Chapter 755
Jonathan sighed, feeling a bit sad. โDo you really think Iโd do that? Iโd never send people to hurt a woman. And I never went to the media. After thinking it through, I figured it was enough that she quit.โ
Teresaโs frown eased a little, and she nodded. โSheโs already quit, so letโs just leave it at that. Iโm going to use the restroom real quick.โ
Jonathan watched Teresa leave, noticing something off about her gait. When she came back, she was frowning and didnโt dare to lean back against the sofa cushion.
โWhatโs wrong with your back?โ Jonathan asked sharply, picking up on her discomfort.
โItโs fine,โ Teresa said.
โIf itโs nothing, then why are you afraid to lean back? Let me take a look,โ Jonathan said, reaching out to gently touch her back.
Teresa immediately cried out in pain. After he pressed her for answers, she finally admitted that sheโd taken a couple of hits while trying to shield Jennifer during the scuffle.
โAre you out of your mind? Youโre pregnant, and you still threw yourself in front of her to take the hits?โ Jonathan snapped.
โI just used my back. Itโs really nothing. Donโt make such a fuss,โ Teresa replied, brushing it off.
Jonathan was about to lose it, scolding her through gritted teeth. โTake off your top. Let me see.โ
โYou donโt have to worry. Iโm really fine. I promise Iโll keep our baby safe,โ Teresa insisted.
He couldnโt care less about the baby right now. โDidnโt you hear me? Take it off now,โ Jonathan said, already pulling off her jacket and then her camisole.
When he saw the two dark bruises on her back, Jonathanโs frown deepened. โDid you call the police? Any idea who those people were?โ
Teresa explained, โYeah, I called the police. It was a bunch of old ladies. Totally uncivilized. They claimed theyโd escaped from a mental hospital, but I didnโt buy it.
โIt really felt like someone asked them to attack Jennifer on purpose. The police told us to just wait for updates.โ
Jonathan didnโt say a word. He made a call, telling his secretary to bring in some ointment right away.
Then he looked at Teresa. โNext time, can you not be so reckless? Before you go protecting someone else, think about what you can actually handle. Remember, youโre pregnant.โ
Teresa frowned. She never liked being lectured. โI know.โ
When there was a knock at the door, Jonathan stepped out to get the ointment.
After coming back in and closing the door behind him, he gently applied the ointment to Teresaโs back, reminding her, โWait for it to dry a bit before you put your clothes back on, okay?โ
When it was done, Teresa said, โIโll head back first.โ
Jonathan quickly caught her wrist. โHold on. Letโs go together. Iโm almost done here.โ Then his phone started ringing. He glanced at the caller ID. It was Donald. Without hesitation, he answered right in front of Teresa.
On the other end, Donaldโs voice sounded exhausted as he told Jonathan that Jennifer had officially quit her job at the hospital that day.
โGot it,โ Jonathan said. โLetโs call it done. I wonโt pursue anything over the fake DNA test. From now on, whatever happens at work, you two deal with it yourselves. Donโt drag me into it again.โ With that, he hung up.
Teresa overheard Jonathanโs words and realized he was just as exhausted by it all. โItโs time to let things be between Jennifer and Donald,โ she thought to herself.
When they returned to Rosary Estates, the babysitter saw Teresa and Jonathan come in, let them know that dinner was ready, and quietly took her leave.
Michael only got up after his nap and started chattering away, full of energy.
At the dinner table, Jonathan and Teresa took turns answering his endless questions, both making sure not to spoil their sonโs good mood.
Teresa was getting ready to turn in for the night. These days, Jonathan was the one in charge of getting Michael to bed, so she finally had it easy.
Teresa had just finished her shower and was toweling off her hair as she stepped out of the bathroom, only to find Jonathan already sitting on her bed, waiting for her.
