Chapter 651

Elaine clearly noticed it too. She squinted her tipsy eyes at me, teasing, โ€œMs. Murphy, is there a fox chasing after you? What kind of wolf is itโ€”the biting kind, the devouring kind, or the protective kind?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re drunk. Just a client, thatโ€™s all,โ€ I replied, trying to keep my cool.

Elaine blinked in surprise. โ€œCalling a client a fox is kind of weird.โ€

I gave a faint smile. โ€œNothing weird about it. Some clients are tougher to handle than any fox.โ€

Elaine immediately nodded in agreement. โ€œTotally. The ones Iโ€™ve run into are even tougher than foxesโ€”theyโ€™re basically bears.โ€

On the outside, I kept my cool, but my heart was pounding. โ€˜Edwardโ€™s back in the United Kingdom?โ€™

Just then, my phone started ringing again. I ignored it, but Elaine snatched it up and turned it off. โ€œSeriously, what time is it? Do they have any manners? Who calls someone about business in the middle of the night? Ms. Murphy, you let them get away with too much. If it were me, Iโ€™d have cursed them out already,โ€ she snapped.

I had no idea what to say.

It was not that I let him get away with too much; itโ€™s just one of Edwardโ€™s annoying habitsโ€”he always liked to call me in the middle of the night.

I was still debating how to dodge the call, but Elaineโ€™s move was quick and solved the problem. With that, I didnโ€™t have to be in a dilemma anymore.

It was almost midnight, and to be safe, I figured Iโ€™d better get Elaine home.

Elaine could really hold her liquor. Even after all those drinks, she was still surprisingly sober.

On the way, she wouldnโ€™t stop telling me about all the romantic stuff her ex did. Elaine said, โ€œSkiingโ€ฆ yeah, he taught me how to ski. Andโ€ฆ he even promised to take me on a cruiseโ€ฆโ€

She just kept talking, and I quietly listened, helping her downstairs to her apartment.

A black Rolls-Royce sat silently at the entrance of the apartment building, its headlights cutting through the faint mist. The beams landed right across the path we needed to take to get home.

As soon as I looked up and spotted the car, my heart started thudding in my chest.

โ€œSeriously, who parks with their headlights on? Itโ€™s hurting my eyes,โ€ Elaine grumbled, clearly annoyed.

I quickly steered her to the side, making sure the headlights wouldnโ€™t shine in her face.

As I walked past the car, the back window slid down.

Edwardโ€™s authoritative, striking face appeared under the dim streetlights, his expression aloof and untouchable. He fixed his gaze on me, giving me that look that said Iโ€™d crossed the line by ignoring his calls and even shutting off my phone.

I shot him a quick glance, but Elaine was already clinging to my arm, groaning that she felt sick and needed to get upstairs. I didnโ€™t even bother with Edwardโ€”just hurried Elaine inside the apartment.

Elaine hunched over the toilet, throwing up for quite a while. Then she shrugged off her coat, sprawled out on the bed, and fell asleep immediately.

Watching her, it struck me that everyone has to taste the bitterness of love sooner or later.

I gently closed the door and turned to go downstairs.

Downstairs, Edwardโ€™s car was still parked quietly, the engine off.

Not far away, someone was crouched down, smokingโ€”a guy who looked like his driver.

I stood by the car door, and Edward opened it, his voice low. โ€œGet in.โ€

I bent down and got inside. Edward said, โ€œStill out drinking this late?โ€

I hesitated for a moment, guessing he mustโ€™ve smelled the alcohol on me.

โ€œMy roommate was feeling down, so I went with her to cheer her up,โ€ I explained.

โ€œIโ€™m not feeling great either. Can you keep me company?โ€ Edward asked softly.

I shot him a confused look. โ€œWhatโ€™s up with you? You donโ€™t look like anythingโ€™s wrong.โ€

Edward fell silent, staring out the window. โ€œDo you know what my dad said to me at Ryanโ€™s wedding?โ€

My heart skipped a beat, but I quickly played it cool. โ€œIs that something Iโ€™m allowed to ask?โ€
