Chapter 466
Teresa felt awful. She bought a bouquet and went to the hospital to visit the old woman. Seeing her lying in bed, frail and hooked up to a ventilator, Teresa couldnโt stop her tears from falling. Sanford stood by her side, completely baffled as to why Teresa was crying so hard over someone she didnโt even know. It was the first time Sanford had ever seen Teresa cry for an old lady who had nothing to do with her.
Suddenly, a sharp-looking middle-aged woman burst in, her emotions out of control as she pointed at Teresa, whose eyes were red from crying. โWhat are you doing here? My mom ended up like this because of you!โ
Sanford stepped in front of Teresa protectively. โThis has nothing to do with her. The real driver was someone else.โ
The woman let out a cold laugh. โDonโt think I donโt know. It was her, and she was chasing after the driver who hit my mom. He was speeding to get away from her, and thatโs why he hit my mom. At the end of the day, itโs all her fault. Sheโs the reason my mom got hurt.โ
โYouโre out of your mind. Forget it. Letโs go,โ Sanford said, trying to lead Teresa away, but the woman wouldnโt let them leave. Her family members came over and pulled her back, scolding her for losing it and reminding her that Teresa wasnโt the one who caused the accident.
With nowhere else to vent her anger, the woman treated Teresa and Sanford like enemies. In a fit of rage, she grabbed a cup of hot water from the table and threw it at Teresaโs face. Sanford quickly raised his arm to shield Teresa. The hot water splashed onto his arm, burning him.
โLady, thatโs assault and you know it,โ Teresa said.
โWho are you calling โladyโ? I didnโt even touch him!โ the woman shot back.
Teresa was worried about Sanford. He just sighed and said, โLetโs go. Donโt waste your time on this nutcase.โ
Teresa went with Sanford to get his injury checked out, and then took him out for a meal. After all, he got hurt protecting her.
Sanford tried to joke. โGood thing your face is still perfect. The world would be missing great beauty otherwise.โ
But Teresa couldnโt even smile. โMaybe Iโm the one to blame for all this,โ she murmured.
Sanford said, โDonโt let that crazy woman mess with your head. Her momโs accident has nothing to do with you. By the way, why were you crying today? Itโs not like sheโs your family.โ
โIsnโt that old lady pitiful? She didnโt do anything wrong. She should be enjoying her retirement, but something like this happened. Just like my grandparents,โ Teresa said softly.
Sanford looked confused. โWhat about your grandparents?โ
Teresa shook her head and whispered, โTheyโre gone.โ
โYou wanted to know why Jonathan and I got divorced, right?โ
โYeah, so why?โ Sanford asked, suddenly interested.
โThere was this one time when we were still married. Jonathan was away on a business trip, and his mom came over just to pick a fight. I talked back, and she pointed at me and said, โThis is the house my son paid for. If you donโt like it, go back to your own family,โโ Teresa spoke, and the tears sheโd been holding back finally slipped down her face.
โShe told me to go back to my family. But where was I supposed to go?โ Teresa let out a bitter laugh. โShe knew perfectly well I had no family to go to. She knew exactly how to hurt me, and she went straight for it.โ
โAt that time, you hadnโt reconnected with Jennifer yet, right? But what about your parents? I thought you got along with your mom?โ Sanford asked.
Teresa shook her head. โBoth my parents had already remarried by then. I grew up with my grandparents, and they were really good to me. But they died in a fire. I had no family to go back to, and Irene knew it. I didnโt dare stand up to her, because I had nowhere else to go!โ
โSo what about Jonathan? How did he react when he found out Irene told you to go back to your family?โ Sanford asked.
