Chapter 786
Teresa shook her head. โDonโt worry. Jonathan helped out. He gave Jennifer false information and didnโt tell her the real test results.โ
Evelyn finally let out a sigh of relief. She understood Teresaโs good intentions. She said, โI know itโs not right to lie, but this is a white lie. If Hannah finds out that Peggy is her real mother, sheโll definitely be devastated and do something stupid.
โI know Hannah very well. We have to wait until sheโs completely over Peggy. Maybe after some time, sheโll be able to accept it.โ
Teresa nodded. She thought, โHopefully, after some time, Jennifer will be able to accept the truth.โ
Suddenly, a dull thud came from outside the door. Teresa froze for a moment. โWhat was that sound?โ she asked.
โDid you hear something?โ Evelyn asked. She didnโt hear anything.
But Teresa, ever alert, had definitely caught the noise from just outside the door. She slipped her hand out of Evelynโs and stepped out to take a look.
There was no one outside. Teresa wondered, โDid I hear it wrong?โ
Just as she was about to turn back into the room, she spotted a fruit basket sitting on the floor. She froze. She thought, โSo there really was someone out here just now! Who could it have been?โ
She stopped a nurse passing by and asked her. The nurse pointed down the hallway and said, โI just saw a woman with long hair run off, covering her mouth. She was wearing white and looked really skinny.โ
Teresa thought, โLong hair, skinny, and she ran off covering her mouth? Could it beโฆโ
A sudden sense of foreboding hit Teresa. The first thing she did was call Miriam. Teresa wondered, โDid Miriam come to see Lucas? After all, Miriam had mentioned just last night that if she got the chance, she wanted to meet her own brother.โ
However, Miriam denied it right away. She said she hadnโt been to the hospital at all. She and Edward were having fun with Michael.
Teresa hung up, and her sense of foreboding only deepened. She thought, โCould it beโฆ Jennifer?! Butโฆ Wasnโt she supposed to have gone back to Nareigh?โ
She hurried to the security office, asking to check the surveillance footage.
Meanwhile, at the airport, Jennifer, with tears in her eyes, hurriedly boarded her flight. After finding out she wasnโt Peggyโs daughter yesterday, Jennifer had spent the whole night awake, lost in thought.
She thought about all the mistakes she had made in the past. She wondered if she was so lucky that she still had a glimmer of hope in her life.
She remembered how Evelyn had held her hand, telling her that no matter what happened, she would always be her first child. But Jennifer had just pulled her hand away impatiently, telling her to stop pretending to care.
She hadnโt missed the white hairs on Evelynโs head and the pained look on Evelynโs face. A wave of guilt washed over her. She shouldnโt have treated Evelyn like that.
After spending a sleepless, lonely night at home, Jennifer booked an early morning flight to Jarisburg. She used the excuse of visiting Lucas as a reason, but deep down, she just wanted to apologize to Evelyn.
But she didnโt expect that she would end up overhearing Evelyn and Teresaโs conversation. After the paternity test results came out yesterday, the police called her again, but she refused to answer.
She couldnโt even say what exactly she was afraid of. Maybe the call was about Peggy.
She didnโt want to think about things like why she looked so much like Peggy, or how she even shared blood with Teresa, yet the test results said she wasnโt Peggyโs daughter. She didnโt wanna know if there was something fishy going on.
She didnโt dare to think about it any further. She had believed that phone call โ the one that said she wasnโt really Peggyโs daughter. But now, the last string holding her together finally snapped.
