Chapter 480
โYโyour daughter?โ Lyndon stammered, his glasses nearly slipping off in shock. His hands shook as he readjusted them. Cheryl didn't notice the complicated look in his eyes. She said breezily, โSheโs sleeping. Do you want to see her?โ
โJust keep your voice down, okay? Donโt wake her up. But donโt worry, sheโs really well-behaved. Once sheโs asleep, sheโll stay that way for hours,โ added Cheryl.
Lyndon didnโt say a word, freezing completely at the sight of the little baby in the bedroom.
โCheryl, is that really your daughter?โ he asked.
Cheryl replied, โYeah. Bet you didnโt see that coming, right? Sorry, I didnโt tell you sooner.โ
Lyndon said, โBut my cousin said you were single.โ
Cheryl paused, realizing who Lyndon meant. โYou mean Benny,โ she said. โI am single. Iโm a single mom. Nobody else knows about this. I only told you. Can you keep it a secret for me?โ
Lyndon fell silent again. After a moment, he patted his pockets and said, โI probably left my phone at home. I need to go back and look for it.โ
Without waiting for a response, he spun around and hurried off. Cheryl spotted his black phone on the couch, grabbed it, and ran after him. โLyndon, your phone is here!โ However, by the time she reached the door, he was gone.
Still in her slippers, Cheryl dashed to Lyndonโs car. He was just about to drive off when he saw her running toward him, phone in hand. He cursed inwardly and got out of the car with a forced smile.
โLook at me,โ he said, โI left my phone at your place and didnโt even notice.โ
โThatโs fine,โ Cheryl said with a smile. โActually, could I ask you for a favor?โ
Seeing Cheryl leaning against his car with no intention of leaving, Lyndon cursed silently again but maintained his polite smile. โWhat kind of favor?โ he asked.
Cheryl, seeing his gentle smile, blurted out her request. Since sheโd kept Serenaโs birth a secret from her family, she couldnโt bring Serena home. She hoped Lyndon could help look after Serena when she was away.
โLyndon, I trust you. I know youโre a kind person. Could you help me take care of my daughter?โ Cheryl asked.
Lyndon replied hesitantly, โCheryl, IโIโm a guy. Iโm not sure Iโm the best choice.โ
Cheryl insisted. โWell, donโt worry. My daughter is super easy to look after. You saw how relaxed I was when we went shopping. Once sheโs eaten, sheโll sleep for a long time.โ
Lyndon went quiet, pushing his glasses up his nose. Then he said, โWell, Cherylโฆ I havenโt even had breakfast yet.โ
โYou havenโt eaten yet?โ Cheryl hadnโt expected Lyndon to bring her breakfast when he hadnโt even eaten himself. โLet me treat you,โ she said. โThereโs a place ahead that makes great burritos. Iโll take you there.โ
Lyndon said, โMaybe we should justโโ
But before he could finish, Cheryl grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the restaurant. Lyndon cursed silently again, his impatience growing.
During breakfast, Lyndon excused himself to use the restroom and never returned. Cheryl had no idea sheโd been stood up. She waited for over an hour, worried Serena might wake up at home, and decided to go back. She called Lyndon, but only a cold voice prompt answered: โThe person you are calling is not available. Please leave your name and phone number after the tone.โ
Fearing something might have happened, Cheryl even checked the menโs restroom nearby, but Lyndon was nowhere to be found. She tried calling again, but still couldnโt get through. Probably, she thought, new moms get scatterbrained. Only then did Cheryl remember to message him on WhatsApp.
