Listen to this chapter:

Gary yanked his arm free. โ€œWhat, your control freak act extends to me now? Iโ€™m not your sister. Iโ€™m a stranger, remember? You said it yourself. Iโ€™m free to do whatever I want.โ€

โ€œYouโ€“โ€ For once, Jennifer was speechless. โ€œFine. Iโ€™m begging. Is this what you want? For me to grovel? Right here, in the hospital? Donโ€™t do this to me. I need to prove I have what it takes to be a good doctor. I canโ€™t stand anyone looking down on me.โ€

Gary didnโ€™t answer, his silent fury more potent than any shout. She grabbed his arm again, her nails digging into his sleeve. โ€œIโ€™m begging you, Sanfordโ€ฆ No, Gary. Please. I am begging.โ€

He closed his eyes for a long moment. When he opened them, the look of pure disappointment was so intense it felt like a physical blow.

โ€œGo check on Hayden.โ€ With those final words, Gary turned on his heel and strode away.

Jennifer stared at his retreating figure, her jaw tight, fists clenched. After a momentโ€™s hesitation, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number she hadnโ€™t touched in ages.

โ€œHannah?โ€ The voice on the other end lit up with surprise. โ€œArenโ€™t you supposed to be at work right now? I wasnโ€™t expecting a call from you. Whatโ€™s going on? Is everything okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ Jennifer said. โ€œItโ€™s Teresa. Sheโ€™s in trouble.โ€

โ€œTeresa?โ€ Evelynโ€™s voice was sharp. โ€œWhat happened to her?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s in trouble here in Nareigh. Sheโ€™s not doing well at all,โ€ Jennifer said. โ€œLook, she needs to stay with you in Gorthany for a while. But she wonโ€™t listen to me. So, weโ€™re going to make her. Hereโ€™s what weโ€™ll doโ€ฆโ€

Jennifer laid out her plan. Evelyn listened, then said, โ€œHannah, this isnโ€™t right. You know how Teresa gets when people lie to her.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™d rather just let her struggle in Nareigh? Raising Michael alone while pregnant with another kid?โ€ Jennifer shot back.

โ€œPregnant? What are you talking about, Hannah? Teresaโ€™s pregnant? Whoโ€™s the father? Itโ€™s Jonathanโ€™s again, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Evelyn asked in surprise.

โ€œIโ€™ll fill you in later,โ€ Jennifer cut her off. โ€œRight now, Teresa needs to get out of Nareigh. Just do exactly what I say.โ€

She paused, the word feeling foreign on her tongue. โ€œMom.โ€

Evelyn was stunned into silence. โ€œHannah, youโ€ฆโ€

Jenniferโ€™s grip on her phone tightened. โ€œMom, this is for Teresaโ€™s own good. For all of us. Just trust me on this. Call her and say what I told you to. Iโ€™m sending you her medical report now.โ€ With that, she hung up.

Once Haydenโ€™s breathing had evened out in sleep, Werner slowly pushed himself up from the floor.

Jonathan had handled everythingโ€“hiring the caregivers, managing the endless paperwork, all of it. He watched Werner get up but said nothing.

โ€œJonathan.โ€ Gary walked in, eyes bloodshot and swollen.

Werner moved toward him, his face a mask of fatherly concern. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Were you crying?โ€

Garyโ€™s stare couldโ€™ve cut glass. โ€œBack off. Not your problem.โ€ Wernerโ€™s jaw clicked shut.

Gary turned back to Jonathan. โ€œI need to talk to you. Can you come outside for a second?โ€

Jonathan checked on Haydenโ€™s sleeping form, gave a quick nod, and walked out. Gary followed closely behind him.

Werner frowned as he watched them go. He thought, โ€˜Whatโ€™s so damn important they canโ€™t say it in front of me?โ€™

In the hallway, Gary came clean. He told Jonathan everythingโ€“how heโ€™d confronted Jennifer and confirmed she was the one whoโ€™d told Hayden all the family secrets.

โ€œDo you understand why sheโ€™d do it, Jonathan?โ€ Gary asked. โ€œWhy would she tell Grandpa right now, of all times?โ€

โ€œHow would I know? Just say it.โ€ Jonathan patted Garyโ€™s shoulder.

Gary felt sick to his stomach. He let out a sigh, the burden of his secret almost too much to bear. โ€œOkay, soโ€“โ€
