Chapter 449
โMr. Lynn, working with our Chase Group canโt be that hard, right?โ Winnie asked.
โMs. Shelton, itโs not that I disrespect you, but as the CEO, I have to put the companyโs interests first. Besides, last time I had dinner with one of his friends, Sanford, he started mouthing off at me. Does he look like someone you can just walk all over?โ
Winnie wasnโt clueless; it was obvious Jonathan wasnโt going to give her any leeway. She said, โThen Iโll just talk to your mother. She really likes me, and I doubt youโd go against your own mother, right?โ
A cold, mocking look flashed in Jonathanโs eyes. โBe my guest.โ With that, he hung up.
Night had fallen, and the evening air was no longer stifling. Jonathan drove alone to the Horizonlead Plaza construction site, adjacent to Rosary Estates. He parked at the entrance.
From where he sat, he could see Teresaโs building. The lights were off. She wasnโt home yet. At work, he always wished he could split every minute in two, but now, time seemed to drag on forever.
While lost in thought, Jonathan received a voice message. Recognizing the number, he tapped to listen. A childโs choppy voice filled the speaker.
โMr. Lime, are you getting married? Then you have to be super happy, okay? When I grow up and make money, Iโll give you a gift! Iโll wish you happiness!โ
Jonathan smiled and replied, โWhat is your gift, Mike?โ
โSo much money! Iโm really generous, you know.โ
Jonathan chuckled. โThank you, Mike. Youโre so sweet. But you donโt have to give me a gift, because Iโm not getting married.โ
After sending the message, a long silence followed. Jonathan assumed the little guy wouldnโt reply, but then Mike sent another lengthy voice message.
Jonathan instantly understood. Michael had been watching TV alone and caught some news segments. โSo youโre saying TV lied about you not getting married?โ Michael pouted, crossing his arms. โDonโt think you can trick me just because Iโm a kid!โ
After hearing Mike out, Jonathan sent a message. Mike listened several times, grinning from ear to ear, then dashed to Teresaโs room and shook her as she lay on her side.
โMom, Mom, I have a secret to tell you. Mr. Lime said heโs not getting married!โ
Hearing that, Teresa, whoโd been hiding under the covers, threw off her blanket. Her eyes were red as she stared at Mike. โWho told you that?โ
Mike waved his phone, beaming. โMr. Lime told me himself! He even sent me a voice message. He said the person he likes wonโt marry him, so heโs not getting married.โ
The little guy played the voice message, and Teresa heard, โIf the one I like wonโt marry me, and I canโt wait for her, then Iโll just stay single for now.โ
Teresa wiped away her tears. Sheโd been secretly crying because of the stupid news. Only then did Mike notice her red eyes. โMom, were you crying?โ
โI wasnโt,โ Teresa insisted, though she felt much calmer now. Sheโd been really upset earlier. If Jonathan really was getting married, and she feltโฆ
Michael poked her arm, looking cute. โMom, did you cry because Mr. Lime was getting married?โ
โI wouldnโt cry for him. Weโre not even close,โ Teresa huffed.
โBut you like Mr. Lime! You told me you liked him, remember? I remember everything. Iโm not forgetful!โ
Teresa was speechless, caught under her sonโs bright, innocent gaze. She turned away and flopped back onto the bed. โI donโt like him anymore.โ
The next day, Winnie invited Jonathan out again, supposedly to apologize for her behavior. Jonathan knew it was a setup, but he still went. When Winnie showed up, she brought her brother, Chase, along.
The siblings plied Jonathan with drinks until he was pleasantly buzzedโthree glasses deep and compliant enough. Then Chase smoothly slid a contract from his briefcase and guided Jonathanโs hand to sign it, all masked as friendly persuasion.
Winnie shot Chase a victorious look. Their plan worked without a word needing to be said. Jonathan pretended nothing had happened and went home.
He woke the next morning to frantic knocking. When he opened the door, Irene rushed in, her face flushed with panic. โWhatโs this news about you getting married? I swear I didnโt leak it!โ
โSo it wasnโt that โperfect wife and loving motherโ you picked out for me who went public with it?โ
Ireneโs lips pressed into a thin line as realization struck. Winnie orchestrated the media leak. โShe told me straight,โ she admitted. โThis was her play to force your hand with Chase Group.โ
โI just donโt get it. Isnโt this a good thing? Chase Group has a great reputation. Working with them wouldnโt do you any harm.โ
Jonathan didnโt say a word. Heโd never liked Irene meddling in his work. He turned away to wash up, mentioning that heโd gotten drunk yesterday and had already met with Winnie and Chase.
โGo wash up first. Iโll make you some hangover remedy,โ Irene said, already marching toward the kitchen. She thought, โWhy did Jonathan insist on living alone without even hiring a housekeeper?โ
โMr. Lynn, somethingโs wrong!โ Jonathanโs assistant rushed in while he was eating, having come in person since he couldnโt reach him.
Irene slammed her fork down. โCanโt you see weโre having dinner? Itโs only seven oโclock. Canโt you let Mr. Lynn eat in peace?โ
โItโs really serious, Mr. Lynn.โ The assistant leaned in and whispered in Jonathanโs ear. Jonathanโs expression changed instantly.
Jonathan nodded. โGot it. Head back to the office first.โ
Irene noticed Jonathanโs deep frown. โWhatโs going on? Did something happen at the company?โ
Jonathan collapsed onto the couch, rubbing his temples in exhaustion. โI got played. Winnie and her brother got me drunk last night and tricked me into signing a contract. This damn projectโs gonna cost meโweโre talking 18 billion down the drain.โ
โ18 billion?โ Ireneโs face went white. โJonathan, youโre kidding, right? How could we lose that much? Isnโt the company going bankrupt?โ
โPretty much on the verge of bankruptcy. All because you said Winnie was sincere. Now Iโve been played by her.โ
โNo, thatโs impossible.โ Irene still refused to believe sheโd misjudged Winnie. โWinnie wonโt do that.โ
โIโm heading back to the office. Youโd better prepare for the worst,โ Jonathan pressed a hand on Ireneโs shoulder. โThe person you vouched forโyeah, great job.โ
As soon as Jonathan left, Irene collapsed onto the sofa; her whole body shaking uncontrollably.
