Chapter 449

โ€œMr. Lynn, working with our Chase Group canโ€™t be that hard, right?โ€ Winnie asked.

โ€œMs. Shelton, itโ€™s not that I disrespect you, but as the CEO, I have to put the companyโ€™s interests first. Besides, last time I had dinner with one of his friends, Sanford, he started mouthing off at me. Does he look like someone you can just walk all over?โ€

Winnie wasnโ€™t clueless; it was obvious Jonathan wasnโ€™t going to give her any leeway. She said, โ€œThen Iโ€™ll just talk to your mother. She really likes me, and I doubt youโ€™d go against your own mother, right?โ€

A cold, mocking look flashed in Jonathanโ€™s eyes. โ€œBe my guest.โ€ With that, he hung up.

Night had fallen, and the evening air was no longer stifling. Jonathan drove alone to the Horizonlead Plaza construction site, adjacent to Rosary Estates. He parked at the entrance.

From where he sat, he could see Teresaโ€™s building. The lights were off. She wasnโ€™t home yet. At work, he always wished he could split every minute in two, but now, time seemed to drag on forever.

While lost in thought, Jonathan received a voice message. Recognizing the number, he tapped to listen. A childโ€™s choppy voice filled the speaker.

โ€œMr. Lime, are you getting married? Then you have to be super happy, okay? When I grow up and make money, Iโ€™ll give you a gift! Iโ€™ll wish you happiness!โ€

Jonathan smiled and replied, โ€œWhat is your gift, Mike?โ€

โ€œSo much money! Iโ€™m really generous, you know.โ€

Jonathan chuckled. โ€œThank you, Mike. Youโ€™re so sweet. But you donโ€™t have to give me a gift, because Iโ€™m not getting married.โ€

After sending the message, a long silence followed. Jonathan assumed the little guy wouldnโ€™t reply, but then Mike sent another lengthy voice message.

Jonathan instantly understood. Michael had been watching TV alone and caught some news segments. โ€œSo youโ€™re saying TV lied about you not getting married?โ€ Michael pouted, crossing his arms. โ€œDonโ€™t think you can trick me just because Iโ€™m a kid!โ€

After hearing Mike out, Jonathan sent a message. Mike listened several times, grinning from ear to ear, then dashed to Teresaโ€™s room and shook her as she lay on her side.

โ€œMom, Mom, I have a secret to tell you. Mr. Lime said heโ€™s not getting married!โ€

Hearing that, Teresa, whoโ€™d been hiding under the covers, threw off her blanket. Her eyes were red as she stared at Mike. โ€œWho told you that?โ€

Mike waved his phone, beaming. โ€œMr. Lime told me himself! He even sent me a voice message. He said the person he likes wonโ€™t marry him, so heโ€™s not getting married.โ€

The little guy played the voice message, and Teresa heard, โ€œIf the one I like wonโ€™t marry me, and I canโ€™t wait for her, then Iโ€™ll just stay single for now.โ€

Teresa wiped away her tears. Sheโ€™d been secretly crying because of the stupid news. Only then did Mike notice her red eyes. โ€œMom, were you crying?โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t,โ€ Teresa insisted, though she felt much calmer now. Sheโ€™d been really upset earlier. If Jonathan really was getting married, and she feltโ€ฆ

Michael poked her arm, looking cute. โ€œMom, did you cry because Mr. Lime was getting married?โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t cry for him. Weโ€™re not even close,โ€ Teresa huffed.

โ€œBut you like Mr. Lime! You told me you liked him, remember? I remember everything. Iโ€™m not forgetful!โ€

Teresa was speechless, caught under her sonโ€™s bright, innocent gaze. She turned away and flopped back onto the bed. โ€œI donโ€™t like him anymore.โ€

The next day, Winnie invited Jonathan out again, supposedly to apologize for her behavior. Jonathan knew it was a setup, but he still went. When Winnie showed up, she brought her brother, Chase, along.

The siblings plied Jonathan with drinks until he was pleasantly buzzedโ€”three glasses deep and compliant enough. Then Chase smoothly slid a contract from his briefcase and guided Jonathanโ€™s hand to sign it, all masked as friendly persuasion.

Winnie shot Chase a victorious look. Their plan worked without a word needing to be said. Jonathan pretended nothing had happened and went home.

He woke the next morning to frantic knocking. When he opened the door, Irene rushed in, her face flushed with panic. โ€œWhatโ€™s this news about you getting married? I swear I didnโ€™t leak it!โ€

โ€œSo it wasnโ€™t that โ€˜perfect wife and loving motherโ€™ you picked out for me who went public with it?โ€

Ireneโ€™s lips pressed into a thin line as realization struck. Winnie orchestrated the media leak. โ€œShe told me straight,โ€ she admitted. โ€œThis was her play to force your hand with Chase Group.โ€

โ€œI just donโ€™t get it. Isnโ€™t this a good thing? Chase Group has a great reputation. Working with them wouldnโ€™t do you any harm.โ€

Jonathan didnโ€™t say a word. Heโ€™d never liked Irene meddling in his work. He turned away to wash up, mentioning that heโ€™d gotten drunk yesterday and had already met with Winnie and Chase.

โ€œGo wash up first. Iโ€™ll make you some hangover remedy,โ€ Irene said, already marching toward the kitchen. She thought, โ€˜Why did Jonathan insist on living alone without even hiring a housekeeper?โ€™

โ€œMr. Lynn, somethingโ€™s wrong!โ€ Jonathanโ€™s assistant rushed in while he was eating, having come in person since he couldnโ€™t reach him.

Irene slammed her fork down. โ€œCanโ€™t you see weโ€™re having dinner? Itโ€™s only seven oโ€™clock. Canโ€™t you let Mr. Lynn eat in peace?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s really serious, Mr. Lynn.โ€ The assistant leaned in and whispered in Jonathanโ€™s ear. Jonathanโ€™s expression changed instantly.

Jonathan nodded. โ€œGot it. Head back to the office first.โ€

Irene noticed Jonathanโ€™s deep frown. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Did something happen at the company?โ€

Jonathan collapsed onto the couch, rubbing his temples in exhaustion. โ€œI got played. Winnie and her brother got me drunk last night and tricked me into signing a contract. This damn projectโ€™s gonna cost meโ€”weโ€™re talking 18 billion down the drain.โ€

โ€œ18 billion?โ€ Ireneโ€™s face went white. โ€œJonathan, youโ€™re kidding, right? How could we lose that much? Isnโ€™t the company going bankrupt?โ€

โ€œPretty much on the verge of bankruptcy. All because you said Winnie was sincere. Now Iโ€™ve been played by her.โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s impossible.โ€ Irene still refused to believe sheโ€™d misjudged Winnie. โ€œWinnie wonโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m heading back to the office. Youโ€™d better prepare for the worst,โ€ Jonathan pressed a hand on Ireneโ€™s shoulder. โ€œThe person you vouched forโ€”yeah, great job.โ€

As soon as Jonathan left, Irene collapsed onto the sofa; her whole body shaking uncontrollably.
