Chapter 606
"That's indeed my wish, too," Lawrence nodded. "However, it seems your wife has rejected me."
The crowd buzzed with anticipation. Lily's ignorance of Lawrence's identity was evident, but they assumed Alexander understood his influence. No matter La Beautรฉ Group's power and wealth, they wouldn't openly offend Lawrence.
However, the unexpected occurred.
"That's right!" Alexander's forceful declaration silenced the onlookers. The sheer volume reverberated in their ears. His tone, as much as his words, startled them. A collective thought arose: 'What did he say? That's right?' Confusion reigned. Did he condone his fiancรฉe's public rejection, a blatant disrespect? Was he acting rationally?
Lawrence's expression remained unchanged, save for a subtle twitch at the corner of his eye.
"Mr. Adler," he began, "your reclusive nature likely obscures my wife's preferences. She enjoys fragrance research and experimentation. However, she dislikes societal obligations and rigid regulations." He waved a hand for emphasis. "She simply cannot participate. Therefore, she's not rejecting you, but the demands of the society and its events."
Lily, silent since Alexander's arrival, felt his words were persuasive. He understands these people better, she thought. Earlier, she'd intended to own her rejection of Lawrence; his pride and image were inconsequential compared to her own preferences. Yet, Alexander deftly resolved the conflict. I rejected not him, but the rules and events! she realized.
"You seem to have social anxiety," Noah observed. "Many perfumers do. It improves with time in the Perfumers' Society. We share a common profession and language. As for the rules and regulationsโฆ"
"Mr. Richards," Alexander interrupted, "are you planning to abolish decades of established societal rules for my wife? Unlessโฆ I didn't realize you'd become president. Congratulations."
Noah was speechless, his fists clenching at his sides to contain his anger.
"In that case, forget it," Lawrence finally said. He sighed, looking at Lily. "You're talented. I merely wished to provide a better environment for you. If you change your mind, contact me anytime."
He turned to a subordinate, who presented Lily with a business card. "My number is on it." Then, he departed, his entourage following suit.
Alexander, arm around Lily's waist, watched them go. Once the car disappeared, he turned to her. "Aren't I amazing?"
Lily remained speechless.
"Don't you think you should reward me for being so amazing?" He leaned in, his request unabashed.
