Chapter 755

As soon as I arrived at the parking lot, my phone buzzed with a call from Edward.

Iโ€™d asked my assistant to drive, and as I sat in the back seat, my head felt a little fuzzy.

Edwardโ€™s voice drifted in, like a gentle breeze in my ear. โ€œAre you drunk?โ€

โ€œHow did you know Iโ€™d been drinking?โ€ I asked, curious.

โ€œDidnโ€™t you go to Nathanโ€™s company for the victory party?โ€ Edward replied, a hint of amusement in his tone.

โ€œOh, you know about that too?โ€ I said, almost forgetting that Edward had also put money into the company, though he did it under his companyโ€™s name.

โ€œIโ€™ll be in Hachester the day after tomorrow,โ€ Edward said, his voice softening.

โ€œWhy are you coming here?โ€ I blurted out, instantly realizing how pointless that question was.

Edward looked a little stunned too, then let out a helpless sigh. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€

โ€œOh, right, weโ€™re dating,โ€ I said, only just now realizing it myself.

Edward sighed. โ€œHave you forgotten how dating works? You canโ€™t really keep the spark alive when youโ€™re miles apart.โ€

โ€œBut donโ€™t you have work? Will coming to Hachester affect your job?โ€ I was thinking from his perspective, worried for him.

โ€œNo, I can work from anywhere,โ€ Edward replied softly.

โ€œAlright, then come visit. Iโ€™ll take you to Willow Bay and show you the sights around here,โ€ I said.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Edward answered gently.

My assistant was still in the car, clearly eavesdropping, so I quickly ended the call.

She turned to me with a grin. โ€œMs. Murphy, are you dating someone?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, not bothering to hide it.

โ€œHe must be really handsome, right?โ€ she asked, clearly curious.

โ€œHeโ€™s pretty good-looking,โ€ I said, picturing Edwardโ€™s face in my mind. Heโ€™s definitely got that something extraโ€”way better than just average.

โ€œIf heโ€™s just โ€˜pretty good-looking,โ€™ then he must have a killer career, right? Otherwise, thereโ€™s no way heโ€™d catch your eye, Ms. Murphy,โ€ she said with a mischievous grin, clearly trying to get the juicy details.

โ€œAlright, quit being so nosy,โ€ I said, unable to hold back a laugh.

When I got home, I hopped in the shower and then got serious about my skincare routine. My soft, fair skin wasnโ€™t just a gift from geneticsโ€“keeping it this way took real effort. Honestly, I wished the guy who loved me wasnโ€™t shallow, but I had to admit, I cared about looks too. Guess that makes me just as bad.

It was the middle of the night.

I was already half-asleep when my phone suddenly started ringing.

Thinking it might be a work call, I fumbled for my phone and pressed it to my ear.

โ€œVictoria, are you really getting married? He treats you well, doesnโ€™t he?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice came through.

I snapped awake at the sound. It was Nathan. His voice was hoarse, probably from drinking and just waking up.

โ€œYou were pretty drunk earlier. Are you feeling any better now?โ€ I asked, my voice soft with concern.

Nathanโ€™s voice was tinged with sadness. โ€œCan you tell me about you and him? Iโ€™m justโ€ฆ I just want to know, thatโ€™s all.โ€

I was stunnedโ€“he actually wanted to hear me talk about Edward. โ€˜Is he really asking about this?โ€™ I thought, a little thrown off.

โ€œYou two havenโ€™t even known each other that long. When you met him, you were still with Ryan. Victoria, is it that the kind of slow, steady love I offer just doesnโ€™t appeal to you? Do you only want something thrilling, something that gets your heart racing?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice was thick with frustration, like he was questioning his whole life.

โ€œNathan, when it comes to feelings, I really donโ€™t have a clear answer. Iโ€ฆโ€ I started, but the words just faded away.

โ€œIs it that Iโ€™m just not enough? Or is it because Iโ€™m the only one who really loves you, and you just feel sorry for me, so you give me a little bit of affection out of pity?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice was choked with emotionโ€“I could hear him struggling to hold it together.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I said quietly, not knowing what else to say.

โ€œI donโ€™t need your apology. I just want to knowโ€“what did I lose to him on? Is it because my career canโ€™t compare to his, or my status isnโ€™t as high?โ€
