Chapter 796: Secrets Behind This Gem

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Cynthia froze, clearly rattled by the Alpha aura Iโ€™d accidentally let loose. She stared at me with fear.

I warned her, โ€œI canโ€™t stand people like youโ€”just waiting around like the world owes you something. Sure, itโ€™s all fine if your mentorโ€™s still alive and comes back after sorting herself out. But what if something bad happened to her? What if sheโ€™s gone for good? Howโ€™s she supposed to find you then? Float over as a ghost?โ€

โ€œWhat are you saying? Did something happen to my mentor? Something did happen, right? Just tell me! Whatโ€™s going on?โ€ Cynthia freaked out, clutching my hand and throwing question after question at me.

โ€œQuiet!โ€ I shouted, and that shut her up quickly.

โ€œIn the past two years, our wolf clan has lost many physical scientists. Your mentorโ€™s second husband is one of them. I suspect that sheโ€™s also wrapped up in all this.โ€

Cynthia fell silent, deep in her thoughts.

I lightly placed a hand on her shoulder. โ€œYou want to find Rosalie, and so do I. But between the two of us, who do you think has a better shot?โ€

She looked down, defeated. โ€œYou.โ€

โ€œThe plane is almost on the ground,โ€ I said. โ€œYouโ€™ve got five minutes to make a choice. You can go back to waiting for nothing or come with me and help out. We might find her faster together.โ€

I gave her shoulder a quick pat and moved away.

โ€œNo need to think. Iโ€™m in,โ€ she said firmly. โ€œI trust you can find her.โ€

That surprised me. โ€œYou trust me that easily?โ€

She nodded. โ€œMy mentor trusted you. Thatโ€™s enough for me.โ€

I smiled and didnโ€™t say anything else.

Once we landed, I handed Cynthia off to Humbert. โ€œHandle all the arrangements for her. Iโ€™ll keep the rare sapphire with me. Donโ€™t stress about it.โ€

Then, I added, โ€œReopen the business just like we planned. I want Byrd Jewelry to shine next month at the Winterbite Packโ€™s jewelry exhibition.โ€

There was only a month left. All the big-name jewelry brands would be showing off their best stuff there. If I could track down Rosalie, maybe Iโ€™d uncover more clues about her husbandโ€™s disappearance. Of course, that was assuming she wasnโ€™t missing. Whether HB Jewelry could break into the market came down to how we did at that exhibition.

After I said goodbye to Humbert and Cynthia, I made sure no one around recognized me. Then, I let Hera take over and made a wild run for the hotel.

I grabbed something to eat and then opened the safe.

Inside, the rare sapphire sat quietly. It was perfect, like it was made by divine hands.

I couldnโ€™t help but reach out and trace its smooth surface.

It was the second one Iโ€™d found this month.

Normally, this type of stone had more of a bluish-green color. Pure blue ones were extremely rare, and the color shift usually came from unusual material changes.

My best guess? Radiation.

Wherever those gemstones came from, the place mustโ€™ve been hit with some kind of radiation that no one had talked about yet. That was probably what changed the usual bluish-green gems into that insanely clear blue.

The only reason I even managed to track down two rare sapphires at the rock betting auction was thanks to Hera. Her sense of smell was ridiculously sharp, way beyond what a normal Alpha could do. She could pick up the strange scent that radiation left behind.

There was no way any normal pack would let radiation hang aroundโ€”not unless it was something low-key, unofficial, and probably run by someone shady, like a black market setup.

The first thing I thought of was those missing physical scientists. What if those perfect sapphires were made by them?

Still, I didnโ€™t get it. Why mess with radiation just to make rare sapphires?

Yet again, everything seemed to tie back to those vanished scientists.

Unconsciously, I pressed my fingers to the sapphire, deep in thought.

This sapphire had to have something to do with those scientists. Maybe I could even find the truth about Grandma and Benjaminโ€™s poisoning case. I had to get to the bottom of it.
