Listen to this chapter:

โ€œSo it really was you,โ€ Gary said, the last bit of hope draining from his voice. โ€œYou told Hayden everything.โ€

Jennifer stared coldly at him. โ€œIโ€™m part of the Lynn family now. Donaldโ€™s my husband. His parents got divorced, and he couldnโ€™t bring himself to say it. I said it for him. Is that a problem?โ€

โ€œWhy now? Whyโ€™d you have to pick now?โ€ Garyโ€™s voice rose. โ€œYou know Grandpaโ€™s health is fragile with high blood pressure. Why bring this up to him now of all times?โ€

โ€œSo you tried to give him a stroke on purpose, huh? You did it. How can you wear that white coat and be so completely shameless?โ€

Jenniferโ€™s pen hit the floor with a sharp click. She picked it up without a word, snapped the cap on, and stood to face Gary.

She said calmly, โ€œHayden was here for a checkup. I bumped into him and told him the truth. At least he was already in the hospital if something went wrong.โ€

โ€œAnd what if he didnโ€™t make it?โ€ Gary shot back, his gaze burning into her. โ€œDid that thought ever cross your mind?โ€

He took a step closer. โ€œYou pulled this stunt to keep Teresa from telling Jonathan about their kid. Youโ€™re terrified of losing your job and Donald, so you roll the dice with an old manโ€™s life? When the hell did you become this twisted?โ€

โ€œAre you done?โ€ Jenniferโ€™s composure finally cracked. โ€œThis is my office, and we are in the hospital. You and I are nothing to each other. Who do you think you are, storming in here and questioning me?โ€

โ€œNothing to each otherโ€ฆโ€ Gary echoed, letting out a bitter laugh. โ€œIโ€™m Wernerโ€™s son. Donaldโ€™s brother. Does our friendship over all these years mean nothing to you now? Did you just erase it all? I thought we were best friends, Jennifer.โ€

โ€œIf you were my best friend,โ€ she sneered, โ€œyouโ€™d be on my side, not standing there waiting for my world to implode. I donโ€™t want Teresa to tell Jonathan everything, but itโ€™s not just about me. Iโ€™m trying to protect Teresa from making a huge mistake, one that would ruin her life.โ€

To Gary, her words werenโ€™t an explanation. They were just pathetic, twisted excuses.

Gary snapped, โ€œSo the whole worldโ€™s gotta play by your rules? You were never this twisted. Or maybeโ€ฆโ€ He choked on the words. โ€œMaybe this is who youโ€™ve always been, and I was just too stupid to see it.โ€

โ€œTwisted? You donโ€™t get to judge me. None of you do.โ€ Jenniferโ€™s voice stayed flat. โ€œYou have no clue what my life has been like. The number of people who have ever genuinely cared about me? I can count them on one hand. My only goal is to protect the very few people who matter to me.โ€

โ€œBut all you do is hurt people. Again and again.โ€ Garyโ€™s voice shook, โ€œIs your crappy childhood your only excuse? Iโ€™ve been through hell, too. Lots of people had messed-up childhoods, but they donโ€™t use it as an excuse to cross lines like you do.โ€

โ€œYou were wrong, Jennifer. Just admit it. You gambled with a manโ€™s life. Youโ€ฆโ€ he said, tears in his eyes. โ€œYou're aโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSanford-โ€ Jennifer started.

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ he snapped. โ€œDonโ€™t call me that. That name is dead. Iโ€™m Gary now. And you need to understand something, Jennifer. Youโ€™re gonna pay for what you did.โ€ He turned on his heel and walked away.

Jennifer stood there, stunned. Gary had never gone at her like that. Snapping out of it, she ran after him, grabbing his arm and dragging him to an empty end of the hall.

โ€œWhere are you going? Are you going to tell Jonathan everything?โ€ She was in his face now.
