Chapter 650
When we started talking about work, Aidenโs voice instantly perked up. โSis, Iโm heading to Aurelia for some advanced training in a few days. My company had a spot open, and I got probation. Everyoneโs calling me the chosen one.โ
I was stunned for a moment, tracing all the tangled threads in my mind. Suddenly, it made senseโwhy Aiden was the golden child. It had to be Edward pulling strings. Because of our family ties, he made sure my brother got extra resources and opportunities at work.
โTo achieve something big while Iโm still young, just like Jared did,โ Aiden said, his voice full of admiration. Even after my divorce from Jared, Aiden never stopped seeing him as his idol.
โDonโt worry, sis. Iโm going to work really hard. My biggest dream..."
โAlright, just keep studying hard and seize every chance you get,โ I reminded him gently.
โI will, sis. Youโre not worried Iโm some hopeless romantic, are you? Like, Sophia could just cry in front of me and Iโd take someone who shattered my heart back into her arms?โ Aiden gave a bitter laugh. โNo way. Iโm not letting that happen.โ
โGood. I know you can see people for who they really are. Guess I was just worrying too much,โ I said with a smile. Looks like my little brotherโs finally grown up. I donโt have to babysit him anymore.
I couldnโt help but feel proud of him.
โSis, make sure you take care of yourself while youโre in the United Kingdom. If anything comes up, just talk to Jaredโhe is your boss, after all,โ Aiden said, clearly worried about me.
โI will. Bye,โ I replied, gripping my phone tightly. I realized my eyes were already rimmed with red.
โIs this what it takes for everyone to grow upโgetting hurt, hitting rock bottom, and then clawing your way back?โ I couldnโt help but wonder.
More than ten uneventful days slipped by, and then, all of a sudden, Elaine stopped going out. She just curled up on the couch, glued to the TV, watching those British romance dramas.
I came home with a bag of fruit and caught her quickly wiping away tears before she greeted me. โMs. Murphy, youโre back.โ
Thinking about how sheโd been these past couple of days, I asked with concern, โWhatโs wrong? Did something happen?โ Elaine leaned back on the couch, staring up at the ceiling, sounding all mopey and bitter. โMy ex got back together with his ex. I couldnโt reach him for days, so I went to his place. His parents said he went on a trip.โ
I was stunned. โSeriously, what kind of move is that?โ I thought to myself.
Elaine gave a self-deprecating laugh. โI shouldโve known he was just chasing a bit of excitement, never the type to stick around for the long haul. I knew exactly what kind of guy he was, but I still fell for him again. Serves me right, I guess.โ
Turns out, she just got dumped.
I sat down beside her and comforted her softly, โIf you already knew how this would end, donโt let it get you down. Just try to let it go and be a little more carefree about it.โ
Elaine rested her chin in her hand, giving me a wry smile. โMs. Murphy, can you really be that chill about things yourself?โ
I chuckled. โItโs easy to give advice, but when itโs my turnโฆ I canโt seem to take my own medicine.โ
Elaine bit her lip and smiled, taking the orange Iโd peeled and tossing a slice into her mouth. โMs. Murphy, Iโm alright. Just need a few days to get over the disappointment.โ
โBut you donโt really seem okay,โ I said, knowing she was just putting on a brave face.
Elaineโs eyes grew misty, and she suddenly leaned against my shoulder. โHonestly, Iโm really hurting. Can I buy you a drink? Thereโs a bar just around the corner.โ
โI donโt drink, but Iโll keep you company,โ I said softly.
Elaine threw her arms around me. โDeal, Ms. Murphy. If I were into girls, youโd never be able to get away from me.โ
She cracked me up. โIs that so?โ
Elaine looked at me with a dreamy, almost fangirl expression. โAfter all this time living with you, I swear, youโre the best. No matter how much of a mess I make, you always have the place spotless when I get back. When I drink too much and puke, you clean it up. When my stomach hurts in the middle of the night, you make me noodles. Seriously, how did Jared ever let you go? How could he even stand to?โ
Hearing her say all that, I felt this sudden, inexplicable sadness well up inside me.
Guys donโt really care how spotless the floor is or how delicious the food tastes. Sometimes, all it takes is some woman in a skimpy dress, half-heartedly waving a mop around in front of him, and heโs completely obsessed.
Being the perfect, hardworking womanโitโs like a shackle, trapping a bunch of foolish girls who are just desperate for a little happiness.
I went to the bar with Elaine. The vibe was chill, not noisy at allโeveryone was just quietly catching up with friends in small groups.
Elaine kept knocking back drinks, one after another, like she was trying to drown her sorrows. Since I didnโt have to drive, I had a couple glasses of red wine to take the edge off and help me relax.
When I got up to use the restroom, Elaine pointed at my phone on the table. โMs. Murphy, your phoneโs been going off nonstop. Maybe you should pick it up.โ
I picked up my phone and glanced at the screen. The name โFoxโ popped up.
