Chapter 594
โThis is from my retirement fund. Thereโs 60 thousand in it. You should take this too.โ Werner handed her the new bank card.
Liora shook her head, refusing, but Werner still placed the bank card on her bedside table.
โPlease take it, itโll ease my conscience,โ he said. โYou need the money now, especially in Shaville where hospital bills are sky-high. Just accept it, please.โ
โIโm leaving today. I donโt know when Iโll be able to visit you again, or if Iโll ever come back. Take care of yourself, okay? Let Sanford take good care of you.โ With that, Werner moved to leave, his steps weighed down.
Sanford returned to the hospital room with food, only to find Liora already asleep. He decided not to wake her.
When Liora woke up, she saw Sanford holding the bank card. โMom, youโre awake,โ Sanford said. โIs this from Werner again?โ
Liora sighed weakly, โSanford, when you have time, just give the card back to him, okay?โ
Sanford asked, โMom, why is he giving you money? Does he have a crush on you, or is there something you two are hiding from me?โ
Liora sighed exasperatedly. โSanford, what nonsense are you talking about?โ
Sanford said, โWhen I got back, he happened to be coming downstairs. I saw him.โ
Lioraโs heart tightened, but she kept her expression calm. โOh?โ she responded casually. โAnd then?โ
โI saw him buying cigarettes, smoking with tears in his eyes. When I asked what was wrong, he just patted my shoulder and told me to take good care of you.โ
Liora remained silent, her expression unreadable.
Sanford raised an eyebrow at his mom. โThere isnโt really something going on between you two, is there?โ
โDonโt be ridiculous,โ Liora chuckled wryly. โI donโt have feelings for him.โ
โOh, okay then. Just stay away from him. That guyโs a two-timing jerk. Heโs married but still chasing other women, and now heโs still hung up on you. Trust me, heโs no good.โ
โHeโs seeing other women?โ Liora asked, her voice full of disbelief.
โI went back to Nareigh for a bit. He seemed decent enough on the surface, but who knew he was that kind of guy behind the scenes?โ Sanford shrugged. โNot our business anyway.โ
Sanford didnโt catch the flicker of unreadable emotion in Lioraโs eyes.
The test results for Werner and Liam came back. Liam was HIV-positive, meaning he was infected with HIV. He had absolutely nothing left to smile about.
Werner suddenly realized why Liam had looked so off that day; a chill ran down his spine. Thank goodness he hadnโt drunk with him. His test results were clean, no HIV. Still, Werner couldnโt shake his unease.
Being the coward he was, he immediately went to another hospital for a second test.
While Werner was at the hospital, Cathy went to the bank, hoping to withdraw their retirement fund early, only to be told that Werner had already taken out the entire 60 thousand.
He had withdrawn it just two days before he left for Shaville. At that moment, Cathyโs world came crashing down. Just when she was about to let go of her suspicions about Werner, he pulled this stunt.
That 60 thousand in the fund was their agreed-upon retirement nest egg. Theyโd promised that no one would touch it unless Donald or Cheryl needed the money.
With 150 thousand in total, Cathy wasnโt stupid, and she thought, โWho did he suddenly give all that money to? Was he transferring assets? Or was it for his mistress?โ
At that moment, her suspicions about him flared anew, reaching an unbearable peak.
