Chapter 214
I was very wary of Alicia because she didn’t seem to be behaving normally right now. Her face was haggard, and her eyes were unfocused. In fact, she looked as if she had gone through a major change and hadn’t even had the time to change her clothes.
When she saw me avoiding her gaze, she rushed over and attempted to grab my bag. I didn’t dare put up a huge fight for it, afraid of hurting the child in my belly. Her expression changed instantly after digging out the prenatal checkup report, and she even looked a little hysterical.
“You’re pregnant? What right do you have? What right do you have to get pregnant while I’ve lost everything? I’m a woman favored by the heavens! I’m Jonathan’s childhood sweetheart! What right does a latecomer like you have to be his wife? What right do you have? Answer me!”
I took a step back, unwilling to listen to her nonsense. “If you have anything to say, go directly to Jonathan. This has nothing to do with me.”
Jonathan should be the one to handle this matter. I had been too foolish before in assuming that his heart wouldn’t waver as long as I was the only woman by his side. However, a man like him would fall for another woman at the drop of a hat. There was no need for me to spend my time warning other women away from him, as it would simply be a waste of energy.
Alicia suddenly laughed maniacally and took a step forward, staring intently at me. “Are you laughing at me? Do you know that Jonathan has completely ceased cooperation with the Zimmer family? There’s no way he’ll help me now, and that’s caused me to become a laughingstock within my social circle. Is that why you’re laughing at me?”
I frowned and took a step back. Just as I was about to turn around and leave, Alicia moved to stand in my way again.
“You were also the one who told him about all those incidents, weren’t you?” she yelled.
I was baffled. “What incidents?”
“You told him that it was me who deliberately made things difficult for you behind his back! You told him that I was sowing discord between you and him! And you also told him that I was the one who pushed you into the swimming pool, didn’t you?”
I sneered. “You already went that far, so why would you be afraid of people knowing that you were behind those incidents?”
Alicia suddenly rushed toward me, screaming, “I knew it was you!”
Chapter 215
I reflexively protected my stomach, only to see her take out a dagger out of nowhere. She seemed to be aiming for my life. For her to resort to something as extreme as this, it looked like she had really been backed into a corner.
I heard a low cry of “Elise!”, but the pain I expected did not come. It was only when I opened my eyes that I realized Jonathan was standing protectively in front of me. I watched as the dagger was stabbed into his abdomen, and he started bleeding profusely. His face was as pale as a sheet, but he still looked silently in my direction to ensure that I was fine. He raised a hand to touch my cheek, only for it to droop down powerlessly in the end.
“Jonathan!” I called out, but he could no longer hear me.
There was white everywhere I looked in the hospital. I followed behind the nurses frantically pushing the stretcher toward the emergency room. It was covered in blood, and so were my hands. I held onto Jonathan’s hand, unable to tell if the persistent trembling was from him or me. Yet, even in this situation, he squeezed my palm and asked gently, “Are you alright, Elise?”
“I’m fine, so please stop talking. Stop talking…”
Every time he spoke, he would use up all his energy. I just wanted him to be okay.
When he raised a hand to wipe away my tears, a choked sob almost tore its way out of my throat.
“Don’t cry,” he said. “I’ll feel bad.”
“Stop talking already! Just don’t talk! You have to be alright! I won’t allow you to not be alright… Do you hear me? Please don’t make me feel guilty for the rest of my life…”
