Chapter 41: Pay Me Back Before We Get Divorced
I stood up straight and said righteously, “I don’t have any money. If you think you’re so great, then divorce me and take the money from the settlement.” Yvette laughed contemptuously. “You’re a better businessman than I am. You’re using my money to pay off your debts, and I’ll even end up giving you more money.”
“Try not to let it just get you a leaning group? You can buy managing it. Perhaps in a month’s time, there’ll be two more training groups in the world.”
I felt Tilonnhe was mocking me, so I said through gritted teeth, “I may not have a lot of money, but don’t try to fool me. I’m very grateful that you helped me pay off the 500 thousand, which is why you only need to give me 15 million if we get divorced.”
“If you refuse to give me that, then this will be our common property as husband and wife. Therefore, there’s no such thing as your money. Interest will also be completely…”
Her dark eyes shone as she stated straight at me, “At least you’re not that dumb. So, do you want to get divorced or not?”
My expression darkened, and I said without hesitating, “Of course, I want to get divorced.”
Yvette’s expression darkened visibly. She suddenly stood up and lunged at me. I was startled and instinctively recoiled, but accidentally tripped on my own foot and fell backward. Luckily, her desk was behind me. She suddenly reached out to grab my arm and stop my fall, which made it less painful when I fell against the table.
Yvette’s body leaned against me, and her fair and slender hands were on the desk, propping her up. Our eyes met, and our breaths mingled. She was inches away from me.
I was stunned. She would only have to bend her head to kiss me. Instinctively, I wanted to hold my hands out in front of her chest, but I couldn’t do that, so I did my best to curl up. I looked at her.
Her bright, dark eyes looked relieved, and there seemed to be a slight tinge of affection in them. “If you want to get divorced, fine. However, you have to pay me back.”
I glared at her. “It’s not that you need the money. You know I need the money! Why do you have to force me into this situation?” She scoffed and stood up straight. “I don’t need the money, but I’m also not willing to spend it on you.”
“If you were mine, then I’d be duty-bound to take care of you, but you want to divorce me.”
“You don’t want to be my husband anymore. Why should you still enjoy the benefits of being my husband?” There was an absolute ruthlessness in Yvette’s voice. I could hear that she meant every single word, but it just fueled the fire of the rage in my heart.
“No matter what, we’ve been married a year, and I took care of you wholeheartedly for a year. Are you really going to be so ungrateful?” she asked scorning me. This entire thing could be solved if Yvette just agreed to it, but she was making things difficult for me on purpose. If she only had room in her heart for Handall and not for me, couldn’t she treat me in a gentler manner, especially when I had been so sincere to her in the past!
Divorce would be better for both of us. What else was she unhappy about? Why did she insist on opposing me?
I suddenly had a flash of inspiration. I rose from the table and fixed a sharp gaze on her. “Are you angry because you feel embarrassed that I was the one who mentioned divorce first? You can be the one to divorce me. I don’t care, as long as you’re willing to get divorced.”
I wasn’t sure whether I was imagining it, but Yvette’s expression seemed to become even colder after I finished speaking. She looked at me with cold contempt, an expression that…
The fury in my heart was ignited once more. She always behaved that way! She always looked down imperiously at me and mocked me, as if whatever I did was wrong and that nothing I did was right. I was just a useless lout. However, she never said anything to me directly. She just kept me guessing.
This had made me break down frequently. This time, however, she said nothing. She kicked the chair aside, making a loud noise, and turned to leave.
“Twede!” My chest tightened, but this time, I didn’t break down. I was so angry that I snatched up whatever was beside me and threw it—a heavy ashtray.
The object sailed past Yvette and landed on the floor beside her. She stopped in her tracks, but she didn’t turn back. She only picked up the blazer that she had thrown casually over a chair and kicked the broken shards of the ashtray contemptuously before she left without hesitating.
I was so angry that… Yvette was such an asshole! Ever since I had been reborn, I hadn’t felt as enraged as I did right then, despite…
Arguments that had been in…
I had cautioned so much in my previous life, but I had stood up for myself and for justice with every single person in this life. Yvette was the only person who kept throwing obstacles in my path. Did she just bring bad luck to me?
