Chapter 650

When we started talking about work, Aidenโ€™s voice instantly perked up. โ€œSis, Iโ€™m heading to Aurelia for some advanced training in a few days. My company had a spot open, and I got probation. Everyoneโ€™s calling me the chosen one.โ€

I was stunned for a moment, tracing all the tangled threads in my mind. Suddenly, it made senseโ€”why Aiden was the golden child. It had to be Edward pulling strings. Because of our family ties, he made sure my brother got extra resources and opportunities at work.

โ€œTo achieve something big while Iโ€™m still young, just like Jared did,โ€ Aiden said, his voice full of admiration. Even after my divorce from Jared, Aiden never stopped seeing him as his idol.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, sis. Iโ€™m going to work really hard. My biggest dream..."

โ€œAlright, just keep studying hard and seize every chance you get,โ€ I reminded him gently.

โ€œI will, sis. Youโ€™re not worried Iโ€™m some hopeless romantic, are you? Like, Sophia could just cry in front of me and Iโ€™d take someone who shattered my heart back into her arms?โ€ Aiden gave a bitter laugh. โ€œNo way. Iโ€™m not letting that happen.โ€

โ€œGood. I know you can see people for who they really are. Guess I was just worrying too much,โ€ I said with a smile. Looks like my little brotherโ€™s finally grown up. I donโ€™t have to babysit him anymore.

I couldnโ€™t help but feel proud of him.

โ€œSis, make sure you take care of yourself while youโ€™re in the United Kingdom. If anything comes up, just talk to Jaredโ€“he is your boss, after all,โ€ Aiden said, clearly worried about me.

โ€œI will. Bye,โ€ I replied, gripping my phone tightly. I realized my eyes were already rimmed with red.

โ€˜Is this what it takes for everyone to grow upโ€“getting hurt, hitting rock bottom, and then clawing your way back?โ€™ I couldnโ€™t help but wonder.

More than ten uneventful days slipped by, and then, all of a sudden, Elaine stopped going out. She just curled up on the couch, glued to the TV, watching those British romance dramas.

I came home with a bag of fruit and caught her quickly wiping away tears before she greeted me. โ€œMs. Murphy, youโ€™re back.โ€

Thinking about how sheโ€™d been these past couple of days, I asked with concern, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Did something happen?โ€ Elaine leaned back on the couch, staring up at the ceiling, sounding all mopey and bitter. โ€œMy ex got back together with his ex. I couldnโ€™t reach him for days, so I went to his place. His parents said he went on a trip.โ€

I was stunned. โ€˜Seriously, what kind of move is that?โ€™ I thought to myself.

Elaine gave a self-deprecating laugh. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve known he was just chasing a bit of excitement, never the type to stick around for the long haul. I knew exactly what kind of guy he was, but I still fell for him again. Serves me right, I guess.โ€

Turns out, she just got dumped.

I sat down beside her and comforted her softly, โ€œIf you already knew how this would end, donโ€™t let it get you down. Just try to let it go and be a little more carefree about it.โ€

Elaine rested her chin in her hand, giving me a wry smile. โ€œMs. Murphy, can you really be that chill about things yourself?โ€

I chuckled. โ€œItโ€™s easy to give advice, but when itโ€™s my turnโ€ฆ I canโ€™t seem to take my own medicine.โ€

Elaine bit her lip and smiled, taking the orange Iโ€™d peeled and tossing a slice into her mouth. โ€œMs. Murphy, Iโ€™m alright. Just need a few days to get over the disappointment.โ€

โ€œBut you donโ€™t really seem okay,โ€ I said, knowing she was just putting on a brave face.

Elaineโ€™s eyes grew misty, and she suddenly leaned against my shoulder. โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™m really hurting. Can I buy you a drink? Thereโ€™s a bar just around the corner.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t drink, but Iโ€™ll keep you company,โ€ I said softly.

Elaine threw her arms around me. โ€œDeal, Ms. Murphy. If I were into girls, youโ€™d never be able to get away from me.โ€

She cracked me up. โ€œIs that so?โ€

Elaine looked at me with a dreamy, almost fangirl expression. โ€œAfter all this time living with you, I swear, youโ€™re the best. No matter how much of a mess I make, you always have the place spotless when I get back. When I drink too much and puke, you clean it up. When my stomach hurts in the middle of the night, you make me noodles. Seriously, how did Jared ever let you go? How could he even stand to?โ€

Hearing her say all that, I felt this sudden, inexplicable sadness well up inside me.

Guys donโ€™t really care how spotless the floor is or how delicious the food tastes. Sometimes, all it takes is some woman in a skimpy dress, half-heartedly waving a mop around in front of him, and heโ€™s completely obsessed.

Being the perfect, hardworking womanโ€“itโ€™s like a shackle, trapping a bunch of foolish girls who are just desperate for a little happiness.

I went to the bar with Elaine. The vibe was chill, not noisy at allโ€“everyone was just quietly catching up with friends in small groups.

Elaine kept knocking back drinks, one after another, like she was trying to drown her sorrows. Since I didnโ€™t have to drive, I had a couple glasses of red wine to take the edge off and help me relax.

When I got up to use the restroom, Elaine pointed at my phone on the table. โ€œMs. Murphy, your phoneโ€™s been going off nonstop. Maybe you should pick it up.โ€

I picked up my phone and glanced at the screen. The name โ€œFoxโ€ popped up.
