Chapter 442

Jennifer mused, โ€œOh, come on. Cheryl had a baby and didnโ€™t even tell you!โ€ But she simply said, โ€œSheโ€™s an adult nowโ€”Cheryl has her own life, and we have ours.โ€

Donald smiled. โ€œJennifer, donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re jealous of Cheryl. Relax, youโ€™re both important to me. Just because weโ€™re married now doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ll stop cherishing you.โ€

When they arrived at the Lynn residence, Donald parked, and Cheryl rushed out to greet them. Donald got out and looked Cheryl up and down. โ€œHonestly, I thought you werenโ€™t coming home.โ€

โ€œOh, please! How could I not come back? But enough about meโ€”you two got your marriage certificate? Let me see it!โ€ Cheryl exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

Donald handed her the certificate, allowing only a quick peek. Cheryl flipped it open and teased, โ€œNot bad. You finally made it.โ€

Donald put the certificate away and tapped Cheryl on the head. โ€œBe honestโ€”are you seeing someone?โ€

โ€œMy dear brother, if I had a boyfriend, youโ€™d be the first to know,โ€ Cheryl replied.

Donald glanced at Jennifer, as if to say, โ€œSee? My sister doesnโ€™t keep secrets from me.โ€

โ€œDr. Nelson, congrats. Wishing you two a happy marriage,โ€ Cheryl said with a wink.

โ€œHey, weโ€™re family now,โ€ Donald said, giving Cheryl another playful tap. โ€œJust call her by her name.โ€

โ€œYeah, right. Not happening,โ€ Cheryl muttered, shooting Jennifer a look before turning away.

Donald squeezed Jenniferโ€™s hand. โ€œShe needs to learn some manners. Iโ€™ll have a talk with her.โ€

Jennifer tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s fine. Sheโ€™s too young.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not a kid anymoreโ€”sheโ€™s just spoiled by the family. Iโ€™ll definitely talk to her later. Donโ€™t worry,โ€ Donald said, wanting Jennifer to feel reassured. He kissed her cheek.

A little while later, Hayden came home, supported by Werner, and took his seat at the head of the table. He put on his reading glasses and carefully studied Donaldโ€™s marriage certificate. โ€œGood. Now letโ€™s get started on planning the wedding.โ€

Donald carefully tucked the certificate into his pocket. โ€œI will, Grandpa,โ€ he promised.

Hayden nodded and turned to Werner. โ€œWhereโ€™s Jonathan?โ€

โ€œDad, I already called Jonathan and Irene. Theyโ€™re on their way back,โ€ Werner replied.

Hayden thumped his cane on the floor. โ€œThat kidโ€”always making us wait for him.โ€

No sooner had he finished speaking than Ireneโ€™s voice rang out, โ€œDad, weโ€™re back.โ€

Irene entered with a woman by her side, her arms loaded with gift bagsโ€”big and small, gifts for everyone.

Donald stood up. โ€œAunt Irene, who is this?โ€

โ€œThis is Jonathanโ€™s girlfriend,โ€ Irene said.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Everyoneโ€™s faces showed varied reactions as they sized up the woman. She looked rather sly, with a crafty hint in her ear.

When Jonathan returned, Hayden questioned, โ€œTell me, is this woman really your girlfriend?โ€

Jonathan looked down and quietly replied, โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œRidiculous! You must be trying to fool me.โ€ Hayden jabbed a finger at Jonathan. โ€œWhere did you find her? Did you pay her to come here and put on a show for me?โ€

โ€œSir,โ€ the woman beside him piped up sweetly, โ€œIโ€™m Wilnie. I really am Jonathanโ€™s girlfriend.โ€

Winnie tried to get Hayden some coffee, but he brushed her hand away. โ€œNo need.โ€

Pointing at Jonathan, Hayden said, โ€œIs this really your taste now? Sheโ€™s nowhere near as pretty as Teresa.โ€

Winnieโ€™s face instantly fell.

Irene tried to smooth things over. โ€œCome on, whatโ€™s the point of this? Jonathanโ€™s been divorced for agesโ€”canโ€™t he just start over?โ€

Hayden shot Irene a glare and then glared at Jonathan again. โ€œLet me say this one more time: I only accept Teresa as my granddaughter-in-lawโ€”unless the next one you bring home actually pleases me. Iโ€™m not in the mood for dinner now. This is way too annoying.โ€

Seeing Hayden leave with his cane, Werner and Cathy hurried after him, while Irene took a deep breath and followed to explain.

Jennifer stood up and looked at Jonathan. โ€œI think this girlโ€™s pretty nice. On behalf of Teresa, Iโ€™ll just sayโ€”wishing you two all the best.โ€

โ€œJennifer,โ€ Donald frowned and tugged her hand, signaling her to stop.

Jennifer grinned. She hadnโ€™t felt this happy in ages. โ€œWhat, did I say something wrong? Isnโ€™t today a double celebration? We got our marriage certificate, and Jonathan found himself a girlfriend. Thatโ€™s great news, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Jonathan didnโ€™t respond. Instead, he patted Donald on the shoulder and gave him a gift. โ€œIโ€™ve got things to take care of, so Iโ€™ll head out first.โ€

โ€œOh, I really appreciate it,โ€ Donald said.

โ€œWish you two happy,โ€ Jonathan said, glancing at the marriage certificate on the table. He masked his sorrow and walked away.

As soon as Jonathan left, Winnie hurried after him.

Cheryl pulled out her phone and started snapping photos of Winnie, shaking her head. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m with Grandpaโ€”sheโ€™s nowhere near as pretty as Teresa.โ€

โ€œAs long as Jonathan likes her,โ€ Jennifer said with a meaningful look. โ€œMaybe this is just his type. Everyoneโ€™s got their own path now. You should find yours, too.โ€ She tugged at Donaldโ€™s sleeve and led him away.

Cheryl was left speechless. She shouted at Jenniferโ€™s back, โ€œI wasnโ€™t even talking to you! Why do you always have to butt in?โ€

With a whole table of food left untouched, Cheryl decided not to let it go to waste and dug in all by herself.

Winnie hurried after Jonathan. He glanced at her and asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œYou still donโ€™t trust me, do you? I already told Mrs. Lynnโ€”I donโ€™t care that youโ€™ve been divorced. Everyone has a past. I like you for who you are,โ€ she said earnestly.

โ€œOh? Really?โ€ Jonathan replied, his face unreadable, his eyes dark and deep like ink.

Winnie didnโ€™t dare hesitate, afraid heโ€™d see through her. She nodded immediately. โ€œOf course, I mean it.โ€

โ€œMy mom will take you home later. You donโ€™t need to follow me anymore,โ€ Jonathan said, then got into his car.

As the car pulled away, he leaned back in his seat, Ireneโ€™s words echoing in his mind: โ€œIโ€™ve found you a great match; sheโ€™s the perfect wife and mother type. Sheโ€™ll be amazing. Son, just trust me this once. I know what Iโ€™m talking about. Sheโ€™s way more genuine than Teresa ever was. Let Teresa see what a gentle, caring wife youโ€™ve found.โ€

Snapping back to reality, he tapped his fingers lightly on his knee, lost in thought.
