Chapter 441
Cheryl grabbed Bennyโs arm. โWhy do you have to see Teresa? Arenโt you Jonathanโs friend? Are you trying to steal his girl?โ
โIf you think so. Whatever,โ Benny said, not bothering to explain. He still wanted to check out Teresaโs place.
Right then, Cheryl wrapped her arms around Bennyโs neck and started to whine, โYou canโt go. I canโt let you mess up Jonathan and Teresaโs relationship. You canโt go after your friendโs woman!โ
Benny sucked in a breath and turned to look at Cheryl, who was clinging to him. โThen tell me, is there a baby at Teresaโs place? I heard a baby crying just now.โ
โHuh?โ Cheryl blinked. โOh, you mean the crying? Thatโs just this.โ She pressed the cactus toy again, and it let out another wailing sound.
โYou really think Iโm that easy to fool? Fine, itโs the toyโs sound. But why were you at Teresaโs place so early? And why did she send you down to meet me? You two are definitely up to something.โ
โBenny, youโre overthinking it. I borrowed some money from Teresa before, and I just came to pay her back. Oh, I need to go home, but I canโt drive. Can you give me a ride?โ
Benny still looked suspicious.
Cheryl bit her lip. โYou seriously think Teresa had a baby? Thatโs ridiculous. Women are pregnant for ten monthsโdid you ever see Teresa with a big belly?โ
That made Benny frown. If Teresa really had a kid, by the timeline, she would have given birth when she was with Nareigh. But that seemed impossible.
Seeing Benny start to waver, Cheryl quickly added, โI swear, youโre totally wrong about this.โ
Benny didnโt move and just glanced up at Teresaโs room.
Suddenly, Benny felt his cheek heat up. He froze and then turned to see Cheryl, face bright red, giving him a quick kiss.
She said, โCome on, just drive me home, okay? Stop trying to hit on Teresa. There are plenty of good women out thereโdonโt go after your friendโs woman.โ
Benny didnโt say a word. The next second, he suddenly leaned over, lowered Cherylโs seat, and pinned her underneath him.
With his face so close, Cherylโs heart started pounding. โW-what are you doing?โ
With a click, Benny buckled her seatbelt and stared at her. โMen in their thirties are dangerous, you know. Donโt pull this again, or next time I wonโt go easy just because of Jonathan.โ
Cheryl was startled and nodded blankly.
Only then did Benny sit up straight, start the car, and make a U-turn. โHey, why do you smell like milk?โ
โIโโ Cheryl clutched at her shirt. โI just really like drinking milk, okay?โ
Benny shot her a look and thought, โShe really canโt handle a little flirting.โ
He joked, โI have a cousin whoโs into girls like you. Want me to set you up?โ
Cheryl shook her head. โNo, thanks. Iโm just not feeling guys right now.โ
Benny grinned. โSo, thereโs already someone, huh?โ
Cherylโs mind was full of Nareigh. She nodded quickly. โSomething like that.โ
Benny didnโt press further.
When they got to the Lynn residence, Cheryl said goodbye and invited Benny in, but he declined.
Cheryl came home, ready to face the music. Cathy looked at her, clearly exasperated. โDonald got engaged, and you didnโt even bother to come back. You missed so many family dinners. Are you just never coming home again?โ
โSorry, Mom, Dad,โ Cheryl said softly, her gaze dropping to the floor as she fidgeted with her fingers. โI know I messed up. But Iโm here now.โ
Werner sighed and stepped in, โCome on, letโs not be too hard on her. Look at herโshe looks like sheโs been through a lot.โ
Cathy snorted. โThrough a lot? She looks like sheโs put on a few pounds.โ
Cheryl quickly changed the subject, hoping to deflect any further scrutiny. โHey, whereโs Donald? I havenโt seen him in ages.โ
โHe and Jennifer went to get their marriage certificate,โ Cathy replied.
โWait, what?โ
While her family was distracted, Cheryl slipped away to the corner and pulled out her phone. She quickly texted Teresa, letting her know that the Benny situation was sorted out and that Donald and Jennifer had just gone to get married. She added: [Mom said they were supposed to get their certificate on July 7th, but Jennifer wanted to do it earlier. Todayโs the 26th, a Fridayโif they didnโt do it today, theyโd have to wait until next Monday.]
Teresa didnโt respond but thought, โMichael has just had his birthday yesterday, and now Jenniferโs getting married? Did she really go through with it? Well, whatever. I donโt even feel like asking.โ
An hour after Cheryl finished talking, Teresa scrolled through her Facebook feed and saw Donaldโs post: [Letโs make this official]. The post showed their marriage certificates and a photo of Donald and Jennifer holding hands, with the location tagged as Nareighโs city hall. Teresa had been there twice beforeโshe knew it well. She just hadnโt expected Donald and Jennifer to show up there so suddenly.
Teresa opened the window. The sky outside was a bit gray, but there was no thunder or rain. She closed the window again.
After Donald announced their marriage on Facebook, Cathy, Evelyn, and some colleagues from the company all liked it. Jennifer could also see these names.
Donald handed his phone to Jennifer and said, โTeresa hasnโt liked it.โ
Jennifer replied, โMaybe she just hasnโt seen it yet.โ
Donald nodded. โI didnโt set any privacy groupsโitโs public. Teresa hasnโt blocked me, so she can definitely see it. Donโt worry.โ
As he spoke, he squeezed Jenniferโs hand and kissed the back of it. โJennifer, youโre finally my wife. No one can ever come between us again. Iโm just so happy today.โ
Jennifer let Donald hold her hand. She lowered her head and glanced at her belly, where their baby was just starting to grow. โDonald, Iโฆโ
โWhat is it? Go ahead,โ he prompted.
Just then, his phone rang. Donald gestured for Jennifer to wait a momentโit was Cathy calling to ask if theyโd gotten their marriage certificate and when they were coming home for dinner.
โMom, Jennifer and I are already on our way back,โ he replied.
โYour sister and grandpa are back too. Weโre all having dinner together tonight to celebrate,โ Cathy said.
โSounds great,โ Donald said, hanging up.
He turned to Jennifer, puzzled. โWhat were you about to tell me just now?โ
Jennifer had overheard the conversation. She shook her head and quickly asked, โCherylโs back? Did she bring someone home?โ
Donald chuckled, โWho else would she come home with? If she ever started dating, sheโd be the first to tell me.โ
