Chapter 417

After a couple of seconds, Teresa said, โ€œJenniferโ€™s watching Isabel today, so sheโ€™s not home. I can go to dinner with you, but you have to make it clear to your friends that Iโ€™m not your girlfriend.โ€

โ€œDeal,โ€ Sanford agreed, a glint flashing in his eyes as he glanced at his watch. โ€œSo, are we going over now, or do you want to go get changed first?โ€

Teresa said, โ€œIโ€™ll go freshen up. Wait for me in the carโ€”no need to come upstairs.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Sanford finally stopped following her.

After Teresa got home, she realized she couldnโ€™t call Miriam tonightโ€”Edward was drunk, and Miriam was busy taking care of him. Teresa turned to Michael and said, โ€œHoney, I need to step out for a bit, but Iโ€™ll be back soon. If youโ€™re scared to be home alone, Iโ€™ll ask Aunt Jennifer to come watch you and Isabel.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Michael and Isabel shook their heads almost in unison. Michael patted his chest. โ€œMom, I can take care of Aunt Isabel. Just come back soon, and watch out for bad guys.โ€

Isabel bounced on the couch. โ€œNo, I donโ€™t want her! Sheโ€™s so mean, and sheโ€™s always yelling at you. Donโ€™t ask her to come.โ€

But honestly, besides Jennifer and Miriam, Teresa didnโ€™t have anyone else she could count on to watch the kids. Sherry hadnโ€™t come back. The last time Teresa had spoken to her, Sherry had mentioned that Christianโ€™s mother was battling late-stage cancer and didnโ€™t have much time left. Teresa couldnโ€™t possibly bother her during such a difficult time.

As Sanford was getting impatient waiting at the door, Teresa finally headed downstairs and got into the car. Sanford glanced over at her in the passenger seatโ€”her hair loosely tied back, a light beige V-neck top showing off her fair collarbones.

โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you wearing the dress you wore at Jenniferโ€™s engagement? It looked amazing on you,โ€ Sanford said.

โ€œItโ€™s not a celebration tonight. Why would I wear it?โ€ Teresa replied.

Sanford mustered his courage, reached out, and grabbed her hand. โ€œAre you really not going to give us a shot?โ€

With a sharp smack, Teresa slapped his hand away. โ€œTouch me again and Iโ€™ll call the copsโ€”and Iโ€™ll tell Jennifer youโ€™re harassing me.โ€

Sanford fell silent.

They pulled up to Harmony Garden in Nareigh, a swanky restaurant famous for its fancy, old-school cuisine. The place was a splurgeโ€”minimum spend was fifteen grandโ€”and it was the perfect spot for birthday or engagement parties. It was one of the oldest restaurants in the city. Teresa had only been here once or twiceโ€”definitely not a regular.

There were already a few guys waiting in the restaurant. A man with glasses greeted Sanford with a handshake and a friendly pat on the shoulder. โ€œYou finally made it here, bro.โ€

Sanford introduced Teresa, โ€œThis is my college buddyโ€™s little sister, Teresa.โ€

โ€œOh, so this is your girlfriend? You mentioned her on the phoneโ€”sheโ€™s even prettier in person,โ€ the man said.

Sanford didnโ€™t deny it.

Teresa rolled her eyesโ€”she knew better than to trust anything he said. She quickly explained, โ€œIโ€™m not his girlfriend, just a friend. He said he had a business friend and insisted on introducing me to a potential business partner.โ€

Sanford was caught off guard. Heโ€™d never said that, but by pure luck, the man in glasses was indeed in business. The man adjusted his glasses. โ€œNow that I look closer, you do seem familiar. Arenโ€™t you the boss of Teresouth Group?โ€

That was when Teresa realized this was Chase Shelton, son of the chairman of Chase Group, one of Nareighโ€™s oldest companies.

Just then, Chaseโ€™s phone rang. He quickly said, โ€œSanford, you two go ahead and sit. I need to head downstairs to pick someone up.โ€

Sanford narrowed his eyes. โ€œWhoโ€™s important enough that you, a general manager, have to greet them in person?โ€

Chase clicked his tongue. โ€œCome on, you know who it is. Didnโ€™t I tell you? Itโ€™s the boss of Horizonlead Group.โ€
