Alpha Hayleyโs Destined Mate
Chapter 636: Vigilant
Benjaminโs POV:
I raised an eyebrow at Hayley, who only gave a slight shrug, offering me a small smile and a shake of her head. Letting out a quiet sigh, I followed her outside.
Peter was leaning against the stone pillar at the entrance of the Carsonsโ estate. As I approached, he spoke without even glancing my way, โGot a smoke?โ
Since my fallout with Odessa, I always carried cigarettes with me. I pulled one out of my pocket and handed it to him, along with my lighter, without hesitation.
Peter quickly lit it, took a long drag, and exhaled the smoke. He studied me closely, his eyes vigilant as he spoke. โDo you really care about my sister?โ
โI love her,โ I replied without a second thought. โI consider her my destined mate.โ
Peter stared at me for a long moment, then slowly lowered his gaze. โYou know Iโve died once, right?โ he said in a low voice.
โIf you hurt her, Iโll kill you, no matter who you areโAlpha or not,โ he added, his voice cold, with a dangerous edge. He lifted his eyes again, glaring at me with those bloodshot, wolf-like eyes. โI donโt joke about this kind of thing.โ
I smiled calmly at him. โYou probably wonโt get the chance.โ
Peter held my gaze for a while longer before flicking the cigarette to the ground and crushing it with his foot. โLetโs hope so,โ he muttered, his voice low and threatening.
With that, he stuffed the cigarette and lighter into his pocket and turned to walk away. I stayed still, watching him until he disappeared around the corner, before I turned and walked back thoughtfully.
In the yard, Virginia was engaged in a conversation with Dorothy. I moved toward Hayley and stood next to her.
I had begun to notice how Lawrence always seemed so cheerful around her. After observing it more often, I finally realized the truthโshe was my destined mate. She must have her reasons for keeping some things from me, but I was more than willing to wait for her to share them when she was ready.
โWhat were you two talking about?โ Hayley asked softly.
โYour brother said he wants to kill me,โ I said with a wry smile, trying to lighten the mood.
Hayley looked at me, surprised. โDo you guys have a history?โ
โNo,โ I replied casually, smiling. โBut we do now.โ
I understood. To a brother, no brother-in-law was ever good enough, even if that brother-in-law happened to be an Alpha.
โI donโt get it,โ she said, narrowing her eyes at me. She raised a finger and poked me firmly in the chest. โStop being vagueโspit it out.โ
I gently took her finger in my hand and held it there. โTo put it simply, if I betray you, Iโll be as good as dead.โ
Hayley grinned playfully. โWell, yeah, if you start messing around with other women, Iโll chop your dick off!โ
I leaned in teasingly. โIโm sure you wouldnโt joke about your happiness in the bedroom.โ
Hayley quickly pulled her hand back and covered my mouth with it, giving me a fierce glare. I couldnโt help but laugh. Her expression was absolutely adorable.
That evening, the group all moved into the large villa provided by the Sanders. Though it wasnโt as grand as the Carsonsโ estate in the Shadow Pack, it was certainly much larger than Hayleyโs previous home. Beta warriors stood guard at the entrance for extra security.
The Carsonsโ place was bustling with activity over the move, while the Sandersโ estate remained quiet, with only Freya and Alan present. Alanโs expression was indifferent, clearly uninterested in the commotion around him. Freya, ever the attentive hostess, made him a cup of coffee. โDad, these are new coffee beans. Try them,โ she said cheerfully.
โThanks,โ Alan responded, accepting the cup and taking a sip before setting it down on the table beside him.
Freya took a sip of her own coffee and casually remarked, โHayley really is something. She didnโt even think to come back and spend more time with you, even after just getting out of the hospital.โ
โSheโs used to her freedom out there. Let her be,โ Alan replied, his face unreadable, his thoughts a mystery.
After a brief silence, Alan spoke again, his gaze turning to Freya. โYouโre 25 now, right?โ
โYes, Dad. In two months, Iโll be 25.โ Freya smiled sweetly. โYou remember my birthday?โ
โOf course. Youโre my daughter. How could I forget?โ
Alanโs tone remained neutral as he continued, โSince youโve already chosen your mate, why not set a date for your and Danielโs wedding? After that, youโll help him manage the Ortegas. Youโre capable, and their family isnโt doing well as they used to. They need you more than we do.โ
Freyaโs smile slowly faded as she processed her fatherโs words. Behind her back, her hand subtly shifted into a sharp, dangerous wolf claw.
