Chapter 59
Lilyโs tablet displayed a Twitter feed showing breaking news. She recognized a prominent vlogger often featured in entertainment news.
She laughed sarcastically. "I never expected Mr. Russell to be interested in gossip," she said. Alexander looked at her without replying. Lily felt uneasy. Returning to the screen, she saw the news was about her.
The article focused on her college years and subsequent career, though it didn't mention her name. It detailed her relationships with Nathaniel and Melanie. The sensational headline read: 'Happy Hour With the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.'
Lily was stunned, more surprised than angry. She hadn't anticipated Nathaniel's actions, believing his previous slander to be his limit. She was unaware he possessed further tricks. His usual tactic was to seize information and sue; this time, he even denied their past romantic involvement. Or perhaps they'd never had any significant feelings for each otherโotherwise, how could this have happened?
After a moment, Lily turned to Alexander. "Do you believe it?"
Regardless of others' opinions or Nathaniel's slander, Alexander's feelings mattered most.
His expression remained unchanged. He blinked. "What?"
"I told you, it's boring stuff," he said, switching off the tablet and pulling her into his arms. He pinched her nose. "Angry?"
Lily shook her head, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her head on his shoulder. His presence offered security.
How could she have asked such a silly question? His calm demeanor and dismissal of the news as "boring" indicated his unwavering trust. It felt both strange and reassuring.
The more time she spent with him, the clearer her understanding of a good man became, and the more she dismissed someone like Nathaniel.
"You said it's boring stuff. Why would I be angry about boring stuff?" she said sullenly, leaning against him.
"Okay, that's good," Alexander replied, stroking her hair.
He asked casually, "Did you skip work on your first day? Were you unhappy? Did someone give you a hard time?"
"No. The manager was very considerate. She gave me three days off to settle personal matters and adapt. She's incredibly generous," Lily said, clapping her hands.
"Really?" Alexander looked at her sideways, questioning her.
"Such a considerate manager. I'll need to investigate her," he said seriously, not joking.
