Chapter 215
Jonathan squeezed my palm and used the last of his strength to say, “If I’m not so fortunate this time, you should start a new life… Widows don’t need to go through divorce procedures…”
Suddenly, he smiled and added, “At least we’d still be husband and wife.”
“Don’t say silly things like that!” I yelled at him.
I wanted to cry out loud, afraid that he really wouldn’t make it through this.
Familiar feelings from the past swept through me, and I realized that all I had done was suppress my feelings for him.
I wanted to forget him in order to protect myself.
Given time, I really might have been able to forget him, but now his life was hanging by a thread just after I remembered everything that happened between us.
As a result, I couldn’t set these feelings aside.
However, I still wanted to divorce him, and I hoped that he would be able to walk out of that operating room safe and sound.
We would then be able to sign the divorce agreement, make our peace, and go our separate ways.
The light above the door of the operating room remained on.
I sat on a chair outside and waited.
My hands were covered in fresh blood, all of which belonged to Jonathan.
In my eyes, everything happening around me at the moment had nothing to do with me.
At least, that was until Jonathan’s mother–Layla Cross–asked me hastily, “How’s Jonathan’s condition?”
It was then that I finally glanced up at her dully. “Sorry. I don’t know what the situation is yet… The doctors are doing their best to save him.”
Layla’s eyes rolled back in her head, and she almost fainted.
I thought she would blame me for what happened to Jonathan, but she didn’t say anything about it.
After calming down, she glanced at me before telling me to wait here.
I didn’t know what she meant by that, so I simply did as she asked and waited.
After some time, I saw her dragging Alicia over by the hair. She jerked Alicia forward forcefully.
“She was the one who did this, right?”
I paused for a moment before nodding.
Layla proceeded to grab Alicia by the hair again and slam her to the floor. “I won’t forgive you if anything happens to my son!”
Alicia wailed, “Mrs. Ford! Mrs. Ford! It’s all Elise’s fault… It has nothing to do with me! She was the one I tried to kill! Why would I want to hurt Jonathan?”
Layla slapped her twice. “Do you think I’ll let you off for saying that? She’s my daughter-in-law! I won’t forgive you either if you hurt her!”
I looked at Layla in shock when I heard this.
My throat felt tight. I always assumed that she didn’t like me, so I never expected her to say such a thing.
In fact, I even thought she would put the blame on me.
I was indeed Alicia’s intended target, after all, and Jonathan had gotten hurt blocking the knife for me.
Alicia sounded absolutely broken when she asked, “Why? You clearly used to like me, Mrs. Ford…”
“That’s because I was blind before!” Layla shouted bitterly. “I did like you before. I thought that you were sensible and well-behaved, but love can’t be forced. My son doesn’t like you, so I can’t exactly force you two to be together!
“Even if I don’t think the partner he chose for himself is a good fit for him, at least her heart is in the right place! Time has proven that he’s a better judge of character than I am!”
She continued sadly, “I’m aware of everything you’ve done now. We didn’t make a fuss for your grandfather’s sake, but we didn’t expect you to go from bad to worse and come up with such a vicious scheme!
“If anything happens to Jonathan, don’t you even think of living the rest of your life in peace!”
As she spoke, she made a call to Jonathan’s father, Samson Ford, who was also on the way over.
Layla told him over the phone, “Make sure the Zimmer family doesn’t get to live too comfortably! And tell them that it’s all Alicia Zimmer’s fault!”
