Chapter 39: Let Her Miscarry
“What?” I asked, shocked. “What is the reason you’re firing him?” This was unexpected. According to the timeline in my last life, Chase shouldn’t have been fired for another two or three years. Why was it happening earlier this time?
Thomas explained, “He’s using his own web of connections to manipulate things and damage the company image, so Ms. Penting has decided not to keep him.”
I was momentarily tongue-tied. After all, I was the one who had told tales to Yvette about Chase being involved with multiple people. However, I suddenly thought of another question. Chase had been fired in this life because of me, but what about in the previous life?
In my previous life, Chase had excelled at his work. How, after he bullied me, was he caught cheating that very night? His reputation was ruined, and he was fired. My heart skipped a beat. I felt like someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes!
Who was it? Were they helping me teach the bad guys a lesson, or were they trying to bring down Yvette’s company?
Oliver’s newer rang out, breaking into my train of thought. “Mr. Yates, Ms. Jennings is in a meeting. She told me to tell you that if there’s anything you need, you can go straight in.”
“If you don’t go, she might have new arrangements. If so, she won’t have time to…”
“Alright. I understand,” I answered before hanging up.
I had to go to the office to see Yvette. I had to direct this. However, we’d had a terrible argument last night, and it would have been fruitless to try and force a discussion.
I thought for a moment and sent a message to Zia to ask about Raidall. As I suspected, she told me that Raidall would be leaving the country on a private flight that night. Yvette’s first love was about to go far, far away. She must have been very reluctant to let him go.
I had forgotten when she had realized in the past life that the person she truly loved was Raidall, but it probably wouldn’t matter. Logically, I should force Yvette to face her own feelings because that was the only way she would agree to a divorce.
Zia was just unlucky. When I was set free, things were determined to put this divorce behind us. I would probably start getting flak for her. I couldn’t bring myself to do that to her, but I could still nudge things in that direction. After all, I…
I gripped my phone as my fingers tapped across the screen. Once I had dealt with my affairs, I went back to the hospital to see my uncle.
Lila wasn’t back yet, and when Uncle Benjamin heard I wanted to go and see Yvette, there was an understanding look in his eyes. He smiled slightly. “Go ahead.”
I nodded and walked straight outside. As soon as I got to the door, I saw a familiar figure hanging around in the ride. He was wearing a black t-shirt, torn jeans, and a pair of huge sunglasses. He looked like a total thug.
Coincidentally, he turned to look toward the hospital entrance as he passed by. When he saw me, he retreated a few steps and stopped at the door. He pushed his sunglasses up to the tip of his nose and looked at me, smirking. “Oh, I was wondering who that handsome man was. Turns out it’s my brother-in-law?”
“My brother-in-law,” but he clearly wasn’t being sincere. He was being sarcastic.
Yes, the sloppy-looking man standing in front of me was Yvette’s younger brother, Curtis. I always felt like I’d swallowed a fly whenever I saw him.
I looked him up and down and shook my head slowly. Curtis took off his sunglasses when he saw what I was doing and stood up straight. “Why are you shaking your head?”
“No reason.” I didn’t want to waste time talking to him, so I aimed to leave. However, Curtis held out a hand to stop me.
His gaze flicked into the hospital room, and he smiled triumphantly. “Owen, have you sunk so low that you’re now working as a caretaker? Do you still want to divorce my sister when you’re in this state? My mom was right. You are the cause of all your own troubles.”
I couldn’t be bothered to pay any attention to him. Curtis was much too noisy. “Move aside. I don’t have time for this nonsense.”
Curtis was dissatisfied with my lack of reaction. “Owen, you used to obey my every word. I showed you some respect because you were behaving fairly well.”
“Who gave you the guts to talk to me like this? My mother says that you’re not even fit to lick my boots! You’re like one of our family’s servants! You’re a veritable slave!”
“How dare you try to act tough in front of me now? Without my sister, you’re nothing but a penniless country bumpkin. If I were you, I’d be going to my sister in tears and kneeling in front of her to plead for mercy. Things might go better for me if I did!”
He was being very loud, and everyone around us stopped and looked curiously at the spectacle we were making.
I did consider it rather funny. In my last life, I had known very well that Curtis was a spoiled, pampered brat. No matter how well I did, he would always see me as a servant.
Then, to love the people and things that she loved as well, which was why I had endured all kinds of treatment from Curtis. However, I wouldn't be so yielding in this life. If I was unhappy, even Yvette would have to stand aside, let alone Curtis.
In a firm voice, “I don’t think that’s any business of yours. If you have time to blather on here with me, you should spend it taking care of your sister. If an accident happens, the Jennings family name will be humiliated.”
The people who were watching us with interest immediately rushed from me to Carlos. He looked startled, and his expression changed drastically. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
I raised an eyebrow casually. “Are you going to deny it? That smell of women’s perfume on you is pretty strong. It’s expensive perfume too, which means that you were just in close contact…”
“…teasing in the hospital wards, and you’re not injured. To be dressed neatly, which just means that you just bought someone else’s…”
“I barely had a minor condition. How would a bad seed like you even bother with that…”
“…fourth head.” He said angrily, “Who’re you calling a…?”
“I switch the subject immediately. Since you actually came with her, it must mean…”
“…dated? You’re insulting me! I’ll have my mother teach you a lesson!”
I smiled and uttered contempt silently. “How old are you, Curtis? Is looking for your mother the only thing you know how to do?”
“Let me give you some advice. The Jennings family is a prestigious family. If you have a child out of wedlock, your mother might not say anything, but your father is not going to forgive you,” Someone in the crowd couldn’t help laughing. They said loudly, “I suspect he’s not just a jerk; he’s also a mama’s boy. He looks like a normal person, but he’s a total beast.” Curtis’s pride was the thing he valued most, and he went livid and white when he heard them laughing at him.
He clenched his fists, and his knuckles cracked as he stared viciously. “Owen, I think you’ve gone mad. You were acting like a man at the last family banquet.”
Chapter 29: Let Her Miscarry
“To wit, that my sister is infertile, and you bullied my mother, and now you’ve come to bully me. Do you really think that my family is a pushover?”
“Listen to me. You’ll reap the consequences of offending me today. Kneel down right now and apologize to me, and I’ll let your comments just now pass. Or…”
“Or what?” Before I could answer, Uncle Benjamin suddenly broke his silence from inside the hospital room. His voice was rich and strong. “Young man, try and touch him if you dare.”
