Chapter 755
As soon as I arrived at the parking lot, my phone buzzed with a call from Edward.
Iโd asked my assistant to drive, and as I sat in the back seat, my head felt a little fuzzy.
Edwardโs voice drifted in, like a gentle breeze in my ear. โAre you drunk?โ
โHow did you know Iโd been drinking?โ I asked, curious.
โDidnโt you go to Nathanโs company for the victory party?โ Edward replied, a hint of amusement in his tone.
โOh, you know about that too?โ I said, almost forgetting that Edward had also put money into the company, though he did it under his companyโs name.
โIโll be in Hachester the day after tomorrow,โ Edward said, his voice softening.
โWhy are you coming here?โ I blurted out, instantly realizing how pointless that question was.
Edward looked a little stunned too, then let out a helpless sigh. โWhat do you think?โ
โOh, right, weโre dating,โ I said, only just now realizing it myself.
Edward sighed. โHave you forgotten how dating works? You canโt really keep the spark alive when youโre miles apart.โ
โBut donโt you have work? Will coming to Hachester affect your job?โ I was thinking from his perspective, worried for him.
โNo, I can work from anywhere,โ Edward replied softly.
โAlright, then come visit. Iโll take you to Willow Bay and show you the sights around here,โ I said.
โOkay,โ Edward answered gently.
My assistant was still in the car, clearly eavesdropping, so I quickly ended the call.
She turned to me with a grin. โMs. Murphy, are you dating someone?โ
โYeah,โ I said, not bothering to hide it.
โHe must be really handsome, right?โ she asked, clearly curious.
โHeโs pretty good-looking,โ I said, picturing Edwardโs face in my mind. Heโs definitely got that something extraโway better than just average.
โIf heโs just โpretty good-looking,โ then he must have a killer career, right? Otherwise, thereโs no way heโd catch your eye, Ms. Murphy,โ she said with a mischievous grin, clearly trying to get the juicy details.
โAlright, quit being so nosy,โ I said, unable to hold back a laugh.
When I got home, I hopped in the shower and then got serious about my skincare routine. My soft, fair skin wasnโt just a gift from geneticsโkeeping it this way took real effort. Honestly, I wished the guy who loved me wasnโt shallow, but I had to admit, I cared about looks too. Guess that makes me just as bad.
It was the middle of the night.
I was already half-asleep when my phone suddenly started ringing.
Thinking it might be a work call, I fumbled for my phone and pressed it to my ear.
โVictoria, are you really getting married? He treats you well, doesnโt he?โ Nathanโs voice came through.
I snapped awake at the sound. It was Nathan. His voice was hoarse, probably from drinking and just waking up.
โYou were pretty drunk earlier. Are you feeling any better now?โ I asked, my voice soft with concern.
Nathanโs voice was tinged with sadness. โCan you tell me about you and him? Iโm justโฆ I just want to know, thatโs all.โ
I was stunnedโhe actually wanted to hear me talk about Edward. โIs he really asking about this?โ I thought, a little thrown off.
โYou two havenโt even known each other that long. When you met him, you were still with Ryan. Victoria, is it that the kind of slow, steady love I offer just doesnโt appeal to you? Do you only want something thrilling, something that gets your heart racing?โ Nathanโs voice was thick with frustration, like he was questioning his whole life.
โNathan, when it comes to feelings, I really donโt have a clear answer. Iโฆโ I started, but the words just faded away.
โIs it that Iโm just not enough? Or is it because Iโm the only one who really loves you, and you just feel sorry for me, so you give me a little bit of affection out of pity?โ Nathanโs voice was choked with emotionโI could hear him struggling to hold it together.
โIโm sorry,โ I said quietly, not knowing what else to say.
โI donโt need your apology. I just want to knowโwhat did I lose to him on? Is it because my career canโt compare to his, or my status isnโt as high?โ
