Chapter 785

โ€œIs that so?โ€ Jenniferโ€™s nails bit into her palms, knuckles white. โ€œWhatโ€™s the result?โ€ Her voice was a fragile thread, barely audible. โ€˜Please, not her. Please, anyone but her.โ€™

โ€œOur laboratory analysis confirms no biological relationship exists between you and Peggy Davis,โ€ the voice stated professionally.

Tears tracked freely down Jenniferโ€™s cheeks. โ€œIโ€™m not? Not Peggyโ€™s? Are you sure?โ€ Disbelief warred with desperate hope in her trembling voice.

โ€œYes,โ€ the doctor confirmed.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Jennifer choked out, clutching the phone like a lifeline. โ€œThank you so much. Thank you.โ€ Relief washed over her.

The line went dead. Hiccups of laughter tangled with her sobs. โ€˜Iโ€™m not her daughter!โ€™ The thought was a giddy rush, a reprieve snatched from the jaws of despair.

Meanwhile, in Jarisburg, Jonathan handed Teresa the unaltered DNA report. โ€œItโ€™s done. The lab called her with the fabricated negative result. Sheโ€™s in the dark for now.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Teresa murmured; her eyes fixed on the damning numbers on the paper: 99.999% probability of maternity between Peggy Davis and Jennifer Nelson.

Jonathanโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œSheโ€™ll discover the truth eventually, Teresa. And when that happens, expect anger, blame, she wonโ€™t appreciate what youโ€™ve done for her.โ€

Teresa met his gaze. โ€œThen we deal with it then. But right now? Knowing the truth would kill her. Literally. I know her.โ€

Jonathan rubbed his temples, a sigh escaping him. โ€œFine. Your call. If you believe itโ€™s worth the fallout, Iโ€™ll stand by it.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Teresa murmured, already turning. โ€œI need to check on Lucas.โ€

Jonathan caught her wrist. โ€œIf thereโ€™s any news about your brother, Iโ€™ll let you know right away. What you need to do now is get some rest. Youโ€™re pregnant. You canโ€™t keep wearing yourself out like this.โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ She moved to sidestep him.

Jonathan took in her weary frame. He stepped decisively into her path. โ€œAre you trying to drive me mad?โ€ The frustration was raw.

โ€œI swear on everything, I will keep your family safe. Every single person. Now, for the love of God, rest. Or do you want me to carry you to your room?โ€

Teresa lowered her head. โ€œSorryโ€ฆโ€ The apology was a whisper. She knew she was unraveling. The weight of it allโ€“her fractured family, the lies, the fearโ€“felt crushing.

Jonathan sighed, the anger dissipating as quickly as it flared. He gently guided her by the elbow back towards the bedroom. โ€œSleep. Iโ€™ve got this. All of it.โ€

This time, Teresa didnโ€™t resist. A weary sigh escaped her. โ€œOnce Lucas wakes, I want to go back to Nareigh.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Jonathan said as his phone started buzzing. โ€œIโ€™ll go pick someone up. You just get some rest.โ€

Teresa watched him go. She had too much on her mind to fall asleep.

Minutes later, Miriam appeared. Teresa was stunned. โ€˜Miriam is supposed to be in Nareigh. How did she get here?โ€™ Teresa wondered to herself.

Edward was right behind Miriam. He gave Teresa a quick greeting before heading out.

โ€œMiriam?โ€ Teresa breathed, still disbelieving. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

Miriam rushed forward, grabbing Teresaโ€™s hand. โ€œI heard about what happened to your family. I was frantic. Jonathanโ€“he sent tickets. For me and Edward. We jumped on the first flight.โ€

Teresaโ€™s eyes welled up. Jonathan. He brought them.โ€˜ She forced a wobbly smile. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to come all this way. Really. Iโ€™m managing.โ€

Miriam cupped Teresaโ€™s face, thumbing away a stray tear. โ€œTeresa,โ€ her voice softened with empathy. โ€œHow could you be okay? Jennifer isnโ€™t your sister, your mom is fighting a lawsuit, and your brother is still unconscious.

โ€œI know you. This weight? Itโ€™s crushing you. So cry. Just cry, Teresa. Iโ€™m here.โ€

Teresa buried her face against Miriamโ€™s shoulder, the dam finally breaking as silent sobs shook her frame, her tears soaking Miriamโ€™s shoulder.

Miriam held her close, rubbing her back. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry I wasnโ€™t here sooner. I shouldโ€™ve been.โ€

โ€œNo, really.โ€ Teresa insisted, โ€œIโ€™m okay.โ€

โ€œTeresa,โ€ Miriam soothed. โ€œLet it out. It will get better. Youโ€™ve found your brother now. That means something. Youโ€™re both good souls. Good souls find their way through.โ€

Held securely in her best friendโ€™s arms, Teresa finally surrendered to the storm of grief sheโ€™d been holding back.

Miriam held Teresaโ€™s hand, patting her back gently.

Teresa let out a small laugh. โ€œIโ€™m not a little kid, you know. Are you settling me down to sleep?โ€

Miriam laughed softly, settling beside her and pulling her close. โ€œRemember dorm life? You top bunk, me bottom. Half the nights I couldnโ€™t sleep, Iโ€™d shimmy up that ladder and sneak into your cocoon.โ€

Teresa nodded, a faint, nostalgic smile touching her lips. โ€œSimpler times. No worries weighed us down. Just young.โ€

โ€œWe are still young,โ€ Miriam insisted, giving her a gentle squeeze. โ€œAnd no matter what life throws? This?โ€ She gestured between them. โ€œUnbreakable. Iโ€™m your anchor. Always.โ€

โ€œThank you, Miriam,โ€ Teresa said.

With Miriam there beside her, Teresa was finally able to sleep soundly for once.

The next day, Teresa returned to the hospital, finding Evelyn already keeping vigil beside Lucasโ€™s still form.

Lucas remained unchangedโ€“no flicker of consciousness. The doctor reiterated: prolonged, extreme stress had triggered a deep self-preservation mode in his brain. Awakening now depended entirely on Lucas himself.

โ€œKeep talking to him,โ€ the doctor advised. โ€œReassure him. Encourage him. Let him feel your presence. It can make a difference.โ€

Evelyn murmured her thanks.

Teresa stared at Lucasโ€™s still face, the doctorโ€™s words echoing. โ€˜So itโ€™s not that he canโ€™t wake up, he just doesnโ€™t want to,โ€™ she thought. โ€œYeah, reality is agony. His dreams must be his only refuge now.โ€™

Evelyn squeezed Teresaโ€™s hand. โ€œGet some real rest. Iโ€™ll stay.โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œLook at you, Mom. Youโ€™re exhausted. Look at your hairโ€“new strands of gray every time I blink.โ€

Evelyn managed a tired, sad smile. โ€œAs long as youโ€™re all happy, itโ€™s worth it. But Lucasโ€ฆโ€ Her voice cracked, fresh tears tracing paths down her cheeks. โ€œHeโ€™s endured too much. Far too much.โ€

Teresa gently brushed the tears away. โ€œPlease, donโ€™t cry. It hurts your eyes. You know that.โ€

Evelyn nodded, composing herself with a shaky breath. โ€œAnd Jennifer? Does she know the truth?โ€
