ€œThe dealer mentioned it was bought about half a month ago.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œI am. The drug is extremely rare, so the dealer must have kept a record.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good then.โ€

Madelyn nodded and instructed, โ€œSeptimus, keep an eye on the black-market dealer. I might need him to testify.โ€

Septimus readily agreed. โ€œNo problem.โ€

Madelyn immediately relayed the information to Cheryl.

After hearing the news, Cheryl expressed her outrage. โ€œThat despicable Janessa, sheโ€™s heartless enough to harm her own father! Madelyn, Iโ€™m going to call the police and have her arrested.โ€

โ€œUh huh,โ€ Madelyn nodded.

Cheryl hesitated. โ€œJanessaโ€™s aunt is powerful. What if I get her arrested, but her aunt bails her out again?โ€

Madelyn furrowed her brows. Rachelโ€™s identity remained a mystery; Madelyn still didnโ€™t know her profession. Yet, she secured Janessaโ€™s releaseโ€”a feat no ordinary individual could accomplish. If they didnโ€™t deal with Janessaโ€™s aunt, Janessa would cause more trouble, especially with such a powerful backer.

Madelynโ€™s expression grew somber. She said to Cheryl, โ€œCall the police first. Iโ€™ll handle Janessaโ€™s aunt.โ€

Following their phone call, Cheryl alerted the authorities.

That night, at Elite Club, the dance floor pulsed with music, disco lights flashing over the ecstatic faces of the crowd. Janessa sat at the bar, downing drink after drink. Her recent business failures had dampened her spirits, so she drowned her sorrows in liquor.

An unfamiliar man approached. โ€œHey, beautiful, how about we share a drink?โ€

Janessa immediately splashed a glass of wine on him.

โ€œYouโ€™ve got some nerve, b*tch, daring to throw your drink at me! Youโ€™re asking for trouble!โ€ The man was infuriated, rolling up his sleeves.

Janessa, in a foul mood, picked up another glass and splashed it on his face.

โ€œSo what if I did? Stay away from me!โ€

The man was taken aback by her brazenness. After a moment of stunned silence, he was outraged. โ€œYou b*tch, I merely invited you for a drink, and you disrespected me. Donโ€™t blame me for being harsh now!โ€ He raised his arm to slap her.

Janessa, terrified, shut her eyes. However, the expected pain didnโ€™t come. Puzzled, she opened her eyes to see Javier, a handsome man, firmly grasping the attackerโ€™s arm. โ€œIf you know whatโ€™s good for you, stay away! My mistress is not someone you can lay a finger on.โ€

Javier struck the manโ€™s wrist.

โ€œAh, it hurts! Iโ€™m sorry, bro. I was wrong! Iโ€™ll leave!โ€ the man cried, pleading.

Javier let go, then kicked him. โ€œScram!โ€

The terrified man fled. Janessa, realizing sheโ€™d been rescued by her subordinate, Javier, heaved a sigh of relief.
