Jonathan gave Teresa a long, meaningful look. “Guess I was meddling,” he said, then turned and left first. Sanford, however, stayed behind. Sanford said to Teresa, “Why not just use the lawyer I found for you?”

“No need, but thanks for thinking of me,” Teresa replied firmly. “You should go too.”

Sanford turned to Evelyn. “Evelyn, I won’t butt in anymore. You’ve got a great daughter, Teresa. Last night, she was speeding after that jerk who hit and ran. Teresa was the one who got the injured person to the hospital.”

Hearing this, Evelyn looked at Teresa, her eyes brimming with tears.

After Sanford left, Evelyn took Teresa’s hand, feeling a pang of guilt. “Teresa, thank you. You’ve really been through a lot this time.”

Teresa’s eyes instantly filled with tears. She pulled her hand back. “What are you planning to do with that $1 million? Don’t invest it again and just save it for your retirement, okay?”

“No,” Evelyn said after a moment’s thought. “I want to give that $1 million to you.” Teresa was stunned.

Evelyn was quiet for a while. “I still owe Jonathan money. I already gave you $600,000 before, and now, with this $1 million, just give it all to Jonathan.”

“This was my fault for being too impatient. I shouldn’t have asked Jonathan for help in the first place. Anyway, make sure to thank him for coming all this way.”

Teresa thought for a few seconds. “I’ve already given him over $200,000 myself. With your money, that should almost pay off the $2.6 million we owe him.”

“If it’s still not enough, I’ll sell Charlie’s car. I just want you to be able to face Jonathan with confidence.”

Teresa couldn’t quite understand. She thought, ‘Is Evelyn finally starting to think about my feelings?’ She asked, “But what about you? You’ll have nothing left. What are you going to do next?”

Evelyn wiped her tears, then gave a helpless, self-mocking smile. “I still want to work in beauty. I’m thinking of taking Isabel to Gorthany. I’m not hoping to make millions anymore, just enough for the two of us to get by.”

“I’ll wait until the lawsuit with Charlie is over, and after your sister’s wedding. Then I’ll go.”

Evelyn looked at Teresa. “So, are you going to pick Jonathan, or that Sanford guy from earlier?”

“I’m not picking either of them,” Teresa said.

Evelyn shook her head. “You silly girl, your sister’s already getting married. Are you really planning to stay single?”

“Yeah,” Teresa replied, then walked away.

The next day, Teresa went to Horizonlead Group. She hadn’t seen Jonathan since he was busy, so she left her bank card with the receptionist and asked her to give it to him.

After his meeting, Jonathan found out Teresa had come to pay him back. He knew the money was from Evelyn and gave Teresa a call.

“I was in a meeting and just finished. If you’re free, can we meet?” Jonathan asked.

“There’s no need,” Teresa replied. “It’s my mom who wanted to pay you back. She’s planning to take my sister to Gorthany. The $2.6 million we owed you—she’s returning it now, so she can finally feel at ease.”

Jonathan asked, “And what about you? Does this make you feel better?”

Teresa went silent. When she didn’t answer, Jonathan pressed, a bit unwilling to let it go. “Do you really have to do this?”

“Yeah,” Teresa said quietly, head down. “Check if I still owe you anything. I’ll pay back the rest as soon as I can.”

“No need,” Jonathan replied coldly. “Forget about the small change.”

The next second, all Teresa heard was the busy tone on the other end.

Sanford got in touch with Teresa. The old lady Charlie had knocked down was saved, but she ended up in a vegetative state.
