Chapter 418
Chase hurried out after finishing his speech. Teresa looked at Sanford, who was already sitting with a faint smile on his lips, and frowned. โHorizonlead Group? Why didnโt you tell me Jonathan would be here?โ
Sanford took a sip of coffee and grabbed her wrist. โI just found out myself. Come on, sit down.โ
Teresa pressed him. โWhat are you up to? You knew he was my ex-husband. Do you have any idea how awkward this is for me?โ
Sanford spread his hands helplessly. โHey, my friend set this up. Itโs not like I can just kick people out, right?โ But now, it was too late for Teresa to leaveโJonathan was approaching.
Teresa glanced down at her phone and realized Jonathan had actually messaged her half an hour ago: [Iโm heading back to Nareigh today], along with his flight information. But at that time, she was in Sanfordโs car and never saw it. She looked up and saw Jonathan, wearing a black jacket, standing just a few steps away. Teresa could see a flicker of confusion in Jonathanโs eyes. She pressed her lips together, thinking her best bet was to get out of there as soon as possible. But Sanford caught her arm again, refusing to let her go. โWe havenโt even eaten yet. You promised youโd stay and finish dinner with me.โ
Jonathan stared at Sanfordโs hand, a storm brewing in his eyes.
โMr. Lynn, please, have a seat,โ Chase said quickly. โLet me introduce youโthis is my friend. His mother was once the heiress of the legendary Onlyora Group in Nareigh.โ
About 30 years ago, Onlyora Group was a fashion powerhouse, with stores all over the country. But for some reason, it faded from the spotlight in recent years. People only heard that the lady boss of Onlyora had retired to Shaville to enjoy her later years.
Sanford straightened his clothes and stood up, formally introducing himself for the first time in front of Jonathan. โIโm Sanford Thomas, my mom Lioraโs son.โ Teresa couldnโt help but find his introduction a little funnyโit was the first time sheโd heard anyone introduce themselves like that.
โJonathan Lynn,โ Jonathan said, walking over and looking toward Teresa. โWhat are you doing here?โ
Before Teresa could answer, Chase asked, puzzled, โMr. Lynn, do you know this lady?โ
Jonathan fixed his gaze on Teresa, a faint smile tugging at his lips. โSheโs my ex-wife.โ
Chase was stunned, stammering, โIโIโve been overseas for years. I really didnโt know this was yourโฆโ He shot Sanford a look, demanding to know what was going on.
Sanford pulled Teresa into his arms protectively. โTeresaโs my girlfriend now.โ As he spoke, he pulled up his phone and showed Jonathan the record of Teresa sending him money. โDid she ever send you money like this? Oh, youโre loadedโno way you need a woman to send you cash, right?โ
Teresa felt like she had to explain herself right then. But Jonathan spoke first, his tone cool and calm. โI need to take her to the hospital for a checkup. Thereโs a good chance sheโs pregnantโwith my child.โ
Chase and the others, whoโd been too scared to speak, all sucked in a sharp breath.
Just as Teresa was about to stand up, Sanford suddenly slammed his hand on the table and said, โNo way Teresa would have a baby with him! She already gave me a daughter.โ The bystanders gasped, looking quite stunned. Jonathanโs gaze was sharp and probing, locked right on Teresa.
Teresa couldnโt hold back anymore. She impatiently shook off Sanfordโs arm. โAre you insane? Since when did I have your kid?โ
Sanford finally let out a breath and tried to comfort Teresa. โIโm just pissed off. Scum like himโabandoning his wife and kid, never taking responsibility.โ Then he turned to Jonathan. โFrom now on, your wife and your kid are mine. Feeling angry now, huh? Thatโs what you Lynns deserve.โ
Jonathan waited for Sanford to finish, then asked Teresa. โHow come I never knew I had a daughter? You had a daughter with me?โ
โHeโs just making stuff up,โ Teresa said before turning to Sanford. โAre you out of your mind? What nonsense are you spouting?โ
Sanford looked at Teresa. โIโm just standing up for you. You said youโd marry me, and Iโll treat your kid like my own.โ
โCan you just shut up? What kid? When did I say Iโd marry you?โ Teresa snapped.
โYou said youโd think about it. You even sent me money,โ Sanford insisted.
โI never said that.โ Teresa glared at him.
Jonathanโs face darkened as the two chatted โintimately.โ He said to Chase, โIโve got things to do. Iโm not sticking around for this meal,โ and turned to leave.
Chase hurried after him. โMr. Lynn, please let me explain. My friend was out of lineโโ But in the end, Chase could only come back looking defeated and said to Sanford, โJonathan looked really pissed.โ
Teresa glared at Sanford. โSo this was your plan? You wanted to use me just to get under Jonathanโs skin? Unbelievable. You can just go back to Shaville since youโre not from here, but I actually have to live in Nareigh.โ With that, she stormed off.
Sanford took a deep breath, sipped his coffee, and tried to steady himself. Chase looked at him and asked, โWhatโs up? Why did things get so heated between you and Jonathan? Whatโs this whole pregnancy and kid story?โ
Sanford waved it off. โJust forget what I said. I was just talking nonsense.โ
โNonsense? Sanford, I thought we were friends, but you must be out of your mind. Thatโs the chairman of Horizonlead Group! Do you know how hard it was for me to get him here? How are you going to make this up to me?โ Chase snapped. โWhatever you want for compensation, Iโll pay. Iโll just leave it at that. Iโm heading outโIโm really not in the mood today.โ Sanford grabbed his coat and left.
Jonathan was just about to leave the parking lot when Teresa came running after him. The hard lines of his face softened slightlyโhe clearly had expected her to chase him down. He popped open the passenger door. โGet in.โ
Teresa got in and quickly explained, โIโm innocent. I barely know Sanford, and I had no idea heโd say all that tonight. Donโt think Iโd ever get mixed up with someone like him.โ
โOkay, Iโve got two questions,โ Jonathan said. โFirst, why did you transfer money to Sanford?โ
Teresa paused. โThatโs between me and him. I donโt have to tell you.โ
A private matter, huh? Jonathanโs face darkened. โNow, my second question: he claims he abandoned my wife and daughter. Did you have my childโฆ my daughter?โ
Teresa replied flatly, โHow could I possibly have your child?โ
โOh really? Look me in the eye and say that,โ Jonathan challenged.
Teresa stared straight into his eyes and said honestly, โHow could I have your daughter?โ
Jonathan still looked doubtful. โThen what did he mean?โ
