Chapter 451
Still, Irene couldnโt help but feel bad. She wondered, โDid the 300 million dollars really go to Winnie?โ Jonathan kept his head down, looking at the documents. โIโll talk to the lawyer again to see if thereโs another way. Itโll take some time. You know, Iโve been swamped lately.โ
Irene nodded. โIf you need anything, just let me know. I will take care of it for you.โ
Jonathan looked up and glanced at her, looking a little annoyed. โPlease stop getting involved in my work and my personal life. I own a company. I think I can handle this much.โ
Irene nodded repeatedly. โAlright then, Iโll leave you alone. Go ahead, but make sure to take care of yourself. And donโt rush into finding a wife. After all, people can be unpredictable. Youโve got to be careful.โ
โI know.โ Jonathanโs brow finally relaxed. He had no intention of looking for one anyway.
Once Irene left, the office fell quiet again. Jonathan felt even more relaxed, enjoying the peace of having no one nagging him about when he was going to get married.
Not long after, Donald came to see Jonathan, bringing him a wedding invitation. He was going to hold a wedding on July 7th at the Skycrest Grand Hotel.
โI can help you book a better hotel,โ Jonathan said. The Skycrest Grand Hotel was pretty old, and the dรฉcor wasnโt great.
Donald shook his head, turning down Jonathanโs offer. โJonathan, you already paid for my engagement with Jennifer. I canโt let you spend more on us. Youโve done enough.โ
Seeing how firm Donald was, Jonathan didnโt push it.
โBy the way, I ran into Aunt Irene on my way here. She didnโt look like she was in a good mood,โ Donald mentioned.
Jonathan gave a small, knowing smile and briefly explained to Donald why Irene was upset.
Donald was surprised. โAre you talking about Ms. Shelton, the one who came to the restaurant last time? I didnโt expect she wasnโt sincere with you.โ
Jonathan shrugged and said, โItโs no big deal. Most people I deal with arenโt completely sincere with me.โ
Donald felt bad for Jonathan, so he said seriously, โJonathan, weโre always here for you. No matter how people out there treat you, your family will never betray you.โ
He was right. Even though Jonathan was already in charge of the company, his siblings had never tried to get anything from him.
Jonathan patted Donald on the shoulder, feeling reassured. โHearing you say that puts my mind at ease.โ
โWell, I wonโt keep you from work. If you ever need anything, just let me know. Iโll try my best to help,โ Donald said.
โSure.โ Jonathan smiled. โDid you drive here?โ
Donald nodded. โYeah, my car is downstairs. Iโll get going then.โ
Jonathan nodded.
Once Donald left, Jonathan picked up the wedding invitation, flipping it open. Seeing Donald and Jenniferโs names brought back memories of his own wedding to Teresa. He didnโt have much money at that time, and his family didnโt approve of his marriage to Teresa, so their wedding was small and simple. Now he was well-off and was able to give her a grand, perfect wedding she deserved, but they could never get back together.
Jonathan slipped the invitation into his drawer and threw himself back into work, trying to numb the pain.
As night fell and they got off work, Donald and Jennifer headed back to their house. Jennifer went to make dinner, and Donald helped her out in the kitchen. After dinner, Donald gave Jennifer a shoulder massage.
โBabe, you know, I think being a doctor really suits me. If I ever went into business, I probably wouldnโt have the stomach for all that scheming,โ Donald said.
Jennifer felt strange and asked him why he had suddenly brought that up, and that was when Donald told her about Jonathan. He said, โIn business, everyone is just out for themselves. You never know whoโs genuine.โ
Jennifer pressed her lips and said, โLooks like Jonathan isnโt exactly someone foolish enough to let his guard down.โ
Donald shrugged. โHe started his company when he was young. Of course, heโs always cautious. I just feel sad that he runs a huge business, but thereโs hardly anyone he can trust.โ
โYou should be careful, too,โ Jennifer said quickly. โWhat if he tries to pull something on you?โ
Donald couldnโt help but laugh at her silly words. โHe got everything. What could he want from me? Honestly, we all feel bad for him. He once told me if he canโt even trust his own family, then thereโs no one left he can trust.โ
Jennifer fell silent. After a moment, she just gave a quiet โMmโ and changed the subject, going back to talking about her marriage to Donald.
Unlike an engagement, a wedding usually meant inviting a lot more people; otherwise, the dinner tables ended up too quiet, and it just looked bad. Jennifer didnโt have many friends or relatives, and not many colleagues from the hospital could make it either.
She said, โIโm going to ask some of my classmates whether they would like to attend our wedding.โ
โThat sounds great.โ Donald nodded and said, โLetโs invite Ms. Nelson, the teacher who adopted you. I want to thank her because if it werenโt for her, I wouldnโt have met you and married you.โ
Jennifer was touched, letting Donald lean down and kiss her. โDonald, Iโm lucky to have you, too. Youโve healed a lot of the pain Iโve been through.โ
โHow about this? When weโre both off tomorrow, letโs go visit Ms. Nelson together and invite her to the wedding. I want her to see how happy we are,โ Donald suggested.
Jennifer nodded. She had been thinking the same thing. She felt ashamed that she hadnโt visited Genevieve in a long time.
โWith you by my side, Iโm sure Ms. Nelson will give us her blessing,โ Jennifer said.
โAlright.โ
Early the next morning, Donald went with Jennifer to pick out some gifts for Genevieve. They loaded them into the trunk, ready to hit the road.
As soon as Jennifer got into the car, a wave of nausea washed over her and she gagged a little.
Donald looked over, worried. โWhatโs wrong? Is your stomach hurting?โ
Jennifer covered her mouth. โProbably something I ate this morning.โ
โThatโs strange. We ate the same thing. I made the ravioli this morning, and the vegetables were fresh too. What else did we have? Could the nuts have gone bad?โ Donald wondered aloud.
Jennifer leaned her head back against the seat. โMaybe. Can you pull over and grab me some water? I think thatโll help.โ
Donald did as she asked, not thinking much about it. After having some water, Jennifer felt a lot better.
โIf youโre still feeling sick, just let me know. We can visit Ms. Nelson next time if you want,โ Donald said, still concerned.
โIโm fine now.โ Jennifer knew perfectly well why she was feeling nauseous. They had to pass through Lonisburg on their way to see Genevieve. On their way, Donald caught sight of a woman suddenly collapsing to the ground. From her height and silhouette, it looked a lot like Cherryโฆ
