Chapter 756
โDonโt be like this,โ I said, my voice shaking.
Nathan mustโve realized heโd freaked me out. After a moment of silence, he spoke quietly. โSorry. I shouldnโt have gotten so emotional. Maybe you never compared us at all. Maybe you just simply like him more.โ
โNathan, thatโs not how love works. Itโs not about who gives more or who tries harder,โ I said. Honestly, even I didnโt really get it.
โYeah, I get it. Itโs like fateโor maybe the matchmaker godโjust snipped our thread and tangled yours with his,โ Nathan muttered, sounding bitter at the world.
โWhether my thread and his are really tangled upโฆ who knows,โ I replied, my tone bitter.
โWhy arenโt you more confident?โ Nathan caught the bitterness in my voice. โIs it because he doesnโt love you enough? Or is it just that you feel he doesnโt?โ
โItโs not that. I just donโt have much faith in myself,โ I replied softly.
Nathan suddenly snapped, cursing. โDid that bastard Jared mess you up so bad you canโt trust love anymore?โ
I paused for a moment, then said, โHeโs the one who taught me how to look at love.โ
โHeโs got it coming even more than I do,โ Nathan grumbled, then added, โItโs late. Iโll stop bothering you now. Get some sleep.โ
I wanted to say something to show I cared, but in the end, I just ended the call in silence.
The next morning, I ran into Quinn at the office.
Last time, Jared had mentioned that Quinn was chasing after Nathan, and I was still a little surprised by that.
Quinn walked in without her usual pride. When she looked at me, she seemed a bit unsure of herself.
โWhat should I call you now?โ Quinn asked, sizing me up.
โJust call me by my name,โ I replied.
โWhatever, everyone calls you Ms. Murphy, so I will too,โ Quinn said, dragging a chair over and sitting down across from me. โDid my brother mention that Iโm chasing after Nathan now?โ
I nodded. โHe mentioned it.โ
โNathan likes you, right?โ Quinn asked, giving me that โI already knowโ look.
I replied calmly, โThatโs a separate issue.โ
โCan you tell me how you got him to fall for you?โ Quinn asked, her voice tinged with urgency.
I paused, a little surprised. โAre you sure youโre asking the right person?โ
โNope, I know exactly what Iโm doing. You and Nathan are overโmy brother came home drunk last night and told me everything. Now youโre about to marry Edward,โ Quinn said, all serious. โSince you and Nathan are done, this is my chance to make my move.โ
I glanced at Quinn. She was still driven by self-interest, just like in my previous life, but at least now she knew what she wanted.
โSorry, I canโt help you. Whatever happened between me and him was last year,โ I replied calmly, turning her down.
โSo, you think Iโm not good enough for him?โ Quinn suddenly looked annoyed. โYouโre divorced and Iโm still singleโso why is it okay for you to date him, but not me? What do I have that you donโt?โ
I leaned back in my chair, giving Quinn an amused look. She was still as blindly confident as ever.
โDo you really want to know?โ I asked.
Quinn nodded. โWhy do you think Iโm here?โ
I started with the 250 thousand I gave him, then told her about how I saved his company. Quinn just stared at me, totally stunned.
โHe likes you because he feels like he owes you?โ Quinn said, her voice full of disbelief. โSo if I help him out, heโll owe me, and maybe heโll fall for me too?โ
โIf thatโs what you think, then go ahead and help him,โ I replied, not really in the mood to explain further.
โYou said you gave him 250 thousand, but that money was from the Holcomb family, right? So technically, Iโve got a share in that favor too,โ Quinn said, her eyes gleaming with mischief. โThatโs my in! I can use that as my excuse to go see him. Iโm going to get a job at his companyโas his personal assistant.โ
I stared at Quinn in surprise. So sheโd already mapped out her whole plan.
โYouโre about to marry someone else, so youโd better stop trying to get close to him. Seriously, have some boundaries,โ Quinn tossed over her shoulder before strutting out.
