Chapter 442
Jennifer mused, โOh, come on. Cheryl had a baby and didnโt even tell you!โ But she simply said, โSheโs an adult nowโCheryl has her own life, and we have ours.โ
Donald smiled. โJennifer, donโt tell me youโre jealous of Cheryl. Relax, youโre both important to me. Just because weโre married now doesnโt mean Iโll stop cherishing you.โ
When they arrived at the Lynn residence, Donald parked, and Cheryl rushed out to greet them. Donald got out and looked Cheryl up and down. โHonestly, I thought you werenโt coming home.โ
โOh, please! How could I not come back? But enough about meโyou two got your marriage certificate? Let me see it!โ Cheryl exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Donald handed her the certificate, allowing only a quick peek. Cheryl flipped it open and teased, โNot bad. You finally made it.โ
Donald put the certificate away and tapped Cheryl on the head. โBe honestโare you seeing someone?โ
โMy dear brother, if I had a boyfriend, youโd be the first to know,โ Cheryl replied.
Donald glanced at Jennifer, as if to say, โSee? My sister doesnโt keep secrets from me.โ
โDr. Nelson, congrats. Wishing you two a happy marriage,โ Cheryl said with a wink.
โHey, weโre family now,โ Donald said, giving Cheryl another playful tap. โJust call her by her name.โ
โYeah, right. Not happening,โ Cheryl muttered, shooting Jennifer a look before turning away.
Donald squeezed Jenniferโs hand. โShe needs to learn some manners. Iโll have a talk with her.โ
Jennifer tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and shook her head. โItโs fine. Sheโs too young.โ
โSheโs not a kid anymoreโsheโs just spoiled by the family. Iโll definitely talk to her later. Donโt worry,โ Donald said, wanting Jennifer to feel reassured. He kissed her cheek.
A little while later, Hayden came home, supported by Werner, and took his seat at the head of the table. He put on his reading glasses and carefully studied Donaldโs marriage certificate. โGood. Now letโs get started on planning the wedding.โ
Donald carefully tucked the certificate into his pocket. โI will, Grandpa,โ he promised.
Hayden nodded and turned to Werner. โWhereโs Jonathan?โ
โDad, I already called Jonathan and Irene. Theyโre on their way back,โ Werner replied.
Hayden thumped his cane on the floor. โThat kidโalways making us wait for him.โ
No sooner had he finished speaking than Ireneโs voice rang out, โDad, weโre back.โ
Irene entered with a woman by her side, her arms loaded with gift bagsโbig and small, gifts for everyone.
Donald stood up. โAunt Irene, who is this?โ
โThis is Jonathanโs girlfriend,โ Irene said.
โWhat?โ
Everyoneโs faces showed varied reactions as they sized up the woman. She looked rather sly, with a crafty hint in her ear.
When Jonathan returned, Hayden questioned, โTell me, is this woman really your girlfriend?โ
Jonathan looked down and quietly replied, โYeah.โ
โRidiculous! You must be trying to fool me.โ Hayden jabbed a finger at Jonathan. โWhere did you find her? Did you pay her to come here and put on a show for me?โ
โSir,โ the woman beside him piped up sweetly, โIโm Wilnie. I really am Jonathanโs girlfriend.โ
Winnie tried to get Hayden some coffee, but he brushed her hand away. โNo need.โ
Pointing at Jonathan, Hayden said, โIs this really your taste now? Sheโs nowhere near as pretty as Teresa.โ
Winnieโs face instantly fell.
Irene tried to smooth things over. โCome on, whatโs the point of this? Jonathanโs been divorced for agesโcanโt he just start over?โ
Hayden shot Irene a glare and then glared at Jonathan again. โLet me say this one more time: I only accept Teresa as my granddaughter-in-lawโunless the next one you bring home actually pleases me. Iโm not in the mood for dinner now. This is way too annoying.โ
Seeing Hayden leave with his cane, Werner and Cathy hurried after him, while Irene took a deep breath and followed to explain.
Jennifer stood up and looked at Jonathan. โI think this girlโs pretty nice. On behalf of Teresa, Iโll just sayโwishing you two all the best.โ
โJennifer,โ Donald frowned and tugged her hand, signaling her to stop.
Jennifer grinned. She hadnโt felt this happy in ages. โWhat, did I say something wrong? Isnโt today a double celebration? We got our marriage certificate, and Jonathan found himself a girlfriend. Thatโs great news, isnโt it?โ
Jonathan didnโt respond. Instead, he patted Donald on the shoulder and gave him a gift. โIโve got things to take care of, so Iโll head out first.โ
โOh, I really appreciate it,โ Donald said.
โWish you two happy,โ Jonathan said, glancing at the marriage certificate on the table. He masked his sorrow and walked away.
As soon as Jonathan left, Winnie hurried after him.
Cheryl pulled out her phone and started snapping photos of Winnie, shaking her head. โWell, Iโm with Grandpaโsheโs nowhere near as pretty as Teresa.โ
โAs long as Jonathan likes her,โ Jennifer said with a meaningful look. โMaybe this is just his type. Everyoneโs got their own path now. You should find yours, too.โ She tugged at Donaldโs sleeve and led him away.
Cheryl was left speechless. She shouted at Jenniferโs back, โI wasnโt even talking to you! Why do you always have to butt in?โ
With a whole table of food left untouched, Cheryl decided not to let it go to waste and dug in all by herself.
Winnie hurried after Jonathan. He glanced at her and asked, โWhatโs wrong?โ
โYou still donโt trust me, do you? I already told Mrs. LynnโI donโt care that youโve been divorced. Everyone has a past. I like you for who you are,โ she said earnestly.
โOh? Really?โ Jonathan replied, his face unreadable, his eyes dark and deep like ink.
Winnie didnโt dare hesitate, afraid heโd see through her. She nodded immediately. โOf course, I mean it.โ
โMy mom will take you home later. You donโt need to follow me anymore,โ Jonathan said, then got into his car.
As the car pulled away, he leaned back in his seat, Ireneโs words echoing in his mind: โIโve found you a great match; sheโs the perfect wife and mother type. Sheโll be amazing. Son, just trust me this once. I know what Iโm talking about. Sheโs way more genuine than Teresa ever was. Let Teresa see what a gentle, caring wife youโve found.โ
Snapping back to reality, he tapped his fingers lightly on his knee, lost in thought.
