Chapter 420
โAlright, Iโll reach out to Teresa once the DNA test results for Isabel and Teresa are in,โ Sanford said, then left.
Teresa turned to Jennifer. โSee? Good thing I never let him meet Michael. Do you think he could keep something like that under wraps?โ
Jennifer frowned. โSanford really let me down. He never used to be like this. I donโt know whatโs gotten into him this time.โ
โAnd you,โ she turned her frustration on Teresa, โwhatโs your deal? Youโve let me down, too.โ
Teresa fell silent.
โYou slept with Jonathan again when you went on that business trip?โ
โWhatโs it to you?โ
โHow is it not my business?โ Jennifer grabbed Teresaโs wrist. โIโm your big sister. Itโs my job to teach you about morals and decency.โ
Hearing Jennifer talk about โmorals and decency,โ Teresa found it laughable. โYour job transfer and promotion were all thanks to Jonathanโs connections. You promised me youโd leave Nareigh for Shaville, but you broke your word. And youโre perfectly fine spending the money Donaldโs parents gave him, letting him buy you a house. So tell me, how do you have the nerve to lecture me about morals and decency?โ
Jennifer snapped, โWhy are you dragging me into this? I just donโt want you to get mixed up with Jonathan again. Iโm doing this for your own goodโI donโt want you to make the same mistakes. Heโd already left Nareigh. But now, thanks to you running off on that business trip and getting tangled up with him again, heโs back. And now he even thinks youโre pregnant.โ
Teresa shot back, โIsnโt that what youโre here for? The all-powerful Dr. Nelson who can โfixโ any DNA test. With you around, what do I have to worry about? Go ahead and keep climbing that career ladder. Iโm sure your precious nephew will help you become director.โ
โYou!โ Jennifer was so mad at Teresaโs sharp tongue that she could barely speak. She tried to calm herself down. Right now, she cared more about the fate of the child in her womb. โWhen are you coming with me for the abortion? I canโt go alone, Teresa. I need you there.โ
โIโm not going with you. Itโs your babyโwhether you keep it or not, thatโs your call.โ Teresa turned to leave, her tone cold and final.
Jennifer froze for a second before blocking her path. โI care so much about your feelings. But why canโt you ever see things from my side? Do you really think Iโm that heartless? If I have this baby, Iโll lose everything. Iโll fall behind, all my years of hard work wasted. My classmates and junior colleagues will laugh at me for giving up my career to be a stay-at-home mom, turning into a housewife. My whole life plan will be ruined. I donโt want to be cruel to the baby, but I canโt stand the thought of anyone looking down on me. Iโm so torn up.โ
Teresa yanked her hand free. โFirst of all, no one ever told you to give up your career. You can have bothโcareer and family. Youโre the one overthinking it. Youโre not even thirty and already an associate professor. Jennifer, youโre already amazing, and your classmates envy your life. Who would look down on you?โ
โYouโre the first to look down on me,โ Jennifer said with a bitter smile. โWithout Jonathan pulling strings, Donald, you, and I would all be better. Itโs all because he helped. Otherwise, Iโd be in Shaville by now, and everything would beโโ
โEnough.โ Teresa couldnโt understand Jenniferโs logic. Jonathan helped her, and not only was she ungrateful, but she even blamed him for messing up her plans. After a pause, Teresa continued, โWhy donโt you blame Donald for the car accident that ruined your plans? Why is it Jonathanโs fault?โ
Jennifer took a deep breath. โWeโre sisters. Now youโre taking Jonathanโs side and blaming me?โ
โYouโre the problem here. You always blame everyone else. Youโre so self-righteous. Seriously, you need therapy.โ With that, Teresa walked away for good.
Jenniferโs eyes flushed red, and she clenched her fingers so tightly that her fingertips started to ache.
After a while, Jennifer thought it over and texted Teresa: [Teresa, Iโm just really stressed out. I was a bit on edge earlier and said some things I shouldnโt have. I hope you can understand.]
Teresa didnโt respond.
Sanford had already gotten the DNA test report for Isabel and Teresa. The last page said the results supported that they were related, but there wasnโt enough evidence to prove they were actually mother and daughter. Sanford got the two copies of the report and called Teresa. โThe results are outโIsabel really is your sister. Alright, I was wrong. You guys didnโt even tell me her last name is Davis.โ
โShe used to have her dadโs last name, Wilson. After my mom divorced her second husband, she changed it to her own. You took your momโs last name, too, so whatโs so strange about it?โ Teresa replied.
Sanford paused, then said with a loaded tone, โDonโt you want to know my dadโs last name?โ
โI donโt care about your personal life. Now that everythingโs out in the open, just donโt bother me again, alright? Iโll pay you back within a month,โ Teresa said and hung up.
Sanford sent her a copy of the report. Teresa immediately forwarded it to Jonathan, figuring he wouldnโt keep digging into the kid anymore.
After finally wrapping everything up, Teresa headed home, with Isabel tagging along. Isabel insisted she wanted Evelyn, and Teresa felt a massive headache coming on. After a long struggle, she finally managed to coax Isabel to sleep.
Michael woke up. โMom, did you get in touch with Dad yet? My birthdayโs coming upโwill he come see me?โ he asked.
Teresaโs long lashes fluttered. โIโm still trying to reach him.โ
Michael let out a little huff and stared up at her. โMom, look me in the eyes and tell meโdid Dad really leave us?โ
โOf course not,โ Teresa said, meeting his gaze. โItโs just that your dad and I havenโt talked in a long time.โ
Michael thought for a second and said, โMom, if you canโt find my dad, I wonโt make things hard for you. Just call Mr. Lime instead, okay? I havenโt seen him in forever.โ
Just then, Evelyn calledโTeresa had actually been about to call her. โHello, Ms. Davis? You need to come back and pick up Isabel. I canโt take care of her anymore. Iโve got so much going on every day, and I just donโt have the money, time, or energy to look after your daughter.โ
Evelyn sighed, her voice low, โIโll be back tomorrow, and I have something important I need to talk to you about.โ
