Chapter 450

At Horizonlead Group, Jonathan met with Chase. Chase produced the contract from the previous night and handed it over. โ€œMr. Lynn, looks like you lost this round.โ€

Jonathan merely glanced at it. For the project with Chase Group, heโ€™d only conceded $180 million. The โ€œ18 billionโ€ heโ€™d mentioned to Irene was entirely fabricated.

โ€œYou really play dirty, Mr. Shelton. Got me to sign while I was drunk. Thatโ€™s low.โ€

Chase smiled. โ€œMr. Lynn, weโ€™re both businessmen. Itโ€™s all about profit. Iโ€™m just looking out for my company. I hope you understand.โ€

As he spoke, Chase extended a hand, hoping for a smooth partnership. Jonathan took a slow sip of coffee, a faint smirk playing on his lips. โ€œIโ€™ll give you three seconds. Tear up the contract.โ€

Chase froze, then said, โ€œMr. Lynn, you already signed it. Now you want to back out? If anyoneโ€™s being shady, itโ€™s you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m telling you to tear it up because Iโ€™m giving you a way out. If you want to call me ruthless, donโ€™t blame me for going all the way.โ€

Just as Jonathan finished speaking, there was a knock at the door. โ€œMr. Lynn, hereโ€™s the file you requested.โ€ The assistant handed it over respectfully.

โ€œThanks. You can go now.โ€ Jonathan waved his hand. After the assistant left, he flipped through the file for a few seconds, then slid it over to Chase.

Chase looked confused, but as soon as he saw the document, his face paled. Seeing the panic in Chaseโ€™s eyes, Jonathan fixed him with a cold stare.

โ€œChase Group, huh? Interesting name. Youโ€™re supposed to be Dominic Sheltonโ€™s grandson, but youโ€™re not even the eldest. Turns out, youโ€™re not his grandson at allโ€”youโ€™re his son.โ€

Chaseโ€™s lips trembled. This was the familyโ€™s dirty secret. He was Dominicโ€™s illegitimate child, given to his so-called uncle, Declan, to cover up the scandal. Chase had grown up with his โ€œuncleโ€ as his legal guardian, but hardly anyone knew the truth. Now that Jonathan had exposed it, Chase was completely thrown.

โ€œMr. Lynn, I have no idea what youโ€™re talking about. Dominic is my grandfather. How could he be my father? If you spread rumors like this, Iโ€™ll sue you for slander.โ€

Jonathan tapped the table, clearly losing patience. He hated it when people argued with him. โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll leak this file to the press right now. Go ahead, sue me. Iโ€™ll be waiting.โ€

Chase panicked, forcing a smile. โ€œMr. Lynn, letโ€™s talk this out. If you donโ€™t want to work together, then we wonโ€™t.โ€

Right in front of Jonathan, Chase tore up the contract heโ€™d tricked Jonathan into signing while drunk, and promised there were no copies.

โ€œMr. Shelton, glad you understand. And tell your sisterโ€”sheโ€™d better stay away from me and my family from now on.โ€

Chase nodded, taking a deep breath. Now that Jonathan had him by the throat, he had no choice but to give in. If this family scandal ever got out, heโ€™d lose way more than just $180 million.

โ€œIโ€™ll do as you say, Mr. Lynn. Weโ€™ve got no beef, so I hope you wonโ€™t push me too far. About Sanford at dinnerโ€”he was out of line, and I sincerely apologize on his behalf. Iโ€™ll make sure to keep Winnie in check, too. Sorry for bothering you today. Iโ€™ll take my leave now.โ€ Though clearly unwilling, Chase could only turn and walk away.

Chapter 450

It wasnโ€™t long before Irene showed up at Horizonlead Group, rushing in to find Jonathan. Her face was pale, and she was practically out of breath. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Whatโ€™s happening with the company? I tried calling Winnie, but that awful woman wonโ€™t even pick up!โ€

Jonathan hesitated, then shook his head helplessly. That only made Irene more anxious. She grabbed his hand tightly.

โ€œJonathan, donโ€™t scare me. Iโ€™m getting old, my heart canโ€™t take thisโ€ฆ If you go bankrupt, how am I supposed to face our relatives? How do I face your late father? What am I supposed to do?โ€

Jonathan looked at her and asked, โ€œYou always said you could judge people. You said she was sincere, so I let my guard down.โ€

Irene wiped her tears, crying as she complained, โ€œItโ€™s all because of Teresa.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat about her?โ€

Irene crossed her arms. โ€œThis is all your faultโ€”making me swallow my pride and apologize to Teresa! And you expected me to grovel? My dignityโ€™s worth more than that. I told Teresa Iโ€™d find you a gentle, caring wife, someone better than her. I really thought Winnie was good, but who knew sheโ€™d turn out to be so scheming?โ€

Jonathan was at a loss for words. He shot back, โ€œDo you really think, with my status, anyone would be with me for pure reasons? If itโ€™s not for my money, what else is there? My divorce? My age?โ€

โ€œIโ€”โ€ Irene was speechless.

โ€œDonโ€™t think like that. There are plenty of divorced men these days. Youโ€™re only thirty; thatโ€™s not old at all. Youโ€™re good-looking, too. I thought anyone would be better than Teresa.โ€

Irene was desperate to prove that anyone would be better than Teresa, as if every woman in the world could outshine her. Sheโ€™d even promised Teresa sheโ€™d find someone better, but now, after everything that happenedโ€ฆ

Irene pressed a handkerchief to her red eyes. โ€œI know, I misjudged her this time. Thereโ€™s no point talking about it now. You worked so hard to get where you are, and itโ€™s all my fault. Youโ€™ve lost everything because of me.โ€

Jonathan was silent for a long moment. Finally, he said, โ€œItโ€™s not that bad. Itโ€™s been handled.โ€

Irene froze, then quickly pressed him, โ€œReally? Youโ€™re not lying, are you? Is it really over?โ€

โ€œWe didnโ€™t lose 18 billion dollars. Just millions,โ€ he said, completely unfazed.

Irene got even angrier. โ€œYouโ€™re just going to let them take millions? Sue them! Donโ€™t let the Sheltons get away with this!โ€

โ€œHow am I supposed to sue? The contractโ€™s signed, clear as day. If you hadnโ€™t pushed me to be with Winnieโ€ฆ Fine, lesson learned. Just stop setting me up, okay?โ€

But Irene just couldnโ€™t let it go. The thought of losing out to outsiders, especially a woman who schemed against Jonathanโ€ฆ

Jonathan said, โ€œThis time it was just a small loss. What about next time? Are you going to push me to ruin, leave me out on the street? Would that make you happy?โ€

Irene nodded, defeated. โ€œAlright, I get it. I wonโ€™t meddle anymore.โ€
