Chapter 441

Cheryl grabbed Bennyโ€™s arm. โ€œWhy do you have to see Teresa? Arenโ€™t you Jonathanโ€™s friend? Are you trying to steal his girl?โ€

โ€œIf you think so. Whatever,โ€ Benny said, not bothering to explain. He still wanted to check out Teresaโ€™s place.

Right then, Cheryl wrapped her arms around Bennyโ€™s neck and started to whine, โ€œYou canโ€™t go. I canโ€™t let you mess up Jonathan and Teresaโ€™s relationship. You canโ€™t go after your friendโ€™s woman!โ€

Benny sucked in a breath and turned to look at Cheryl, who was clinging to him. โ€œThen tell me, is there a baby at Teresaโ€™s place? I heard a baby crying just now.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Cheryl blinked. โ€œOh, you mean the crying? Thatโ€™s just this.โ€ She pressed the cactus toy again, and it let out another wailing sound.

โ€œYou really think Iโ€™m that easy to fool? Fine, itโ€™s the toyโ€™s sound. But why were you at Teresaโ€™s place so early? And why did she send you down to meet me? You two are definitely up to something.โ€

โ€œBenny, youโ€™re overthinking it. I borrowed some money from Teresa before, and I just came to pay her back. Oh, I need to go home, but I canโ€™t drive. Can you give me a ride?โ€

Benny still looked suspicious.

Cheryl bit her lip. โ€œYou seriously think Teresa had a baby? Thatโ€™s ridiculous. Women are pregnant for ten monthsโ€”did you ever see Teresa with a big belly?โ€

That made Benny frown. If Teresa really had a kid, by the timeline, she would have given birth when she was with Nareigh. But that seemed impossible.

Seeing Benny start to waver, Cheryl quickly added, โ€œI swear, youโ€™re totally wrong about this.โ€

Benny didnโ€™t move and just glanced up at Teresaโ€™s room.

Suddenly, Benny felt his cheek heat up. He froze and then turned to see Cheryl, face bright red, giving him a quick kiss.

She said, โ€œCome on, just drive me home, okay? Stop trying to hit on Teresa. There are plenty of good women out thereโ€”donโ€™t go after your friendโ€™s woman.โ€

Benny didnโ€™t say a word. The next second, he suddenly leaned over, lowered Cherylโ€™s seat, and pinned her underneath him.

With his face so close, Cherylโ€™s heart started pounding. โ€œW-what are you doing?โ€

With a click, Benny buckled her seatbelt and stared at her. โ€œMen in their thirties are dangerous, you know. Donโ€™t pull this again, or next time I wonโ€™t go easy just because of Jonathan.โ€

Cheryl was startled and nodded blankly.

Only then did Benny sit up straight, start the car, and make a U-turn. โ€œHey, why do you smell like milk?โ€

โ€œIโ€”โ€ Cheryl clutched at her shirt. โ€œI just really like drinking milk, okay?โ€

Benny shot her a look and thought, โ€˜She really canโ€™t handle a little flirting.โ€™

He joked, โ€œI have a cousin whoโ€™s into girls like you. Want me to set you up?โ€

Cheryl shook her head. โ€œNo, thanks. Iโ€™m just not feeling guys right now.โ€

Benny grinned. โ€œSo, thereโ€™s already someone, huh?โ€

Cherylโ€™s mind was full of Nareigh. She nodded quickly. โ€œSomething like that.โ€

Benny didnโ€™t press further.

When they got to the Lynn residence, Cheryl said goodbye and invited Benny in, but he declined.

Cheryl came home, ready to face the music. Cathy looked at her, clearly exasperated. โ€œDonald got engaged, and you didnโ€™t even bother to come back. You missed so many family dinners. Are you just never coming home again?โ€

โ€œSorry, Mom, Dad,โ€ Cheryl said softly, her gaze dropping to the floor as she fidgeted with her fingers. โ€œI know I messed up. But Iโ€™m here now.โ€

Werner sighed and stepped in, โ€œCome on, letโ€™s not be too hard on her. Look at herโ€”she looks like sheโ€™s been through a lot.โ€

Cathy snorted. โ€œThrough a lot? She looks like sheโ€™s put on a few pounds.โ€

Cheryl quickly changed the subject, hoping to deflect any further scrutiny. โ€œHey, whereโ€™s Donald? I havenโ€™t seen him in ages.โ€

โ€œHe and Jennifer went to get their marriage certificate,โ€ Cathy replied.

โ€œWait, what?โ€

While her family was distracted, Cheryl slipped away to the corner and pulled out her phone. She quickly texted Teresa, letting her know that the Benny situation was sorted out and that Donald and Jennifer had just gone to get married. She added: [Mom said they were supposed to get their certificate on July 7th, but Jennifer wanted to do it earlier. Todayโ€™s the 26th, a Fridayโ€”if they didnโ€™t do it today, theyโ€™d have to wait until next Monday.]

Teresa didnโ€™t respond but thought, โ€˜Michael has just had his birthday yesterday, and now Jenniferโ€™s getting married? Did she really go through with it? Well, whatever. I donโ€™t even feel like asking.โ€™

An hour after Cheryl finished talking, Teresa scrolled through her Facebook feed and saw Donaldโ€™s post: [Letโ€™s make this official]. The post showed their marriage certificates and a photo of Donald and Jennifer holding hands, with the location tagged as Nareighโ€™s city hall. Teresa had been there twice beforeโ€”she knew it well. She just hadnโ€™t expected Donald and Jennifer to show up there so suddenly.

Teresa opened the window. The sky outside was a bit gray, but there was no thunder or rain. She closed the window again.

After Donald announced their marriage on Facebook, Cathy, Evelyn, and some colleagues from the company all liked it. Jennifer could also see these names.

Donald handed his phone to Jennifer and said, โ€œTeresa hasnโ€™t liked it.โ€

Jennifer replied, โ€œMaybe she just hasnโ€™t seen it yet.โ€

Donald nodded. โ€œI didnโ€™t set any privacy groupsโ€”itโ€™s public. Teresa hasnโ€™t blocked me, so she can definitely see it. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

As he spoke, he squeezed Jenniferโ€™s hand and kissed the back of it. โ€œJennifer, youโ€™re finally my wife. No one can ever come between us again. Iโ€™m just so happy today.โ€

Jennifer let Donald hold her hand. She lowered her head and glanced at her belly, where their baby was just starting to grow. โ€œDonald, Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat is it? Go ahead,โ€ he prompted.

Just then, his phone rang. Donald gestured for Jennifer to wait a momentโ€”it was Cathy calling to ask if theyโ€™d gotten their marriage certificate and when they were coming home for dinner.

โ€œMom, Jennifer and I are already on our way back,โ€ he replied.

โ€œYour sister and grandpa are back too. Weโ€™re all having dinner together tonight to celebrate,โ€ Cathy said.

โ€œSounds great,โ€ Donald said, hanging up.

He turned to Jennifer, puzzled. โ€œWhat were you about to tell me just now?โ€

Jennifer had overheard the conversation. She shook her head and quickly asked, โ€œCherylโ€™s back? Did she bring someone home?โ€

Donald chuckled, โ€œWho else would she come home with? If she ever started dating, sheโ€™d be the first to tell me.โ€
