Chapter 593
Cathy declined. โI have a flight this afternoon.โ
Werner took Cathy to the airport, his face stern as he lectured her. โStop making a public spectacle of yourself. Iโve told you Iโm not seeing any other woman. Why canโt you just believe me?โ
Cathy asked, โThen tell me, where did the 100 thousand really go? Who did you give it to?โ
Werner said, โI lent it to a friend. You wouldnโt know them anyway. Theyโll pay me back soon enough.โ
Cathy pressed, โHow soon is โsoonโ?โ
โIโll definitely pay it back before New Year, so stop nagging already. My flightโs tomorrow. Iโll be home soon.โ
Cathy eyed him doubtfully. Werner flung the hospital report at her and snapped, โOpen your eyes and take a good look! I just had my blood tested.
โIf I went after other women now, Iโd be a dead man. Stop doubting me already. I donโt want to make a public spectacle of myself while Iโm away.โ
Cathy thought bitterly, โAs if Iโd want to embarrass myself out of town. Iโve been trying so hard to find irrefutable proof that heโs seeing another woman, but Iโve come up empty-handed.
โCould I just be imagining things?โ With these doubts weighing on her, Cathy had no choice but to leave.
With Cathy finally gone, Werner could finally breathe easily and rushed straight back to the hospital to find Liora.
Liora had just undergone chemotherapy and was exceptionally frail. Through the glass door, Werner saw her gaunt, skeletal figure, just skin and bones, and a pang of sorrow twisted in his chest.
Just as he was about to step forward, he spotted Sanford bustling around.
He had no choice but to hide out of sight and wait until Sanford went downstairs to grab some food. Only then did Werner finally slip into Lioraโs hospital room.
Liora froze for a split second at the sight of Werner, her eyes instantly filling with undisguised contempt. She visibly recoiled and spat out, โWhat the hell are you doing here?โ
Werner said, โPlease, donโt get worked up. I just wanted to check on you. I canโt believe your cancer cells have spread so quickly in just a few days.โ
Werner thought, โI left Shaville just the other day, and she could at least get out of bed then. How could she have deteriorated so quickly in just a few days?โ
Liora coughed weakly, her face sallow with illness. โThank you for coming to see me,โ she said, her voice faint. โBut please, just go. If Sanford comes back and finds you here, heโll get the wrong idea.โ
A bitter pang twisted in Wernerโs heart. After all, Liora was the mother of his child, and at that moment she was suffering from advanced-stage cancer. All he could do was sigh, utterly helpless to change anything.
The next instant, he cried before Liora. Lioraโs brows knitted tightly in disgust, her voice sharp as she demanded, โWhat the hell do you think youโre doing?โ
โIโm so sorry. I owe both you and Sanford an apology. Even though you had Sanford without telling me, I never should have let him believe Yorick was his father. I was too much of a coward.โ Werner hung his head in shame.
โI really donโt know what to do anymore. If he ever finds out a coward like me is his father, Iโm certain he wouldnโt accept me. So, letโs just take this secret to our graves.โ Werner gazed at Liora with grief-stricken eyes.
Werner said, โLiora, this must remain our secret. I know how incredibly cruel this is for you, but given our current circumstances, this truly is the least painful outcome.โ
He thought, โAt least Sanford wonโt fall apart. At least, I wonโt lose my current family either.โ
Lioraโs eyes brimmed with tears as she turned her face away in disgust. She said coldly, โDonโt come see me again. We never had anything to do with each other in the first place.โ She said nothing more.
Werner stopped crying. Then, he fished something out of his pocket.
