Chapter 757
โPeople should have boundaries. Funny, that used to be my line.โ
I turned to gaze out the window, my mind in turmoil.
Yeah, people really should have boundaries.
I stared at my computer for ages before I finally made up my mind. I decided to resign.

Jared Holcomb was my ex-husband, and heโd looked out for me a lot. Of course, Iโd also brought in some profits for the company, so I guess that makes us even.
Now that I was ready to move on to someone else, I figured it was time to make a clean break and keep my own life simple and drama-free.
Iโd already picked my successor. Ever since I got back from overseas, Iโd been intentionally delegating important tasks to him.
Right now, I was confident he could handle the job. Iโll admit, I was a bit selfish in picking him.
There was another female executive who was capable, but she was fake. I didnโt like her phony sweetness and flatteryโit always felt like empty bubbles to me. If I ever really needed her in the future, I doubt sheโd ever really have my back.
So, I chose another male executiveโsomeone reliable, with good character, and real drive.
Edward would be coming by tomorrow, so I had to discuss this with Jared today.
I had enough funds on hand to take some time off, and even if I wanted to start my own business down the line, Iโd be set.
I went to Jaredโs office and saw him in a meeting.
I waited in the lounge next door.
To my surprise, just two minutes later, Jared wrapped up the meeting and walked over to me.
He stood over me, his expression impossible to read.
I stood up, met his eyes, and handed him my resignation letter.
Jaredโs eyes flickered in disbelief. He looked up at me, then in the next second, tore my resignation letter in half and tossed it into the trash. โWhy are you going back on your word? Didnโt you say you wouldnโt quit? Were you just lying to me?โ
I knew heโd have feelings about this, but I kept calm. โJared, thank you for all the opportunities and experience youโve given me here, but from now on, I want to carve out my own path.โ
โI told you, I could always be your safety netโฆโ

โJared, what do you call this?โ I let out a small, bitter laugh. โThis is just an ambiguous relationship, not a safety net. Now that Iโve decided to be with Edward, I need to cut off all the ambiguity in my life.โ
โVictoria, are you really going to cut things off completely? Weโve known and loved each other for two lifetimesโฆโ
โHonestly, my life used to be a total mess, and thatโs why I need to take a step back. Maybe if I keep things simple between us, I can avoid a lot of drama.โ I met his gaze. โWeโve known each other for ages, Jared.โ
Jaredโs eyes turned a little red, and he gave a self-deprecating laugh. โYeah, weโve known each other so long that I thought if I just stuck around, youโd eventually come back. Guess I was just too full of myself.โ
โYouโve always been like that,โ I said.
Jared fell silent, staring up at the ceiling for a moment before nodding. โAlright, if you want to quit, Iโll let you go. So, whatโs next for you?โ
โWeโll see. Honestly, I donโt really know yet,โ I replied, a little dazed.
Jared turned around and picked up his desk phone, dialing HR.
โNo need to trouble them. Iโll just go down and get it myself,โ I said.
But Jared just sat on the couch, holding his face in his hands. I had no idea what was running through his mind.
Not long after, the HR assistant came by with a resignation form.
I thanked her, grabbed a pen, and started filling it out right there.
Jared took the pen from me, signed his name without hesitation, then said, โYour remaining salary and bonus will be credited to your account over the next few days.โ
โAlright, Iโll stay for another three days to make sure the transition goes smoothly,โ I said, getting up and heading out.
As soon as I got back to my office, Mariah sent me a few photos. The new school building was finished, looking grand and elegant.
As I looked at the bold blue letters on the building, a gentle warmth filled my heart.