As I was pondering it, my phone rang, and the sound of the notification brought me back into my thoughts. I glanced at the screen and saw the message that Zia had sent. “Owen, Randall says that he’s…”
The message washed away the anger in my heart, like a clean, quiet stream. Randall was craving the country today. Very likely, Yvette would realize how deep her feelings for Handall were.
We were glad that she might be pleading with me to get dressed very soon, couldn’t help feeling rather triumphant. Zia sent another message: “Owen, thank you so much for arranging for someone to take Randall to the airport today. I had an urgent meeting and couldn’t leave at all. Luckily, you were able to send someone to the airport as well.” I replied, “It’s nothing.”
The thought was that I had only ranged for a little while; I didn't have time to work on her. In any case, even if Yvette remained neatly determined not to get divorced, the wheel of history would put Randall and me in a true-love scenario, and when that…
The day she chose me would be the day that Zia’s pain would end. I didn’t know if it would hurt more to love someone who didn’t love you back, or to have the person you loved taken from you, but we were both to be pitied.
—Chapter 41: Pay Me Back Before We Get Divorced
I sighed and got ready to leave, but I stopped suddenly and made an absolute mess of Yvette’s desk. I scattered her papers everywhere and created chaos before leaving in satisfaction. Yvette was a bit of a neat freak, and she was very particular about how neatly her documents were arranged. I was pleased that she would be in a bad mood for the entire day when she went to work tomorrow and saw that messy desk!
The next day, I went to Aurora Studio as usual. When I got to the door, I saw a balloon arch made up of colorful balloons with a banner hung over it that read, “Welcome top designer Rowan Moonie on your official addition to Aurora Studio!”
Almost all the staff were congregated at the office entrance. I looked closely and saw that Nancy was dressed in casual attire and was walking toward me. She had a charming smile on her face and looked very attractive.
“I would like to officially introduce this gentleman to everyone today. This is Owen Yates!” she announced loudly.
I smiled awkwardly and tugged at her as I said in a low voice, “You don’t have to be so over the top! You can just make a simple introduction.”
Nancy ignored my advice and continued to say enthusiastically, “Just a couple of days ago, our game exhibition ran into some unexpected difficulties; our costumes were damaged, but we still managed to get second place, and that was all thanks to the outstanding performance of Rowan…”
“From now on, he will be our game director. Everyone, please give him a warm welcome!”
Applause rang out, and Nancy turned to me, beaming. “Rowan, say a few words to everybody.”
I suddenly felt a strong fear of public speaking. I wondered inwardly why Nancy was so bad at keeping things toned down. She really could have skipped this boring and awkward speech.
Although I was displeased, I flashed a diplomatic smile. “Hello, everyone. I’m Rowan. In the days to come, I hope to work hard with everyone and grow together so that we can realize our shared dream and bring our company to greater heights.”
As soon as I finished, Nancy led a thunderous round of applause. I noticed Zia in the crowd. She was clapping the hardest and smiling the brightest. At the same time, I saw a few staff members in business casual clothes, and their applause seemed perfunctory. There was a look of contempt in their eyes.
I remembered those people. I had seen them at the office before. I smiled slightly and pretended that I hadn’t seen them.
I spent the entire afternoon thinking about the kinds of roles in games that…
Officially starting my job was not a complex process. Nancy just explained the job briefly to me, and then… I would be likely to become the next trend.
Although I had never had a proper job, I knew that it was best to maintain a certain distance between superiors and subordinates. This was for superiors to maintain a sense of authority. However, I felt bored being in the office by myself, so I decided to let Zia move into my office. Nancy was very surprised about this. “Owen, are you sure you want to do that?”
I nodded. “Is there a problem?”
Nancy appeared to be about to say something, but in the end, she just said, “You can do whatever you like at work, but I advise you not to become too close to women in your personal life. Eve is sure to be very angry if she finds out.”
