Chapter 595
Cathy found a secluded spot and cried for a long time. "I really don't know what to do," she thought. "The man I've shared a bed with for so many years is nothing but a complete fraud."
"If only I could go back to when I knew nothing at all, just stay a fool in ignorant bliss. Maybe then, life would have gone on peacefully? But she knew that there was no going back now.
Even if divorcing at nearly fifty would make her a laughingstock, Cathy was determined to go through with it. Even though Catherine and Cecilia tried to talk her out of it, she knew she simply couldnโt go on living like this anymore.
She couldnโt bring herself to call Werner. "What good would it do to call him and ask who he transferred all the assets to?" Cathy thought bitterly. "He'd never admit it anyway."
Cathy once again sought out her lawyer, William. All she could do was sob at him, pleading, โHow can I protect my full legal rights?"
"My husband withdrew all the retirement savings I worked so hard for, without even telling me. What on earth should I do?"
"Will I really walk away with nothing if we get divorced now? But Iโve done absolutely nothing wrong.โ
William said, โMrs. Lynn, please try not to panic. First, check if your husband has sold or transferred any property under his name without your knowledge. Then, gather evidence of his infidelity and any asset transfers as soon as possible."
"As long as he doesnโt have any illegitimate children, you and your children will remain the main beneficiaries in the divorce settlement.โ
Cathy wiped away her tears and declared firmly, "Alright, I will."
The next morning, Cheryl returned to Nareigh. Donald had asked her to come home. She took Serena straight to Teresaโs place.
Teresa said, โIโm not responsible for looking after your daughter. Iโm not even your real sister-in-law. At best, Iโm just your cousinโs wife. Your sister-in-law is Jennifer. Go ask her instead.โ
โTeresa, donโt even mention her. I swear, I canโt stand Jennifer,โ Cheryl raised her hand in mock oath. โIn my heart, youโve always been my only sister-in-law."
Teresa looked at Cherylโs utterly innocent face and thought, โShe probably still has no idea what her father, Werner, has been up to.'
Teresa naturally wouldnโt volunteer this information to Cheryl; she simply gave her a knowing look.
Cheryl batted her big, innocent eyes. "Teresa, Iโm counting on you to take care of Serena. Youโre the best! My most beautiful, generous, sexy, drop-dead gorgeous sister-in-law.โ
Teresa smirked. "Alright, stop buttering me up."
Cheryl pouted in protest, "Iโm being totally honest, okay? Youโre literally the most gorgeous woman Iโve ever seen."
Teresa had no patience for Cherylโs sweet talk and urged her to go home quickly, just in case there was a real emergency at home.
Cheryl asked, "Teresa, can I borrow your car to drive home?"
โNo way.โ
"Relax, Iโve got my driverโs license now."
Teresa still refused. She just didnโt feel comfortable letting Cheryl drive her car, and more importantly, if Jennifer saw Cheryl behind the wheel, sheโd never hear the end of it.
โOh, fine, ughโฆ I canโt believe my dad! He promised to get me a car, but who knows if heโs actually ordered it yet?โ
โIโll get you a cab,โ Teresa said, steering the conversation away.
โThanks, Teresa!โ Before leaving, Cheryl kissed Serena on the cheek, then tried to kiss Teresa too, only to be pushed away as Teresa feigned annoyance.
Cheryl was so carefree, Teresa thought. โI wonder if Cathy will actually divorce Werner.'
When she was just a child, she lived through her parentsโ divorce, Philip cheated, and she witnessed all their arguments.
Teresa wondered, โDoes a divorce hurt a child more when theyโre young, or is it even harder when theyโre already an adult? Honestly, I have no idea.
โOne thing is certain. An unhappy marriage brings nothing but pain to everyone in the family!
