Chapter 419
โHow am I supposed to know what Sanford meant? I told you, heโs nuts,โ Teresa said.
โStill not going to tell the truth, huh?โ Jonathan pressed.
โIโฆโ Teresa closed her eyes. She knew that if she didnโt explain now, Jonathan would definitely start digging, and heโd end up finding out about Michael.
After weighing her options, Teresa finally gave in. โAlright, I guess I have to clear this up, or my reputationโs toast. Sanford was talking about my momโs youngest daughter, Isabel. My momโs been busy lately, so she left the kid with me. Thatโs why Sanford thought Isabel was my daughter.โ
Jonathan felt like something was still amiss. โWhy does everyone ask you to babysit? First your coworkerโs son, and now your momโs kid. Doesnโt your mom know you can barely take care of yourself?โ
โSo youโre saying my mom shouldโve asked my sister, whoโs a gynecologist, for help?โ Teresa asked.
Jonathan did think so. After all, Evelyn didnโt just have Teresa as a daughter.
Teresa explained, โMy sister and my mom have never gotten along. My momโs too scared to ask her for help. Even at my sisterโs engagement party, my mom barely spoke to her. Thatโs why she could only come to me.โ
Jonathanโs thin lips pressed into a straight line.
Teresa continued, โIf you donโt believe me, Iโll call Isabel and Sanford over right now. We can clear this up face-to-face. I donโt want to get dragged into your messโI havenโt done anything to either of you.โ
Jonathan frowned. โI donโt even know Sanford. I have no idea why he came at me today.โ
Just then, Teresaโs phone rang. Speak of the devilโSanford was calling. She hung up, but he called again.
Teresa was about to decline the call again, but Jonathan spoke up beside her. โAnswer it. If you donโt, itโll look like youโre hiding something.โ
Teresa frowned and answered.
โWhere are you right now?โ Sanfordโs voice came through the phone.
Teresa cleared her throat. โJust say what you need to say.โ
โLook, I already called your sister. I shouldnโt have let it slip about Isabel today. Iโm so sorry. Now your ex is going to get suspicious,โ Sanford said.
Teresa cursed Sanford in her head, โCan you just shut up already?โ
Sanford kept rambling, โI really didnโt want to hurt you, or the kidโโ
โThatโs enough,โ Teresa cut him off and lowered her voice. โJonathan is right here.โ
Sanford went silent.
Teresa said, โItโs all a misunderstanding. Isabel isnโt my daughter at all. Iโll send you the addressโcome over now. Thatโs it.โ She hung up.
Jonathanโs face was unreadable. โSending him the address? Why not just go straight to the hospital? I want to see this so-called daughter of mine and do a DNA test with her.โ
Teresa ignored him and quickly texted Jennifer, filling her in on what was happening.
Jennifer headed to Rosary Estates and picked up Isabel, then drove her to the cafรฉ near the hospital. Sanford followed shortly after.
Teresa explained, โIsabelโs not my daughterโsheโs my momโs child.โ
Sanford scoffed, โYour momโs kid? Come on, how old is your mom? No way she could still have a baby.โ
โPlenty of celebrities have kids in their fifties. If my mom wanted to, why couldnโt she?โ Teresa shot back.
Sanford still didnโt believe it. He turned to Jennifer and asked, โIs that true?โ
Jennifer hummed in response, her eyes carrying a hint of disappointment.
Sanford licked his lips, stubborn. โNo way. I even did a DNA test.โ
Jonathan finally spoke up. โWhereโs the DNA test report? Mind if I take a look?โ
Sanford didnโt have it on him.
Teresa said, โThereโs a DNA testing center right next door. Letโs just do another test.โ
Sanford and Jonathan both agreed, and they handed over samples for testing.
Sanford then called the friend whoโd helped with the last DNA test. The friend said, โDidnโt you just ask me to check if they were related and send you the result? They are related.โ
Sanfordโs heart dropped, and he realized heโd messed up. Still not willing to give up, he asked Isabel, โIs Teresa your mom or your sister?โ
Isabel was startled and burst into tears.
Sanford fell silentโhe didnโt want to lose face, especially in front of Jonathan.
Still scared, Isabel looked at Jonathan through her tears and cried, โHeโs so handsome. I want a hug from him.โ
Jennifer quickly scooped Isabel up and said to Jonathan, โItโs just a misunderstanding. Since thereโs nothing else, youโTeresaโs exโshould leave. The rest is our familyโs business.โ
Jonathan didnโt budge. โTeresa might be pregnant with my child. Iโm taking her for a checkup.โ
Jennifer shot Teresa a sharp look, as if asking, โDid you tell Jonathan? Whatโs wrong with you?โ
โIโm not pregnant!โ Teresa shouted at Jennifer irritably.
Jennifer took a moment to compose herself, then turned to Jonathan. โWhy do you think Teresa might be pregnant with your child?โ
Jonathan replied, โLast week in Strico, weโโ
โIโm not pregnant,โ Teresa cut him off.
Jonathan stopped and glanced at Teresa, who looked stubborn as ever.
Jennifer pretty much got the picture. She let out a sharp laugh and turned to Jonathan. โI know Teresa. Sheโd never get pregnant with you. If youโre worried, Iโll do a checkup myself and send you the results.โ
Jonathan went silent.
Jennifer gave a slight smile. โIโm a gynecologist. If Teresa is pregnant, Iโll tell you right away and make sure you take responsibility. After all, itโs a life weโre talking about.โ
She added, โAnd now that Iโm Donaldโs fiancรฉe, that basically makes you my half-cousin. Weโre all family here.โ
Jonathan, out of respect for Donald, didnโt say another word. He turned and walked away.
Once Jonathan left, Jenniferโs expression turned serious as she looked at Teresa. But she addressed Sanford first. โYou really let me down. You promised to keep the child a secret. Now, you broke my trust.โ
โJennifer, I know I was too impulsive. I misunderstoodโI thought he was just some jerk who abandoned his wife and kid. I was so angry. I did it to protect Teresa,โ Sanford said. Honestly, seeing Jonathan up close reminded him of his own childhood without a father, and his motherโs pain. He just couldnโt hold back from confronting Jonathan, almost hoping to see Jonathan get upset, as if that would make him feel better.
After a while, Sanford snapped back to reality. โAnyway, it really was my fault this time. It wonโt happen again.โ
Jennifer sighed. โYou should go. I want to talk to Teresa alone.โ
