Chapter 40: Let Him Go Abroad

I looked toward the sand and saw my uncle leaning against the bed. Although he was wearing an oversized hospital gown, his demeanor was far from timid. There was stubble on his face, but it didn’t diminish his intensity. His eyes were intense as he stared silently at Conis, his focus unwavering. I was surprised; I had never seen my uncle acting so authoritatively in the past. He had always been reticent, giving the impression of a melancholy person. Curtis looked shocked, fear in his eyes. His pupils bulged as he stared at me and yelled angrily, “Then you’re not a caretaker at all! You’re something else entirely! You’ll do anything for money, won’t you? You were even willing to hide a man of his stature! Konej is alive and well, so why are you in such a rush to cheat? Do you have any respect for my family at all? Wait here for me! I’m going back right now to tell my mother!” He pointed angrily at me and let out a roar.

Then, retreating slightly, he mumbled something I couldn't understand. I then noticed Uncle Benjamin had turned bright red with anger, so the family mediated. “Bhide Benjamin, don’t stoop to his level. It’s not worth getting angry about.” I offered him a glass of water to try and calm him down, but he looked intently into my eyes. “I’m not going to help you and just let you get bullied. Is that why you want a divorce?” He had been calling her “war” the day before, but now he was calling her “Jenning,” which amused me. I explained the situation simply, taking him seriously.

Uncle Perjantin pressed his legs together and stopped speaking. He looked at me and said, “I’ll help you teach them a lesson.” That’s why I didn’t take the bait. The tempting family wouldn’t be easy to deal with. Besides, Uncle Benjamin had been cut off by my grandfather and had no money. The divorce was the most pressing matter.

When I arrived at the office, I realized that even the reception staff were new. A new receptionist immediately greeted me warmly. “You’re here! Come and wait for a moment.” During my wait, the existing staff members all nodded politely. I couldn’t help shaking my head; I could acutely feel how practical these people were. Their attitudes were completely different from my last visit. A moment later, someone escorted me downstairs and smiled as he saw me. “You’re here, Mr. Yates! Please come with me.”

He explained, “Ms. Jenning is still in a meeting. I’ll take you to her office to wait.” I passed Ms. Grant and said, “Ms. Grant, you can go ahead with your work. I’d like to walk around for a bit.” I wandered around the office; most of the staff had gone to eat lunch. The remaining workers were all congregated in the common area.

I approached the conference room door and peeked inside. Yvette sat at the table. Her skin was pale, her expressionless face looking cold and distant. No matter how difficult the situation, her composure was flawless. Her intelligence, wisdom, and the diary she possessed as a mature woman were apparent. It was unsurprising that I had liked her so much in my previous life. After all, who wouldn’t like a rich, pretty lady from a good family with a very good education?

I waited a long time, but the meeting still wasn’t finished. I went to Yvette’s office and sat in her chair to wait for her. Without thinking, I fell asleep with my head on the table. I felt footsteps approaching, stopping beside my ear. A light sensation brushed my lips, making me very alert.

I opened my eyes and saw Yvette standing in front of me. I sat up, startled, but my eyes were still adjusting to the light, and I couldn’t see her expression clearly. There were faint lipstick marks on her lips, and she looked sideways at me. “Did you come to apologize?” she asked.

“Why would I apologize? I didn’t do anything wrong,” I retorted. This sparked a brief argument. I wondered why she thought I was here to apologize. If there were to be any apologies, it should have been from her. She began flipping through some documents.

Ignoring the dance around the issue, I told Yvette, “I’m giving you one last chance. Get divorced from me willingly now, and everything will be fine.” Vertin didn't react; she was too focused on the documents, and calmly said, “I told you the other day I’m not going to divorce you.”

“Kundalini is leaving on that flight tonight at 2:00 pm, and he's leaving the country. You'll go see him off, won't you?” Just as I expected, Yvette was calmly handling the situation.

She still didn’t look up at me, so I couldn't gauge her emotions. I looked at her and said, “I arranged for someone to send Randall to the airport. If you want to see him off yourself, then sign the divorce agreement.”

“I’m not asking for much. I just want some settlement fees. Once you deduct the 500,000 for the hospital, you’ll only have to give me 1.5 million.” Yvette finally put down the documents and looked up. Surprisingly, she seemed calm and unconcerned about Randall. A slight smile played on her lips as she said calmly, “My husband is such a considerate man. You even arranged for him to go abroad. Actually, whether or not I see him off isn’t important, as long as he manages to go abroad successfully.”

I looked at her in surprise, leaning over her table. “Yvette, you heard me clearly, didn’t you? I told you that Randall is under my control and about to go abroad. Don’t you even want to see him off?” This didn’t seem like her at all. Hadn’t she always been devoted to Randall? In the past, she’d get nervous just hearing his name. How could she be so calm now? She didn’t even want to go to the airport! What was going on?

“He’s just going abroad. It’s not like he’ll never come back. There’s no need to be so dramatic,” Yvette said, glancing at me, displeased. She calmly added, “I’m more concerned about you than Randall. I’ve already paid Lita the 500,000 you owe her.” I understood why she emphasized that.

“Owen, you now owe me 500,000. Don’t forget to pay me back, with interest.”
