“Have you really thought about what would happen if you told them?” Teresa said anxiously. “Your grandpa would definitely try to push us to remarry, and as for your mom…”
“I have no idea what she’d think. She might even want me to end the pregnancy. I honestly don’t know what she’d do.”
“She wouldn’t,” Jonathan said with a hint of exasperation. “Trust me. As long as I’m here, no one will dare lay a finger on you.”
“Still, I just can’t trust Irene,” Teresa replied, shaking her head. “With Mike, I was already pregnant before the divorce, so your family… But this time? I’m just your ex-wife, and now six months pregnant with your child. What will your family think of me? They’ll probably believe I did it on purpose. I don’t want anyone to know. That’s just how it is.”
Jonathan listened, his brow furrowing. “I’ll take the blame. I’ll just say it was my idea for you to keep it a secret.”
“That excuse is way too flimsy,” Teresa said, shaking her head. “Your family won’t buy it.”
“Then the best thing for us to do is get remarried,” Jonathan said firmly. “That way, no one would dare judge you.”
Teresa shook her head. She still refused to remarry. Whether it was one child or two, she wasn’t going to get back together with Jonathan just for the kids. She didn’t believe that returning to their old life—without a guarantee of real happiness—was truly best for the children. In her eyes, it was better to co-parent, ensuring the kids had both their mom and dad in their lives, growing up healthy and loved. That was what Teresa truly wanted.
Jonathan felt a complicated mix of emotions. Even with two kids, she still refused to remarry him. “If you don’t want to get back together, that’s your choice,” he said calmly. “But as their father, I have a responsibility to both Mike and our second child. I know what I need to do. I can’t just stand by and let you take care of Mike and go through this pregnancy all on your own, working yourself to exhaustion. Please, let me be there for you this time. Give me a chance to make up for the regrets I have from before.”
Back when Teresa was pregnant with Michael, Jonathan had been completely clueless. He was working in another city, totally unaware that she was going through childbirth and raising their son alone. Now, he was determined not to miss out on his second chance. His career was stable, and his main focus was in Nareigh. Even if he had to travel for work sometimes, he could adjust his schedule. This time, he wanted to prioritize Teresa and the kids above all else.
Teresa was quiet for a long time. Jonathan just kept looking at her, silent as well. At last, Teresa nodded. “It’s your right as their dad, and I can’t take that away. If you want to step up, I have no right to say no.”
“Alright,” Jonathan said, his brow relaxing. “I’ll have the driver pick you and Mike up tomorrow. Move in with me at Forlisle Rose Estate. It’s spacious, fully equipped, and I’ve even hired three maternity matrons to take care of you when I’m not around. You’ll be way more comfortable there.”
“No need, really. I’m perfectly comfortable here,” Teresa replied.
“A family of four squeezed into this little three-bedroom place is just too cramped,” Jonathan pressed, leaving no room for argument. “Just do as I say and move in with me. If you don’t want to see me, that’s fine. I’m at work most of the day anyway.”
