Chapter 643
"Jonathan." Donaldโs voice came, bam, behind them.
Jonathan and Gary whipped around. Donald and Jennifer were stepping out of the elevator, heading their way.
It was the first time Gary had to face Donald since finding out Werner was his father. Donaldโs gaze landed on Gary, who met his eyes. They both looked like they had something to say but couldnโt figure out how to start.
Gary broke the silence first, offering a small nod of greeting. Donald returned it.
โLetโs go in and see Hayden," Jennifer said flatly to Donald.
โYeah, sure,โ Donald replied.
As they disappeared into Haydenโs room, Gary stared hard at Jenniferโs back.
Jonathan turned to Gary and asked, โWhat were you going to say just now?โ
Garyโs mouth went tight. โOh, nothing. Forget itโฆโ
In the ward, Werner watched Donald and Jennifer walk in. He glared daggers at Jennifer. โCanโt believe youโd pull something like this.โ
Donald raised an eyebrow. โWhatโs that supposed to mean? What did Jennifer do?โ
Werner pointed at Jennifer and snapped, โAsk her yourself.โ Then he turned on Donald. โYour wifeโs a real piece of work. She ran her mouth to your grandpa about all our family dirt. That gave him a stroke. Nearly killed him.โ
Donald shot a confused look at Jennifer, but she had her story ready, and she delivered it without even blinking. โMr. Lynn was here for a check-up. I just happened to run into him. He asked questions, and I answered.โ
Werner let out an ugly laugh. โWow. So youโre good at passing the buck. I shouldโve never let Dervald marry you."
Donald had heard enough. โDad,โ he snapped, โyouโre one to talk. What about all the times youโve tried to shift the blame? Or did you forget why Mom divorced you in the first place!"
Werner shot back, โAt least I didnโt try to give my father a stroke on purpose, like Jennifer did.โ
โShut your mouth.โ A weak voice cut through the room. Hayden was awake, glaring at Werner from the bed, his eyes burning with fury.
โIf you hadnโt done anything to be ashamed of, you wouldnโt have to worry about people talking, would you? This is your fault. You put me in this bed, Werner,โ Hayden snapped.
Werner fell silent, his jaw tight. With Hayden awake, he had to keep quiet.
Donald tried to calm things down. โGrandpa, easy. The divorce was their call. Dad cheated on Mom. I donโt blame her for leaving.โ
A heavy sigh escaped Hayden. He reached for Donaldโs hand and patted it gently. โI know this must be hard on you and Cheryl.โ
Donaldโs eyes suddenly welled up with tears as he gripped Haydenโs wrinkled hand. โWeโre grown-ups, Grandpa. We can handle it. Pleaseโฆโ
โIโm not sad,โ Hayden snapped, his voice rough with anger. โIโm furious. At your father! How did I raise such a disgrace? Heโs a shame to this family!โ
Werner finally found his voice. โDad, I know I screwed up. Iโll take responsibility from now on.โ
โYour responsibility?โ Hayden shot back. โAnd what exactly is that?โ
โTo take care of you,โ Werner said quickly. โIโll stay right here by your side.โ
Hayden let out a disgusted grunt and waved him away. โDonโt bother. I wouldnโt want to be a burden. Thatโฆโ
โDonald,โ Hayden said, his focus shifting. โIs Jonathan still out there? Get him for me. I need to talk to him.โ
โSure, Grandpa.โ Donald went out and came back a moment later with Jonathan.
โGrandpa, you wanted to see me?โ Jonathan said.
Haydenโs eyes welled up with tears as he looked at Jonathan. โJonathan, my boy, I know youโve been running around, taking care of everything since I got here. I appreciate it.โ
