Gary yanked his arm free. โWhat, your control freak act extends to me now? Iโm not your sister. Iโm a stranger, remember? You said it yourself. Iโm free to do whatever I want.โ
โYouโโ For once, Jennifer was speechless. โFine. Iโm begging. Is this what you want? For me to grovel? Right here, in the hospital? Donโt do this to me. I need to prove I have what it takes to be a good doctor. I canโt stand anyone looking down on me.โ
Gary didnโt answer, his silent fury more potent than any shout. She grabbed his arm again, her nails digging into his sleeve. โIโm begging you, Sanfordโฆ No, Gary. Please. I am begging.โ
He closed his eyes for a long moment. When he opened them, the look of pure disappointment was so intense it felt like a physical blow.
โGo check on Hayden.โ With those final words, Gary turned on his heel and strode away.
Jennifer stared at his retreating figure, her jaw tight, fists clenched. After a momentโs hesitation, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number she hadnโt touched in ages.
โHannah?โ The voice on the other end lit up with surprise. โArenโt you supposed to be at work right now? I wasnโt expecting a call from you. Whatโs going on? Is everything okay?โ
โIโm fine,โ Jennifer said. โItโs Teresa. Sheโs in trouble.โ
โTeresa?โ Evelynโs voice was sharp. โWhat happened to her?โ
โSheโs in trouble here in Nareigh. Sheโs not doing well at all,โ Jennifer said. โLook, she needs to stay with you in Gorthany for a while. But she wonโt listen to me. So, weโre going to make her. Hereโs what weโll doโฆโ
Jennifer laid out her plan. Evelyn listened, then said, โHannah, this isnโt right. You know how Teresa gets when people lie to her.โ
โSo youโd rather just let her struggle in Nareigh? Raising Michael alone while pregnant with another kid?โ Jennifer shot back.
โPregnant? What are you talking about, Hannah? Teresaโs pregnant? Whoโs the father? Itโs Jonathanโs again, isnโt it?โ Evelyn asked in surprise.
โIโll fill you in later,โ Jennifer cut her off. โRight now, Teresa needs to get out of Nareigh. Just do exactly what I say.โ
She paused, the word feeling foreign on her tongue. โMom.โ
Evelyn was stunned into silence. โHannah, youโฆโ
Jenniferโs grip on her phone tightened. โMom, this is for Teresaโs own good. For all of us. Just trust me on this. Call her and say what I told you to. Iโm sending you her medical report now.โ With that, she hung up.
Once Haydenโs breathing had evened out in sleep, Werner slowly pushed himself up from the floor.
Jonathan had handled everythingโhiring the caregivers, managing the endless paperwork, all of it. He watched Werner get up but said nothing.
โJonathan.โ Gary walked in, eyes bloodshot and swollen.
Werner moved toward him, his face a mask of fatherly concern. โWhatโs wrong? Were you crying?โ
Garyโs stare couldโve cut glass. โBack off. Not your problem.โ Wernerโs jaw clicked shut.
Gary turned back to Jonathan. โI need to talk to you. Can you come outside for a second?โ
Jonathan checked on Haydenโs sleeping form, gave a quick nod, and walked out. Gary followed closely behind him.
Werner frowned as he watched them go. He thought, โWhatโs so damn important they canโt say it in front of me?โ
In the hallway, Gary came clean. He told Jonathan everythingโhow heโd confronted Jennifer and confirmed she was the one whoโd told Hayden all the family secrets.
โDo you understand why sheโd do it, Jonathan?โ Gary asked. โWhy would she tell Grandpa right now, of all times?โ
โHow would I know? Just say it.โ Jonathan patted Garyโs shoulder.
Gary felt sick to his stomach. He let out a sigh, the burden of his secret almost too much to bear. โOkay, soโโ
